Exploring Workplace Spirituality In The Context Of Work Teams, Nandini O. Mcclurg May 2019

Exploring Workplace Spirituality In The Context Of Work Teams, Nandini O. Mcclurg

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The topic of spirituality has been widely explored by scholars, researchers, and organizations in an effort to understand human responses to life endeavors and to individuals’ relationships to society at large and to work environments more specifically (Giacalone & Jurkiewicz, 2010a, 2010b). Spirituality has been associated with a person’s desire to perform meaningful work and to feel connected with the community that is being served through this work (Chalofsky, 2003; Fagley & Adler, 2012). Since most adults spend a large amount of their productive hours at work pursuing meaning and purpose in their jobs (Madden, 2015), the concept of workplace …

Does Turnover Matter For The Performance Of Fixed Income Etfs?, Philip A. Geleta May 2019

Does Turnover Matter For The Performance Of Fixed Income Etfs?, Philip A. Geleta

Financial Analyst

This paper provides empirical evidence on the relation between portfolio turnover and fund performance in the exchange traded fund market using a sample of 70 actively managed fixed income funds from 2008-2017. Based on portfolio analysis, the results show that there is a significant positive relationship between turnover and Fama and French’s (1993) five factor alpha. Further panel regression analysis, however, shows no significant relationship between turnover and performance after controlling for various fund characteristics. Overall, the results show no robust effect of turnover on the performance of fixed income ETFs.

Hedge-Fund-Like Strategies For Retail Investors: Alternative Mutual Funds Vs. Alternative Etfs, Joseph De Santis May 2019

Hedge-Fund-Like Strategies For Retail Investors: Alternative Mutual Funds Vs. Alternative Etfs, Joseph De Santis

Financial Analyst

Hedge fund-like strategies in mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have grown in popularity in the recent decade. This paper examines the value alternative strategies add for retail investors by comparing the performance of alternative ETFs and alternative mutual funds. Using a set of 50 ETFs and 324 mutual funds that offer alternative strategies (such as long/short equity and market neutral from Morningstar Direct) from November 2009 – December 2017. This study finds that alternative mutual funds do not outperform alternative ETFs on a gross return or a net return basis. Several factors have a significant impact on the return …

Impact Of The Global Financial Crisis On Developing And Advanced Countries' Reserve Holdings, Nora Derian May 2019

Impact Of The Global Financial Crisis On Developing And Advanced Countries' Reserve Holdings, Nora Derian

Financial Analyst

The reserve holdings held by the central bank of a country, and more importantly, the changes in those holdings as a percentage of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, can indicate a lot about the financial health of an economy. In this paper, we examine the cross-sectional differences between emerging and advanced economies’ reserve holdings as well as their variations over time, around the global financial crisis of 2008. It is apparent that countries hold reserves for various reasons, primarily for insurance and to attract future investment, and that they are more crucial to emerging economies than developed.

The Relationship Between Manager Tenure And Corporate Bond Mutual Fund Performance, Matthew Mottes May 2019

The Relationship Between Manager Tenure And Corporate Bond Mutual Fund Performance, Matthew Mottes

Financial Analyst

This paper analyzes the relationship between manager tenure and performance in corporate bond mutual funds, using a sample from Morningstar of 665 funds from 2002-2017. Based on a univariate portfolio analysis and panel regressions, the results show a significant positive relationship between average manager tenure and corporate bond performance generally, regardless of whether performance is measured by raw monthly returns or Fama and French’s (1993) five-factor alpha. However, in the crisis periods, this paper documents a significant negative relationship between average manager tenure and fund performance.

Using Social Media Analytics: The Effect Of President Trump’S Tweets On Companies’ Stock Performance, Eric A. Fenn May 2019

Using Social Media Analytics: The Effect Of President Trump’S Tweets On Companies’ Stock Performance, Eric A. Fenn

Accounting

With the recent political development in the United States I was presented with a unique opportunity to examine social media’s influences on the stock market. Specifically, I analyzed the impact of tweets from President Trump’s official Twitter accounts from his election to the office to February 1st, 2019 that targeted a publicly traded company. I find that these tweets have a very minimal effect on companies’ stock prices, but there is a significant effect on the stocks’ trading volumes.

This study examines the stock return changes of Chinese ADR company likely be affected by Trump’s election on November 9, 2016, the signing of tariff Chinese goods bill on March 8, 2018, and the tariff bill takes into act on March 23, 2018. The results show that, relative to the entire market, the stock prices of Chinese ADR companies underperform. Our analysis provides evidence that it’s hard to find that these three events would affect a particular industry of Chinese ADR the most.

Leverage Adjustment And Credit Risk, Wei He May 2019

Leverage Adjustment And Credit Risk, Wei He

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation consists of three coherent chapters that discuss the capital structure target, speed of adjustment and effect of speed of adjustment on credit risk.

Ⅰ: We standardize leverage ratio by underlying business risk. The methodology of standardization follows the assumption that asset value follows a geometric Brownian motion. We find that by standardizing book leverage ratio, standardized leverage ratio can be explained by firm characteristics with a much larger coefficient of determination compared with book leverage ratio. The coefficient of determination difference of regression with standardized leverage ratio and book leverage ratio becomes even larger if we exclude zero …

Machine Learning And Empirical Asset Pricing, Yingnan Yi May 2019

Machine Learning And Empirical Asset Pricing, Yingnan Yi

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

In this paper, I conduct a comprehensive study of using machine learning tools to forecast the U.S. stock returns. I use three sets of predictors: the past history summarized by 120 lagged returns, the technical indicators measured by 120 moving average trading signals, and the 79 firm fundamentals, which helps to understand the weak-form market efficiency, algorithm trading and fundamental analysis. I find each set independently has strong predictive power, and buying the top 20% stocks with the greatest predicted returns and shorting bottom 20% with the lowest earns economically significant profits, and the profitability is robust to a number …

The Time-Dimension In Strategic Change And Firm Performance: The South Korean Context, Kilho Shin May 2019

The Time-Dimension In Strategic Change And Firm Performance: The South Korean Context, Kilho Shin

Management Dissertations - Archive

The management of time in an organization is a fundamental activity for the survival and growth of firms. In the field of strategy, time, albeit under-studied, has received increasing attention among scholars. However, in reviewing multiple conceptions of time in strategic change research, scholars have failed to develop consistent and sound theories and constructs of time. Thus, this study systematically organizes existing knowledge about time and develops a comprehensive theoretical framework that accurately describes the dynamic temporal patterns of strategic change. To explain, by mapping various patterns of strategic change into the time continuum, this study identifies five objective time-dimensions …

The Effect Of An Auditor Identity Disclosure Requirement On Audit Quality: An Experimental Examination Incorporating The Incremental Effect Of A Signature Requirement, Allen D. Blay, Eric S. Gooden, Mark J. Mellon, Douglas E. Stevens May 2019

The Effect Of An Auditor Identity Disclosure Requirement On Audit Quality: An Experimental Examination Incorporating The Incremental Effect Of A Signature Requirement, Allen D. Blay, Eric S. Gooden, Mark J. Mellon, Douglas E. Stevens

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

After considering a proposal to require the engagement partner’s signature on the audit report (PCAOB 2009), the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board chose instead to only require the disclosure of the engagement partner’s name (PCAOB 2015). This choice was made, however, with little supporting theory or empirical evidence. We make predictions regarding the behavioral effects of the two proposed requirements using insights from social norm activation theory, and test those predictions using an experimental audit market setting found in the literature. We find that both requirements reduce misreporting in the audit report compared to a control setting with neither requirement …

Creating Sustainable Brands: How The Green 4 Ps Influence Consumers' Attitudes Toward Brands, Julia Dipersio May 2019

Creating Sustainable Brands: How The Green 4 Ps Influence Consumers' Attitudes Toward Brands, Julia Dipersio

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

I study the important brand-building relationship between consumer characteristics and the green 4 Ps that has been neglected in the literature: how the green marketing mix can work simultaneously to influence a consumer’s attitude toward a green brand with the goal of understanding how a green brand image is created. This study considers Information Integration Theory and Social Judgment Theory to assess how attitudes can be formed through the green 4 Ps. I collected data through a Qualtrics online survey from 185 respondents. Subsequent regression analyses in SPSS revealed certain strong relationships between select consumer characteristics and a positive attitudinal …

The Rhetoric Of Blockchain Technology, Mira Kohli May 2019

The Rhetoric Of Blockchain Technology, Mira Kohli

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The purpose of this honor’s thesis is to consider the rhetoric about blockchain technology. It is recognizable that blockchain technology does not share a common definition, method, or general understanding; this absence or opacity influences its use in institutions and industries. To advance my thesis about the rhetoric of blockchain, I developed a framework to analyze and critique blockchain technology use. Then, I applied this framework to two articles that discuss the adaptation of blockchain in the financial industry. My findings were that advocates for the technology are influencing its intended use. The rhetoric surrounding the technology is why the …

Humanitarian Aid Logistics: Response Strategies In The 2015 Refugee Crisis, Molly O'Connell May 2019

Humanitarian Aid Logistics: Response Strategies In The 2015 Refugee Crisis, Molly O'Connell

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Humanitarian aid logistics is an emerging field that applies principles of supply chain management and logistics to the humanitarian relief sector. This thesis explores humanitarian aid logistics strategies in the context of the 2015 Refugee Crisis. An unprecedented number of refugees sought asylum in Europe beginning in 2015, where European officials and humanitarian organizations were largely unprepared to provide for them. The 2015 Refugee Crisis offers a unique perspective on humanitarian aid logistics because it requires both short-term and long-term response strategies. Through the framework of management science, a subfield of supply chain management, and logistics, this thesis creates a …

In the years following, cryptocurrencies alike experiences massive gains in profitability; however, after the bubble had burst organizations began to look at the technology from a more academic standpoint. It was quickly found out that there is a massive application for blockchain in almost all sectors of industry from bulk stores (Walmart) to banking (IBM). The Future Of The Renewable Fuel Standard, Jacob Urban May 2019

The Future Of The Renewable Fuel Standard, Jacob Urban

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Persistent uncertainty about the future of the Renewable Fuel Standard led to an analysis of the policy’s language and the varying degrees of political support for the program in the Senate. Applying probabilities to the various conceived scenarios resulted in a 40% change that the program continues in its current form in perpetuity. The report finds that a Democratic Congress would implement legislation that focuses on the policy’s missed environmental goals. Conversely, a Republican Congress would lead to the most uncertainty in the market due to competing views of the RFS within the program. With a narrow Republican majority, legislation …

Profile Imperfect: How Do Young Urban Millennials Perceive The Impact Of Tinder In Their Lives?, Hairol Ma

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

As Tinder, Bumble, and other swipe-based dating apps usher departure from detailed information-entering dating sites like OkCupid and Match.com, how do young urban millennials perceive the impact of Tinder in their lives? Fifteen individuals aged 18-25 were interviewed on their use of swipe dating apps. Additionally, two ethnographies were conducted. Results showed that by commodifying other users on the app as a list of features rather than a holistic individual, users subsequently ascribed the same judgements upon themselves. The resulting assets for an overarching campaign aims to urge users to practice view themselves (and subsequently others) beyond their Tinder profile …

Sensable: A Comprehensive Exploration Of Designing For Sensory Interaction To Create Dynamic & Inclusive User Experiences In The Context Of Sustainable Fashion, Emma Comtois

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Often, the default in interaction design is to focus on visual interactions, but this leaves a lot to be desired when people can’t interact with those experiences because of an impairment. This approach is further limited when there are singular experiences for all users. To combat this, I completed an exploration of how to design sensory interactions using a combination of motion, visual and voice design, partnered with artificial intelligence to create expansive, accessible experiences. To give this exploration real-life context, I created a series of journeys for users who want to learn about sustainable fashion, an industry with a …

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The release of Shape Tape foundation, a facial cosmetics line by Tarte Cosmetics, sparked disappointment and outrage in consumers for the lack of racial inclusivity in the range of shades offered. This came as a surprise to Tarte who, from their beginning has been a very socially aware and ecologically thoughtful company. Was this outrage justified? Did Tarte owe their customers an apology? And, if so, how should they go about making amends?

When Tarte released an apology, they further angered consumers who took to social media to express their dissatisfaction. The Shape Tape foundation release sparked a debate on …

Drawing upon the Theory of Consumption Value, this empirical study developed a readiness-value model and examined the direct effect of customer readiness on customer value types and the mediation impact of perceived emotional and functional value toward products being used in the relationship between customer readiness and customers’ upgrade intention, customers’ loyalty intention toward the brands they are currently using and customers’ affective commitment toward their current service providers. Surveys obtained from 174 adult respondents were analyzed, and they show that customer readiness directly and significantly impacts all types of value: emotional, functional, social, monetary and epistemic. Perceived emotional value …
