Electric Cooperative Managers’ Strategies To Enhance Organizational Commitment To Increase Employee Productivity, Michael Edward White
Electric Cooperative Managers’ Strategies To Enhance Organizational Commitment To Increase Employee Productivity, Michael Edward White
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lack of effective leadership strategies contributes to a reduction in employee engagement and productivity. Managers are concerned about the lack of effective leadership strategies because it negatively affects employee engagement and productivity, reducing organizational growth. Grounded in Bass’s transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore effective leadership strategies used to enhance employee engagement and increase productivity. Five managers from an electric cooperative in Northwest Florida who implemented effective leadership strategies participated in the study. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and a review of organizational documents. Data were analyzed using Yin’s five-step approach. …
Evidence-Based Hospice Care Education For Healthcare Clinicians, Nonie E. Weir
Evidence-Based Hospice Care Education For Healthcare Clinicians, Nonie E. Weir
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Vulnerable populations with a terminal illness, who reside in a nursing home setting, continue to experience psychological, physical, and emotional effects that lead to end-of- life (EOL) suffering and discomfort. Globally, millions of individuals receive care from a hospice provider. By 2030, this figure will triple due to the increased lifespan of the geriatric population. The literature review has revealed that the practical problem is the lack of hospice care education received by healthcare clinicians. It is, therefore, important to prepare and educate healthcare clinicians about a peaceful death through an individualized plan-of-care (POC) from a holistic approach. The purpose …

Preventing Injuries And Fatalities In Inherently Dangerous Work Environments, Markeith Porter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Shipyard safety programs have uncertainty and vulnerability. Shipyard program managers are concerned with safety to mitigate negative business system performance because of unplanned safety events. Grounded in the contingency theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the strategies managers use to mitigate liability claims associated with the high numbers of injuries and fatalities in dangerous work environments. The participants were three program manager representatives in the American Southwest who use successful strategies to reduce injuries and fatalities in the shipyard industry. The data were collected using semistructured interviews, public documents and analyzed using a six-step …

Configurational-Based Institutional Analysis: Unbundling The Multi-Dimensional State Fragility Construct, Joshua K. Ault, Andrew Spicer
Faculty Publications
To guide researchers interested in replicating our configurational approach to comparative institutional analysis, we report on a methodology that builds from existing state fragility indices to differentiate between types of state fragility in 189 countries across the world. We first present the steps we used to identify three constituent dimensions of state fragility. We then report how we configured these first-order institutional measures to build a large-N, fuzzy set qualitative set analysis (fs/QCA) of variation in the degree and type of informal economic sectors found across the world. Our discussion of the methodology shows that:
- Configurational-based analysis requires unbundling aggregate …

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects
This research paper will focus on student engagement programs associated with collegiate performing arts centers and art programs and how these programs engage and support students prior to and during the Covid-19 pandemic. It will look at the ways arts administrators identify and evaluate the barriers and motivations related to participation within arts programming. Lastly, this research will explore the ways in which these programs have adapted to the pandemic and how these innovations and adaptations might continue, post-pandemic, in order to better support faculty, staff, and students. Data was gathered through interviews with six student engagement professionals who work …
Consequences Of Moral Transgressions: How Regulatory Focus Orientation Motivates Or Hinders Moral Decoupling, Kirsten Cowan, Atefeh Yazdanparast
Consequences Of Moral Transgressions: How Regulatory Focus Orientation Motivates Or Hinders Moral Decoupling, Kirsten Cowan, Atefeh Yazdanparast
School of Business
How can firms mitigate the impact of moral violations on consumer evaluations? This question has pervaded the business ethics literature. Though prior research has identified decoupling as a moral reasoning strategy where consumers separate moral judgments from evaluations (avoiding moral compromise and dissonance), it is unclear what motivates individuals to decouple. It is the objective of this research to explore regulatory focus theory (i.e., a framework examining consumer mindsets as prevention or promotion orientated) as a motivating factor for moral decoupling. Three experiments are undertaken. Study one demonstrates that with a prevention mindset (e.g., analytical thinking) as opposed to promotion …

JOHNSON CITY – The main project in one of Kamyl Harvey-Bogan’s classes at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine transformed into an opportunity for the fourth-year medical student to raise awareness about racial disparities in health care and bring attention to ways in which future physicians can overcome them.
Last summer, Harvey-Bogan took an elective course that taught the students how to build medical simulation cases for medical education. The students’ final assignment was to develop their own case by creating a patient, determining the patient’s background (including medical and social history), identifying the patient’s chief complaint, and …

Covid-19 And Work-Family Conflict: A Gendered Lens Required For Developing Organizational Benefits And Programs, Qendresa Isniqi
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted people's work and family lives. The work-family conflict has seen an increase with the onset of the pandemic as families have found themselves in complex roles such as family sustainers, teachers for their children, and family caregivers while quarantined with the same individuals for months. Concurrently there have been expectations grown from the employers to introduce effective programs or services to support employees so that an expected amount of productivity is maintained while also maintaining a sense of care for their employees. Some of the strategies suggested in the literature include flexible scheduling, leadership communication, …

Essays On Evasion And Enforcement In Value Added Tax (Vat), Syed Jawad Ali Shah
Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration
Value added tax (VAT) based on credit invoice system is the most common consumption tax in the world. Despite its self-regulating nature, VAT faces challenges in developing countries who have limited state capacity to check evasion and enforce tax on informal sectors of the economy. The tax authorities introduce policy interventions that can target the evasive behavior of firms interacting with informal sectors. My dissertation seeks to provide insight into three such policy reforms in Pakistan’s VAT regime. Therefore, this dissertation is composed of three essays.
In first essay of my dissertation, titled “Using Computerization to enforce VAT: Evidence from …

An Empirical Examination Of The Impact Of Organizational Injustice And Negative Affect On Attitude And Non-Compliance With Information Security Policy, Celestine Kemah
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Employees’ non-compliance with Information Security (IS) policies is an important socio-organizational issue that represents a serious threat to the effective management of information security programs in organizations. Prior studies have demonstrated that information security policy (ISP) violation in the workplace is a common significant problem in organizations. Some of these studies have earmarked the importance of this problem by drawing upon cognitive processes to explain compliance with information security policies, while others have focused solely on factors related to non-compliance behavior, one of which is affect. Despite the findings from these studies, there is a dearth of extant literature that …
Improving Employees’ Compliance With Password Policies, Enas Albataineh
Improving Employees’ Compliance With Password Policies, Enas Albataineh
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Employees’ lack of compliance with password policies increases password susceptibility, which leads to financial damages to the organizations as a result of information disclosure, fraud, and unauthorized transactions. However, few studies have examined what motivates employees to comply with password policies.
The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine what factors influence employees’ compliance with password policies. A theoretical model was developed based on Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), General Deterrence Theory (GDT), Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), and Psychological Ownership Theory to explain employees’ compliance with password policies.
A non-probability convenience sample was employed. The sample consisted of …

Two Essays On Food Environment, Nutrition, And Food Insecurity, Suliman Abdulaziz Almojel
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
A healthy food environment is fundamental to good health. It contributes to the reduction of obesity and the development of healthy eating habits. In spite of this, many people in the United States (US) have been hypnotized to become obese due to the current food environment. Recently, the US has consistently ranked high in the world in terms of obesity. The rising rate is symptomatic of consuming unhealthy diets. Besides, the double-edged crisis of the US food environment and obesity poses a major threat to food security and public health. Therefore, studying the US food environment is important to sustain …

Perceiving Organization As An Entity : The Relationship Of Entitativity And Organizational Justice Perception, Wei Zhuang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Entitativity is an important group construct that has received little attention in the organizational psychology literature. The current study based on 343 employed individuals explores the potential role of entitativity perceptions of organizations on the relationship between justice perceptions and employees’ emotional and behavioral reactions. Results of a three-wave survey study suggest that entitativity perceptions are positively associated with employees’ experienced gratitude toward organizations but have no relationship with employees experienced anger toward organizations. In addition, this study provides evidence that positive emotions can mediate the effect of justice perceptions on positive behavioral outcomes, and negative emotions can mediate the …

How Blockchain And Ai Enable Personal Data Privacy And Support Cybersecurity, Stanton Heister, Kristi Yuthas
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent increases in security breaches and digital surveillance highlight the need for improved privacy and security, particularly over users’ personal data. Advances in cybersecurity and new legislation promise to improve data protection. Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies provide novel opportunities for protecting user data through decentralized identity and other privacy mechanisms. These systems can allow users greater sovereignty through tools that enable them to own and control their own data. Artificial intelligence provides further possibilities for enhancing system and user security, enriching data sets, and supporting improved analytical models.

COVID-19 has had a substantial impact on transit workers’ lives, especially among public-facing vehicle operators. The current project examined relationships between workers’ knowledge and perceptions of their employer’s COVID-19 safety responses, job attitudes, and health. We surveyed transit workers (N = 174) between July and August 2020 and followed up 3 months later. Fifty-seven workers responded to the follow-up survey. Surveys addressed workers’ knowledge and perceptions of their employer implementing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-recommended COVID-19 safety responses, COVID-19 risk perceptions, job attitudes, and health factors. Employees reported knowledge of their employer implementing ~8 of 12 CDC-recommended responses. …

Political Economy Of The Production Of Heritage Space In A Centro Histórico: Attracting Real Estate Capital, Expelling People. The Case Of Cartagena (Colombia), Camilo Rey-Sabogal
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
Cartagena is a South American city whose historical built environment has been recognized as a World Heritage Site due to the preservation of elements of the Spanish military architecture of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. This recognition promoted a tourist and real estate boom in the Centro Histórico and, as a result, its inhabitants have faced gentrification dynamics that are expelling them to other areas of the city. During the last 15 years, these dynamics have shown a strong acceleration. Therefore, the Centro Histórico is experiencing, on the one hand, huge inflows of capital for the purchase of properties …

"Since the passage of the Dodd-Frank Act in 2010, US publicly traded companies subject to proxy rules must allow shareholders to submit an advisory vote on the compensation of their most highly compensated executives at least every three years (known as Say-on-Pay votes), and on how often shareholders would like to be presented with Say-on-Pay votes. Given the potential interplay between executive compensation and succession planning, as illustrated in recent Center for Executive Succession research that shows executive compensation and executive succession decisions appear to be related when it comes to the selection of internal CEO appointments, we sought to …

The Impact Of The 2020 Crises On Executive And Board Dynamics: Results Of The 2021 Hr@Moore Survey Of Chros, Patrick M. Wright, Donald J. Schepker, Anthony J. Nyberg, Sam Strizver
Reports
As part of the 2021 HR@Moore Survey of Chief Human Resource Officers (CHROs) we sought to identify how the COVID pandemic impacted CEO Succession Processes, Board member relationships, and aspects of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). We compared our results on the same measures from 2019 (pre-pandemic/racial justice crises), 2020 (midst of the pandemic/racial justice crises) and 2021 (post crises). The results from both direct questions about the impact of COVID on CEO succession and measures of the effectiveness of the processes over time suggest that the pandemic had little effect on CEO succession processes, other than causing firms to …

In response to the racial unrest and increased focus on social justice, organizations increased their emphasis on diversity issues in 2020. To understand one way in which organizations responded to this focus, we explored how the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer (CDO) role changed and the background characteristics of those in the role. The results indicate that the role increased in both internal and external visibility during this time, and that a large percentage of companies elevated the talent in the role. A majority of respondents indicated that the CDO role has become more influential and visible. In addition, …

One of the many responsibilities of the president is the management of the expansive federal government. From agenda planning to reform implementation, a political leader can impact the federal employees’ job role. The federal government, however, does not administer alone, top-down mandates are managed by tiers of management, with the front-line supervisors acting as the liaison to federal employees. Understanding a president’s leadership capital alongside the federal employee perceptions of job satisfaction and supervisory support can provide opportunities to gain insight into establishing and maintaining a public sector landscape that is effective and efficient.

Laws, Educational Outcomes, And Returns To Schooling Evidence From The First Wave Of U.S. State Compulsory Attendance Laws, Karen Clay, Jeff Lingwall, Melvin Stephens Jr.
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
The nineteenth and twentieth century saw two waves of state schooling laws. The first wave focused on children to age 14 and the second wave focused on high school. Using the full count 1940 census and a new coding of state laws, this paper provides new estimates of the effects of the first wave of laws. The analysis focuses on cohorts of prime working age between 1910 and 1940. IV estimates of returns to schooling range from 0.067 to 0.077. Quantile IV estimates show the returns were largest for the lowest quantiles, and were generally monotonically decreasing for higher quantiles.

Although extant research has shown that abusive supervision is a destructive and immoral form of leader behavior, theory provides conflicting perspectives on how supervisors respond to their own abusive behavior. We therefore draw upon and integrate moral cleansing theory and impression management and construction theory to explore whether and when supervisors engage in genuine reparations or impression management following episodes of abusive behavior. Results taken from a 3-week, experience sampling study of supervisors suggest support for the impression management path; following episodes of abusive behavior, supervisors higher on symbolized moral identity become more concerned with their image, and thus engage …
