Strategies To Mitigate Negative Social Media Communications In Collegiate Athletics, Jennifer A. Parks

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Harmful social media communications in collegiate athletics are challenging, compelling athletic administrators to implement strategies to mitigate costly damage to the university. Grounded in framing theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies some collegiate athletic administrators use to mitigate negative social media communications by their student-athletes and coaches that may cause problems resulting in reputational damage to the brand, negative publicity, financial loss, sanctions, and fines for the university or college. Participants were 4 collegiate athletic administrators located in the southeastern United States, who had a social media policy and strategies to successfully mitigate …

The Executive Director Experiences Of African American Women In Mainstream Nonprofit Performing Arts Organizations, Davida S. Gobin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African American women are presently underrepresented in mainstream nonprofit performing arts organizations (PAOs) throughout the United States. Despite this inequality, a small number of African American women have overcome the odds and have productively earned senior leadership roles as executive directors in mainstream nonprofit PAOs. Using the conceptual frameworks of intersectionality and critical race feminism, the purpose of this study was to explore the shared lived experiences of African American women in executive director positions and the impact of race and gender on their leadership development and training for advancement in a mainstream nonprofit PAO. Four research questions explored the …

Some organizational leaders of the United States Sun Belt National Hockey League (NHL) teams do not possess the skills or experiences to take advantage of the opportunities developed from successful business applications to increase revenues. Grounded in Porter's 5 forces model and Porter's competitive strategy theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies used by organizational leaders of Sun Belt hockey teams to increase revenues. The participants comprised 5 organizational leaders from NHL teams located in Sun Belt locations …

Emotional Intelligence, Turnover Intention, And Commitment Among Nonprofit Employees, Tabitha Brewster Jan 2020

Emotional Intelligence, Turnover Intention, And Commitment Among Nonprofit Employees, Tabitha Brewster

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Employee turnover is a persistent problem contributing to financial issues and declining

productivity in nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits cannot fulfill their core missions of

providing services to people in need when managing staffing disruptions. Measuring

employee turnover intention can determine the probability of employee turnover, and a

potential predictor of turnover intention is emotional intelligence, an area unstudied in the

nonprofit sector. This study was designed to explore this relationship, in addition to the

employee's commitment to the organization. The population consisted of 273 nonprofit

employees older than 18 years, working in a nonsupervisory capacity. They completed an

online survey consisting …

Earning Extra Credit Or Losing Extra Credit? A Classroom Experiment On Framing Incentives As Gains Or Losses, Vassilis Dalakas, Kristin Stewart Jan 2020

Earning Extra Credit Or Losing Extra Credit? A Classroom Experiment On Framing Incentives As Gains Or Losses, Vassilis Dalakas, Kristin Stewart

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This exploratory study examines if the way incentives are framed (gains versus losses) impacts how students respond to them. Sixty-two students in two sections of the same undergraduate Marketing course were offered the incentive of an optional final exam by answering correctly quiz questions throughout the semester. One section received the incentive as a gain (opportunity to earn an optional final exam if you get enough quiz points) whereas the other section received it as a loss (final is optional, but you may lose it if you don’t get enough quiz points). Consistent with the principles of loss aversion, framing …

A Guide For Early Career Success In Academic Research, Obinna O. Obilo, William B. Locander, David A. Locander

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Balancing the research, teaching, and service facets is important to achieving success in academia. Doctoral programs should prepare their students to successfully navigate and balance all three of these facets. We focus on the research facet in this study and draw from the experience of a panel of accomplished researchers within the discipline, to compile a set of guidelines for doctoral students and new faculty. Analyzing the qualitative results from the panel interviews, we find that to ensure success within the research facet, one must effectively manage three emergent focal distinctions; a relationship with: oneself, others, and with the work.

Customer Service Challenges In Omni-Channel Retailing—An Exploratory Study Of Vague Language In Retailer Customer Service Policies, Terence L. Holmes, Edward C. Brewer Jan 2020

Customer Service Challenges In Omni-Channel Retailing—An Exploratory Study Of Vague Language In Retailer Customer Service Policies, Terence L. Holmes, Edward C. Brewer

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Retailers are interacting with customers via an ever-increasing number of touchpoints. The addition of social media and mobile devices to the traditional physical and virtual retail platforms has created an evolving consumer practice of using several such "touchpoints" in the course of a single purchase (the "omni-channel”). The difficulty of providing high levels of customer service has increased with the necessity of managing multiple channels under the retailer’s control and coordinating formally or informally with touchpoints not directly within the retailer’s own operations. Multiple sources of potentially conflicting information (e.g., order fulfillment) can lead to miscommunication, and thus poor service …

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Sales education research recently has turned its attention to using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, but much remains in our understanding of its use in the online and virtual sales education environment. AI can be useful to helping online students improve their sales presentations and vocal delivery skills. Examined through the lens of control value theory, this study is a pilot investigation into the effectiveness of using AI technology in the online classroom to help sales education students improve their vocal delivery skills in sales presentations. Based on a paired samples t-test, our results indicated that student use of AI technology …

Blockchain Technology And The Future Of Video Games, Is Presence Still Relevant?, Stef Nicovich, Jessica Scheld Jan 2020

Blockchain Technology And The Future Of Video Games, Is Presence Still Relevant?, Stef Nicovich, Jessica Scheld

Atlantic Marketing Journal

BlockChain technology has grown exponentially over the last several decades. Early on, cryptocurrency presented a substitute for hard currency as a way to purchase goods and services. Recently, cryptocurrency has entered the video game world. How cryptocurrency, which has value outside of a video game, may impact the virtual reality world, is an open question. Presence, or the state of being in an environment, will be affected by the ability to escape within video games as cryptocurrencies are used. As video games often provide a place to escape the real world, bringing the real world into the game may have …

The Counterfeit Conundrum: A Case Study To Examine The Best Way To Combat Counterfeit Consumption, Heather Kirkwood, Thomas Tanner, Ashutosh Dixit

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Estimated at more than $500 billion, counterfeits are a booming industry. The negative impacts can no longer be ignored. As evidenced by the industry growth, efforts to combat consumption of counterfeit products have largely failed. This case study examines the counterfeit industry and a campaign developed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency. It presents the reader the opportunity to contemplate viable solutions for ending counterfeit consumption.

Unintended Impacts On Entrepreneurs During Covid-19 – Pandemic Creates Unforeseeable Opportunities Of A Lifetime, Ryan Matthews Jan 2020

Unintended Impacts On Entrepreneurs During Covid-19 – Pandemic Creates Unforeseeable Opportunities Of A Lifetime, Ryan Matthews

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Select entrepreneurs are successful for a reason. One reason being, they have been able to use their skills to execute during times of chaos and panic, sometimes using these times as an opportunity to identify and exploit new or existing opportunities. Now and then, the external business environment changes in a manner that was never imagined or planned, therefore creating unintended impacts or new opportunities. During times of chaos, will these entrepreneurs pursue newly present opportunities that were not planned, or will they stick to their comfort zone? While several studies have been conducted looking at the characteristics of the …

Revisiting The Beneficiaries Of The Scotus Ruling Striking Down Paspa, Sam Fullerton, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall

AMTP Proceedings 2020

A Supreme Court ruling in 2018 essentially rendered restrictions on sports gambling to run counter to states’ rights, thus in conflict with the Constitution of the United States. As a consequence, 13 states and the District of Columbia now have legalized sports gambling. Initial research into the consequences of this ruling identified 12 potential beneficiaries. Subsequent research entailing an assessment of new literature and a survey of executive opinion involving a number of marketing executives who work within the field of sports marketing expanded the findings from the earlier study. This extension of the preliminary study found 14 beneficiaries rather …

AMTP Proceedings 2020

The dynamic environment of higher education defines and redefines roles of faculty and administrators. Department chairs have a unique position in colleges as they are part of the faculty as well as administrators. Expectations from department chairs include a long list of activities. They have to deal with a variety of tenured and tenure track faculty at different levels, such as instructors, senior instructors, assistant, associate, full professors, and per-course faculty (adjuncts). Students are another group for them to manage, including undergraduate, graduate students with different concentrations, majors and minors as well as transfer, study-away, study abroad students besides graduate …

Investigating The Influence Of A Web Based Logistics Tool On The Effectiveness Of Operations For The Center Of Innovation For Logistics Of Georgia, David Vaughn

Honors College Theses

Research suggests a correlation between advancements in logistics infrastructure and the development rate of regional economies. Some states have identified this correlation and have taken steps to create specialized entities aimed at catalyzing the growth of logistics within their state. In the state of Georgia, the Center of Innovation for Logistics is the entity responsible for coordinating logistic development activities. As part of their responsibilities, they are tasked with fulfilling information requests regarding logistics infrastructure availability throughout the state. However, the system is used to process these requests is antiquated and extremely inefficient. In an attempt to ameliorate this process, …

Can Social Media Marketing Effects Be Sustained?, Manisha Mathur Jan 2020

Can Social Media Marketing Effects Be Sustained?, Manisha Mathur

AMTP Proceedings 2020

The social media strategies have changed the landscape of customer-firm associations. Yet, little is understood about the sustained effects of social media, particularly on firm performance. This research examines the extent to which social media plays a key role in the development of branding and marketing strategies that lead to sustained competitive advantage. We use econometric modeling to determine whether a brand’s performance remains stable with the extended implementation of social media marketing and how long the effect of social media is beneficial for a firm. The results yield significant implications for both marketing theory and practice.

The objective is …

Innowacyjność –Polski Problem Rozwojowy. Doganianie Zachodu W Warunkach Nieciągłości, Grzegorz Jędrzejczak, Henryk Sterniczuk

Monografie/Monographs

Abandoning Copyright, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski Jan 2020

Abandoning Copyright, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski

Faculty Articles

For nearly two hundred years, U.S. copyright law has assumed that owners may voluntarily abandon their rights in a work. But scholars have largely ignored copyright abandonment, and case law on the subject is fragmented and inconsistent. As a result, abandonment remains poorly theorized, owners can avail themselves of no reliable mechanism to abandon their works, and the practice remains rare. This Article seeks to bring copyright abandonment out of the shadows, showing that it is a doctrine rich in conceptual, normative, and practical significance. Unlike abandonment of real and chattel property, which imposes significant public costs in exchange for …

Notice Risk And Registered Agency, Andrew K. Jennings Jan 2020

Notice Risk And Registered Agency, Andrew K. Jennings

Faculty Articles

To sue a firm is to sue an artificial person, making the most reliable service method—physically handing papers to the defendant—unusable. This problem illustrates notice risk: if a plaintiff’s service obligations are loose, it is advantaged (because the defendant may never receive notice), whereas if they are strict, the defendant is advantaged (because the plaintiff may struggle to effect service). For litigation involving corporate defendants, civil procedure and corporate law mitigate this problem through a technology for managing notice risk: registered agency. A firm using this technology, because it cannot be served directly, appoints an agent who will accept papers …

Recognising The Place Of Food Tourism In Ireland: An Autoethnographic Perspective, John D. Mulcahy

Doctoral

This is an autoethnographic account, utilising prior publications, of my role in positioning food as a critical ingredient in Ireland’s tourism policy and strategy since 2009. As the architect and instigator of this project, my priorities were threefold: first, working from the ground up identifying local activists across the food tourism landscape to create an active and vibrant network; second, providing thought leadership for food tourism; and third, encouraging and funding others to conduct and disseminate similar research. I have chosen six book chapters, published as a result of my advocacy strategy, for this PhD by prior publication. They are …

This study focuses on the impact that occupational fraud has on the nonprofit sector and how nonprofit organizations react to fraud occurrences. Specifically, it focuses on how often nonprofits choose to prosecute fraudsters. It also explores how the negative publicity surrounding a fraud incident in a nonprofit might affect the subsequent amount of charitable donations that nonprofit will receive. Finally, this study will explore whether or not nonprofits have a fiduciary duty to their stakeholders to prosecute fraudsters and publicize fraud incidents.

Proprietary Costs Of Financial Reporting, Country-Level Attributes, And Financial Statement Comparability, Jangho Gil Jan 2020

Proprietary Costs Of Financial Reporting, Country-Level Attributes, And Financial Statement Comparability, Jangho Gil

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the impact of country-level attributes on the relationship between proprietary costs of financial reporting and financial statement comparability. Given that managers use discretion in financial reporting, proprietary costs of financial reporting and country-level attributes could play a role in shaping managers' financial reporting behavior, which, in turn, could have an impact on financial statement comparability. For international study, I use four country-level latent factors, suggested by Isidro et al. (2019), that categorize most country-level features that affect financial reporting practices. I find that the negative relationship between proprietary costs and comparability is stronger in countries with relatively …

Achieving Effectiveness And Innovation In U.S. Public Organizations Through Ability-Enhancing And Opportunity-Enhancing Soft/Commitment High Performance Work Practices, Kingshuk Saha

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

It is well-established in the management literature that HPWPs improve productivity in the private sector. But does HPWPs work in the public sector? A thorough literature search revealed only 45 HPWPs studies done in the public sector. The first purpose of this Dissertation is a thorough literature review of these 45 studies. Out of these 45 studies, only 12 had samples obtained from the U.S. Hence, it can be argued that there is much to be discovered about HPWPs in the U.S. public sector. The second purpose of this Dissertation is to categorize HPWPs in the U.S. public sector based …
