Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

This research analyses high-frequency data of the cryptocurrency market in regards to intraday trading patterns related to algorithmic trading and its impact on the European cryptocurrency market. We study trading quantitatives such as returns, traded volumes, volatility periodicity, and provide summary statistics of return correlations to CRIX (CRyptocurrency IndeX), as well as respective overall high-frequency based market statistics with respect to temporal aspects. Our results provide mandatory insight into a market, where the grand scale employment of automated trading algorithms and the extremely rapid execution of trades might seem to be a standard based on media reports. Our findings on …

Do Needle Exchange Programs Cause More Harm To Injection Drug Users And Compromise The Safety Of The Communities In Which They Are In Place?, Amber L. Payne Jan 2021

Do Needle Exchange Programs Cause More Harm To Injection Drug Users And Compromise The Safety Of The Communities In Which They Are In Place?, Amber L. Payne

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Needle Exchange Programs (NEP) are put in place in regions in the US, where illegal injectable drug use is prevalent, in order to decrease the amount of blood borne diseases by at least 10%, such as Hepatitis C and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), being spread throughout the drug-using community. People and Healthcare Professionals in these communities have questioned if NEPs have caused more harm to the drug users and if they have compromised public safety due to incorrect disposal of syringes.

During a study in 2011, the spread of blood borne diseases in areas where NEPs were present, decreased among …

Association Of Electronic Prescription In Controlled Substances Used, Archana Suwal, Jemima Akinyi Okonjo Jan 2021

Association Of Electronic Prescription In Controlled Substances Used, Archana Suwal, Jemima Akinyi Okonjo

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: Controlled substances have been described as pharmaceuticals or illegal medicines that act primarily on the central nervous system and could cause physical and mental dependence, eventually leading to addiction. Prescription opioids were a significant contributor to the opioid epidemic, accounting for more than 70,000 opioid-related overdose deaths, including illicit and prescription opioids, between 2018 and 2019. The Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances (EPCS) initiative recently aimed to reduce rates of prescription opioid addiction, abuse, diversion, and death. The system for controlled substances had become more widely used as providers and governments trying to combat the opioid problem. Because …

Improving Volunteer Retention With Nonprofit Organizations Through Implementing Onboarding Training, Tawanda Lashone Carpenter Jan 2021

Improving Volunteer Retention With Nonprofit Organizations Through Implementing Onboarding Training, Tawanda Lashone Carpenter

Education Projects

Many nonprofit organizations are staples in the community as they provide services for disadvantaged and marginalized groups that seek services that are not easily accessible to them through for-profit organizations. Hence, the retention of volunteers is a challenge for many nonprofit organizations as they depend on volunteers to assist with the day-to-day tasks that cannot be accomplished by paid employees (Garner & Garner, 2011). During the time of this project, One Step Further, Inc. (OSF) Community Support and Nutrition Program (CSNP) was faced to deal with the national pandemic of COVID-19, leaving this organization to depend on paid staff exclusively. …

Redesigning An Onboarding Hiring Process For A Local Government Agency, Hannah Angel Jan 2021

Redesigning An Onboarding Hiring Process For A Local Government Agency, Hannah Angel

Education Projects

Hiring processes are an important process of an organization’s overall employee job satisfaction in the Department of Health and Human Services division. First impressions help establish a long-term relationship between an employee and a company. Onboarding and orientation involving surveys, advisors, and relationships within the company assist in retaining dedicated employees. Follow-up meetings are required to enable a successful team involvement relationship. Job satisfaction ensures a lower turnover rate in the hiring process for the company. Hiring processes involving onboarding and orientation ensure stability, trust, and comfort for the employee within an organization.

Protecting Third Parties In Contracts, Kishanthi Parella Jan 2021

Protecting Third Parties In Contracts, Kishanthi Parella

Scholarly Articles

Corporations routinely impose externalities on a broad range of non-shareholders, as illustrated by several unsuccessful lawsuits against corporations involving forced labor, human trafficking, child labor, and environmental harms in global supply chains. Lack of legal accountability subsequently translates into low legal risk for corporate misconduct, which reduces the likelihood of prevention. Corporate misconduct toward non-shareholders arises from a fundamental inconsistency within contract law regarding the status of third parties: On the one hand, we know that it takes a community to contract. Contracting parties often rely on multiple third parties—not signatories to the contract—to play important roles in facilitating exchange, …

Turnover During A Corporate Merger: How Workplace Network Change Influences Staying, M. Woehler, Theresa M. Floyd, N. Shah, J. E. Marineau, W. Sung, Travis J. Grosser, J. Fagan, G. Labianca Jan 2021

Turnover During A Corporate Merger: How Workplace Network Change Influences Staying, M. Woehler, Theresa M. Floyd, N. Shah, J. E. Marineau, W. Sung, Travis J. Grosser, J. Fagan, G. Labianca

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

The upheaval created by a merger can precipitate voluntary employee turnover, causing merging organizations to lose valuable knowledge-based resources and competencies precisely when they are needed most to achieve the merger’s integration goals. While prior research has shown that employees’ connections to coworkers reduce their likelihood of leaving, we know little about how personal social networks should change to increase the likelihood of staying through the disruptive post-merger integration period. In a pre–post study of social network change, we investigate over 15 million email communications between employees within two large merging consumer goods firms over 2 years. We use insights …

The Ties That Bind: Knowledge-Seeking Networks And Auditor Job Performance, Monika Causholli, Theresa M. Floyd, Nicole Thorne Jenkins, Scott M. Soltis Jan 2021

The Ties That Bind: Knowledge-Seeking Networks And Auditor Job Performance, Monika Causholli, Theresa M. Floyd, Nicole Thorne Jenkins, Scott M. Soltis

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

The dissemination of knowledge in audit firms is a critical process that has gone relatively unexamined by researchers. Using social network analysis to quantify the knowledge-seeking networks in a Big 4 audit firm in the U.S., we examine the association between the types and patterns of knowledge-seeking ties and individual auditor performance. Our initial finding is that auditor job performance is negatively associated with the number of knowledge-seeking ties. Further, our analyses demonstrate that this negative association is being driven by explicit knowledge-seeking rather than tacit knowledge-seeking activities and is stronger for higher-ranked auditors. Thus, knowledge-seeking by auditors may come …

Taxing The Disposition Effect: The Impact Of Tax Awareness On Investor Behavior, William Bazley, Jordan Moore, Melina Murren Vosee Jan 2021

Taxing The Disposition Effect: The Impact Of Tax Awareness On Investor Behavior, William Bazley, Jordan Moore, Melina Murren Vosee

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Standard portfolio choice models predict that investors consider the tax implications of trading. However, individuals are disposed toward realizing gains and holding losing investments, behaviors that worsen their performance. We show, in an experimental market, that increasing tax salience reduces the disposition effect between 22% and 47%, leading to higher portfolio balances without increasing total trading activity. Using field data, we find that investors' disposition is sensitive to taxes around tax rate changes, when taxes are likely salient. Our analysis demonstrates that increasing tax awareness can affect households' portfolio choices, which suggests policy implications for improving financial decision-making.

Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)

This study aims to investigate and compare the congruent and incongruent perceptions of managers and frontline employees toward employee retention in Hong Kong travel agencies. An integrated model was developed using data from 32 interviews with 16 manager– employee dyads. Findings categorized stabilizing and destabilizing factors of job change into four themes: job nature, industry factors, organizational factors, and personal factors. Key factors influencing employee turnover include high customer contact, anti-social working hours, working environment, office location, supervisor and co-worker relations, remuneration, and career prospect. We conclude by reviewing the theoretical and practical implications for travel trade industry management with …

Proposing A Higher Model: Stewardly Leadership, Leslie J Sam Helgerson Jan 2021

Proposing A Higher Model: Stewardly Leadership, Leslie J Sam Helgerson

Graduate School Faculty Publications

This paper introduces Stewardly Leadership and provides an overview of Democratic, Collaborative, and Servant Leadership, and then argues that the lack of ultimate accountability is a key vulnerability in those models. It goes on to demonstrate how a robust view of stewardship responsibility can help the Christian leader to avoid those risks. It then examines the four elements of stewardly leadership—that leaders are endowed, equipped, entrusted, and held accountable—and shows how these can foster the flourishing of individuals, organization, and society in general, not only for leaders but for all those they serve, for the greater good.

Hybrid Models As Transdisciplinary Research Enablers, Andreas Tolk, Alison Harper, Navonil Mustafee

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Modelling and simulation (M&S) techniques are frequently used in Operations Research (OR) to aid decision-making. With growing complexity of systems to be modelled, an increasing number of studies now apply multiple M&S techniques or hybrid simulation (HS) to represent the underlying system of interest. A parallel but related theme of research is extending the HS approach to include the development of hybrid models (HM). HM extends the M&S discipline by combining theories, methods and tools from across disciplines and applying multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary solutions to practice. In the broader OR literature, there are numerous examples of cross-disciplinary approaches in …

The Effect Of Professional Identity Salience And Leadership Climate On Accountants' Ethical Decisions, Yin Xu, Karl J. Wang, Doug Ziegenfuss

Accounting Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of contextual factors in organizations on accountants’ ethical decisions. Specifically, the study investigated whether professional identity salience and ethical leadership climate affected accountants’ ethical judgments and intentions to act more ethically. A study is conducted, in a 2 x 2 between-factorial design, by using certified public accountants (N=375) as participants. The findings show that accountants made more ethical judgments when professional identity salience was increased by highlighting the professional code of ethics. Accountants intended to act more ethically only when the leadership climate was positive. The results suggest that a …

Innovation Capacity: A Firm Level Response To Subsidy Activity In A National Setting, Assyad Al-Wreiket, Royce D. Burnett, Christopher J. Skousen, Ouadie Akaaboune

Accounting Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect subsidies have on firm-level innovation across Eastern European and Central Asian countries and to assess if these effects move to increase firm-level capability. Specifically, we investigate the extent subsidy programs act to shape and guide firm-level innovative capabilities and how the presence of such capabilities affect operational performance. We employ a Probit model to investigate firm-level innovation and OLS regression to assess how subsidies, in association with the decision to adopt foreign technology and in-house research and development (R&D) affect firm productive capacity. Results suggest subsidies promote innovation and that …

Drawing on current leadership paradigms, we review human-robot collaboration studies from four academic disciplines with a history of publishing such work …

Economic Development Effects Of Major And Minor League Teams And Stadia, Nola Agha, Daniel A. Rascher Jan 2021

Economic Development Effects Of Major And Minor League Teams And Stadia, Nola Agha, Daniel A. Rascher

Sport Management

Professional teams and leagues claim new stadiums lead to economic development. To test this, we utilize data from the Census Bureau on net establishment and employment changes across 871 Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas from 2004 to 2012. Difference-in-differences and panel data techniques allow for a cross-sectional and time series comparison for both teams and new stadia in both professional and development leagues. Nearly all results from hundreds of models are insignificantly different from zero. Results from between- and random-effects models suggest that teams move into markets that already have higher employment and establishment growth. (JEL R58, H71, L83, Z28)

Drivers And Consequences Of Sustainability Committee Existence? Evidence From The Hospitality And Tourism Industry, Merve Kilic, Ali Uyar, Cemil Kuzey, Abdullah S. Karaman

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This study ’ s objective is twofold: (1) to investigate whether board characteristics predict the existence of a sustainability committee, and (2) to examine whether the establishment of sustainability committees stimulates sustainability reporting, external assurance, and the adoption of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework in hospitality and tourism (H & T) firms. For this purpose, the data was derived from the Thomson Reuters Eikon database for publicly traded H & T firms from 2013 to 2018. The results indicate that while board size is a sig- nificant predictor of sustainability committee establishment, female and independent directors are not. Furthermore, …
