Do Covid-19 Cases And Government Response To Covid-19 Drive Mispricing In Cross-Listed Companies?, Chomtarn Junanukul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research is to examine impact of COVID-19 cases and government response to COVID-19 to cross-listed companies’ stock return, mispricing and volatility of the mispricing, using evidence from 164 Canadian companies’ stocks listed on Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX shares) and cross-listed in New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ (US shares). Our results show that there is negative impact from growth of COVID-19 cases to stock return and positive impact from government response to COVID-19 to stock return in both Canada and US. As for impact to mispricing, using price premium of stock listed in Canada relative to US as a …

Measuring The Value Of Internal Corporate Events From Attendees’ Perspective: Multidimensional Scale Development, Inna Soifer Jan 2021

Measuring The Value Of Internal Corporate Events From Attendees’ Perspective: Multidimensional Scale Development, Inna Soifer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose – Business events is a trillion-dollar sector of the meetings and events industry that supports millions of jobs. Despite the social and economic impact of the meetings, expositions, events, and conventions, only a few studies have examined perceived value in the business events context. This study addresses this research gap by developing a multi-item, multidimensional scale assessing attendee perception of corporate event value.Design/methodology/approach – This study utilized a mixed-method approach and followed widely accepted psychometric scale development procedures. The scale was developed using a multistep process: item generation, expert review, development sample 1 of 506 respondents via Qualtrics Online …

The Process For Nonprofits And Foundations To Engage In Productive Partnerships, Anna Mccutcheon Jan 2021

The Process For Nonprofits And Foundations To Engage In Productive Partnerships, Anna Mccutcheon

Graduate Research Papers

Nonprofits and foundations are encouraged to work together, seamlessly, by their constituents, peers, and even each other, but forming a collaborative partnership is not solely determined by preference or opinion (Le et al, 2018). Both foundations and nonprofits face multiple challenges when pursuing on-going, productive relationships with each other. Specifically, expectations that arise before, during, and after the grant proposal process, inconsistency with program performance and measurement expectations, and a lack of candid transparency that prohibits mutual lines of communication between these two entities.

An Attention-Based View Of Strategic Human Resource Management, Soo-Hoon Lee Jan 2021

An Attention-Based View Of Strategic Human Resource Management, Soo-Hoon Lee

Management Faculty Publications

In spite of the designation, research in strategic human resource management (SHRM) has largely focused on tactical rather than strategic issues. These studies have attempted to explain whether firm performance is associated with “best-practice” or “best-fit” human resource management (HRM) practices. The focus on internally consistent (horizontal fit) HRM practices is better characterized as tactical implementation than as strategic formulation. In the latter, HRM leads rather than follows the firm’s long-term responses to shifts in the firm’s competitive and market environment. In this paper, I propose an attention-based view of the firm to reframe SHRM research and policy to support …

The Relationship Between Organizations' Response To Customer Complaints, Customer Trust, And Loyalty, Abimbola Ajibola

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between organizations’ responses to customer complaints and their effects on customer loyalty and trust. Four hypotheses were established for this study to help us gain a greater understanding of the dynamics of the responses to customer complaints and their relationship with trust and loyalty. Five independent variables (apology, timeliness, explanation, compensation, and dialogue/active listening) and two dependent variables (trust and brand loyalty) were used to test the hypotheses. An online survey was conducted through Qualtrics and data were collected from participants who were students at a Midwestern University. Facebook …

Strategic Surrogates Or Sad Sinners: U.S. Taxation Of Bartering In Digital Services, Mark J. Cowan, Joshua Cutler, Ryan Baxter Jan 2021

Strategic Surrogates Or Sad Sinners: U.S. Taxation Of Bartering In Digital Services, Mark J. Cowan, Joshua Cutler, Ryan Baxter

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The COVID-19 pandemic caused both a surge in technology use and a deterioration in government finances. At the same time, big tech companies are under scrutiny by lawmakers for tax avoidance, antitrust issues, and other concerns. These realities call for governments to reassess tax policy toward tech companies and for tech companies to reassess legal strategy toward taxes. State and federal governments' tax bases are eroding because of the noncash, barter nature of modern transactions. When a taxpayer uses “free” digital services such as e-mail, social media, or search engines, she pays via access to her personal data or attention. …

A Hebrew Republic Of Taxation?: Henry George’S Single Tax, Hebraic Law, And Unearned Income, Joshua Cutler Jan 2021

A Hebrew Republic Of Taxation?: Henry George’S Single Tax, Hebraic Law, And Unearned Income, Joshua Cutler

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Can millennia-old religious ideas offer insights into modern tax law? I explore this question through the hugely popular, yet largely forgotten, tax movement of political economist Henry George. Seeking to explain why poverty always seemed to increase along with progress, George proposed that, as societies advanced, land owners were able to capture an increasing share of unearned wealth. To remedy this, George proposed a “Single Tax” on the unearned income from land. George’s tax movement gained popularity largely because it was founded on widely-held ideas originating in the Hebrew Bible. Yet, the religious foundation of George’s tax movement has been …

The Decision To Play: College Football In The Era Of Covid-19, Jason Tabit Jan 2021

The Decision To Play: College Football In The Era Of Covid-19, Jason Tabit

Undergraduate Honors Theses

COVID-19 upended life around the world, including on college campuses across the U.S. where institutions restructured their class modalities, campus life, extracurricular activities, and intercollegiate athletics - including college football. We examine the factors that led universities to make their decisions to play or not play college football during fall 2020, hypothesizing that the decision to play would be consistent with the decision about class modality for health and safety reasons, and that monetary and political motivations would also play a significant role. We collected data for 249 institutions and used logistic regression techniques to test our hypotheses. We ultimately …

Critical Factors That Influence Job Attitudes Among Employees In The Disaster Management Sector, Leslie Myers Mccall Jan 2021

Critical Factors That Influence Job Attitudes Among Employees In The Disaster Management Sector, Leslie Myers Mccall

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Professional attitudes toward results-oriented performance cut across job sectors; however, they are pronounced among disaster management personnel. Within the disaster management sector (DMS), commitment to the organization is critical to retention and quality services and has been shown to be related to degree of work satisfaction; however, research remains lacking related to the specific needs of the DMS related to employee and volunteer worker attraction, engagement, and retention. The purpose of this study was to explore job attitudes among disaster management sector (DMS) workers to create and support a more effective solution to employee job attitude problems and to promote …

Strategies Used To Retain United States Veterans, Lucy Rene Moore Jan 2021

Strategies Used To Retain United States Veterans, Lucy Rene Moore

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe United States has a 20% average overall turnover rate, requiring employers to absorb the additional costs related to employee turnover, which can exceed 300% of each departed employee’s annual salary. Human resource leaders who lack strategies to retain veterans as employees experience increased turnover and replacement costs. Grounded in person organization fit theory and human capital theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the strategies leaders in human resource departments use to retain United States veterans. The participants included three human resources leaders in Washington who developed successful retention strategies for veterans. Data were …

Relationship Among Military Veteran Employee Job Satisfaction, Job Motivation, And Employee Turnover, Michael David Crow Jan 2021

Relationship Among Military Veteran Employee Job Satisfaction, Job Motivation, And Employee Turnover, Michael David Crow

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Military veterans are quitting their first job after separating from the military service at an excessively high rate. Reducing employee turnover among military veterans is essential for organizational and HR managers to increase the company’s profitability and productivity. Grounded in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationships among military veteran employee job satisfaction, job motivation, and employee turnover. Data were collected from survey responses of 85 military veterans from Texas. Participants had at least 2 years of active federal service and were separated from the armed forces no longer than …

A New Explanation For Samuelson’S Dictum And The Stock Market: Novel Events And Knightian Uncertainty, Nicholas Mangee Jan 2021

A New Explanation For Samuelson’S Dictum And The Stock Market: Novel Events And Knightian Uncertainty, Nicholas Mangee

Finance: Faculty Publications

Samuelson’s Dictum argues that aggregate stock markets do not convincingly reflect information on fundamentals, such as dividends or earnings, and are, thus, inefficient in setting prices. By contrast, firm-level stock prices share a much closer connection with fundamentals and are, therefore, deemed relatively efficient. This paper presents an alternative explanation: Knightian uncertainty stemming from historically unique events produces differential impacts on investor forecasting bounds at the aggregate versus firm level. Several uncertainty proxies are employed from millions of unscheduled events identified in the universe of Dow Jones & Co. financial news reports over the last twenty years. Uncertainty based on …

Variants Of Mixtures: Information Properties And Applications, Omid Ardakani, Majid Asadi, Nader Ebrahimi, Ehsan Soofi

Economics: Faculty Publications

In recent years, we have studied information properties of various types of mixtures of probability distributions and introduced a new type, which includes previously known mixtures as special cases. These studies are disseminated in different fields: reliability engineering, econometrics, operations research, probability, the information theory, and data mining. This paper presents a holistic view of these studies and provides further insights and examples. We note that the insightful probabilistic formulation of the mixing parameters stipulated by Behboodian (1972) is required for a representation of the well-known information measure of the arithmetic mixture. Applications of this information measure presented in this …

The Stressors Faced By Retail Workers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nada Elnahla, Leighann C. Neilson

AMTP Proceedings 2021

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, brick-and-mortar retail workers have been hailed as heroic frontline employees. No matter where a retail store is located or the severity of the lockdown, retail workers have many new regulations and guidelines to follow and implement in order to protect both themselves and their customers. Using a qualitative research methodology, this exploratory research focuses on how the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting drastic changes in the retail sector are affecting the workers in North America. Four main stressors are identified: fear of the unknown, fear of infection, mistreatment by consumers, and the role of the powerless …

The Evolving Nature Of The Inside And Outside Sales Relationship: Cooperation And Conflict, Zori Perkins, Claire Durant, Stefan Sleep

AMTP Proceedings 2021

Firms are increasingly turning to inside sales, salespeople working from a single or virtual location versus traveling to customers, because of the significant costs savings and improvements in communications technology. As a result, there is growing interaction between the inside and outside sales organizations. Through a series of interviews with inside and outside sale representatives, this research explores the evolving relationship between the two. The results of the interviews show that the sales responsibilities for inside and outside sales vary significantly across firms. Additionally, the research finds that personal relationships play a critical role in the success of the inside …
