Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide highly prevalent chronic metabolic disorder, characterized by hyperglycemia, and is associated with significant complications, including the microvascular complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy and the macrovascular complications such as cardiovascular, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease, thus leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Patients with diabetes were found to be 1.4-3 times more likely to suffer from comorbid depression when compared to non-diabetics, and depression in diabetes is usually persistent and/or recurrent. Depression was found to be increased among patients with type I and type II diabetes mellitus, which have higher glycosylated hemoglobin. Association …

A meta-analysis of oncology papers from around the world revealed that cancer patients who lived more than 50 miles away from hospital centers routinely presented with more advanced stages of disease at diagnosis, exhibited lower adherence to prescribed treatments, presented with poorer diagnoses, and reported a lower quality of life than patients who lived nearer to care facilities. Connected health approaches—or the use of broadband and telecommunications technologies to evaluate, diagnose, and monitor patients beyond the clinic—are becoming an indispensable tool in medicine to overcome the obstacle of distance.

The Net Stable Funding Ratio (NSFR), a liquidity standard introduced by Basel III, seeks to promote a better match between the liquidity of a bank’s assets and the manner in which the bank funds those assets. The NSFR requires banks to maintain a minimum amount of funding deemed “stable” by the Basel framework based on the liquidity of the banks’ assets and activities over a one-year timeframe. Hedge funds rely on “prime brokerage” units within banks to provide leverage. With the enhanced capital requirements and new liquidity standards introduced by Basel III driving up the cost to banks of engaging in such financing, prime brokers have begun to offer an alternative means of providing hedge fund clients with leveraged exposure to securities. Known as synthetic financing, this alternative requires the prime broker to enter into derivatives contracts with the clients. In December 2011, the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of JPMorgan Chase (JPM) instructed the bank’s Chief Investment Office to reduce the size of its Synthetic Credit Portfolio (SCP) during 2012, so that JPM could decrease its Risk-Weighted Assets as the bank prepared to adopt the impending Basel III bank capital regulations. However, the SCP traders were also told to minimize the trading costs incurred to reduce Risk-Weighted Assets, while still maintaining the opportunity to profit from unexpected corporate bankruptcies. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. In Lebanon, hormone positive patients resistant to endocrine treatments account for most of the cases. These two facts directed the attention to evaluate everolimus-exemestane use in hormonal receptor positive metastatic breast cancer patients, in Lebanon. A multi-center, observational, retrospective cohort study was carried out by screening 69 metastatic breast cancer patient’s files in order to determine the progression free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and side effects of everolimus. This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial effect of thiamine dilaurylsulfate (TDS) on Hummus Dip, a traditional Lebanese food. A heat shock step was introduced after hummus cooking and before dip preparation. Lower bacterial counts were obtained even in the absence of any preservative and with better texture compared to non-heat shocked dip. Supplementing the dip with 2% TDS and 1% Malic acid completely inhibited bacterial growth over a period of one month at 4oC. Halt in bacterial growth was confirmed by growth curves.
