What is coaching?

There is no single universally recognized definition of coaching. In the context of the workplace, common elements of coaching definitions include a one-on-one systematic relationship, learning, behavioral change, self-awareness, and improved performance (Grover & Furnham, 2016). Some notable differences in definitions include who receives the coaching, who conducts the coaching, the type of behavior change that is targeted, and the nature of the coaching behaviors. For example, several definitions focus more exclusively on top leaders receiving coaching from external, professional coaches (e.g., Kilburg, 1996); known more commonly as executive coaching, this was a common arrangement when workplace …

Research Summary

Network centrality is an important determinant of alliance performance. However, estimating how each alliance member's centrality affects alliance performance is challenging because the end market might value each partner's contribution differently. We solve this empirical question with a two‐sided matching model that accounts for the partners' endogenous selection and estimates the effect of each side's centrality and input quality on performance. We implement the method in the novel context of the Thoroughbred horse industry, in foal‐sharing alliances between buyers and suppliers. 2021-March-03-Etsu Adds New Nutrition Minor, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

JOHNSON CITY (March 3, 2021) –  East Tennessee State University will offer a minor in Nutrition beginning fall 2021 in order to meet a growing demand in the health care workforce and among its students.

The new minor will be housed in the ETSU College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences (CCRHS). To complete the minor, students will take 18 credit hours with courses addressing topics such as community nutrition, nutrition in sports and health, communication in nutrition, and others.

Commercial space transportation is becoming more affordable and accessible. Consequently, we expect to see significant expansion of commercial space launch activities in the coming decade. As space vehicles travel through airspace during the launch and re-entry stages, they potentially disrupt the regular operations of traditional users. This paper estimates the potential economic and operational impacts of commercial space horizontal launch activities on airlines under various launch scenarios using predictive fast-time simulation modeling, focusing on Cecil Air and Space Port in Jacksonville (Florida) and the rules governing the national airspace system (NAS) in the United States. JOHNSON CITY (March 2, 2021) – A French Spring Cooking Course taught by Chef Sheridan is offered this spring by East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development.

Sheridan Nice will teach this course virtually. Recipes will be provided, so participants may cook along with her, or simply enjoy her show.

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Prior research indicates that managers’ dark personality traits increase their tendency to engage in disruptive and unethical organizational behaviors including accounting earnings management. Other research suggests that the prevalence of dark personalities in management may represent an accidental byproduct of selecting managers with accompanying desirable attributes that fit the stereotype of a “strong leader.” Our paper posits that organizations may hire some managers who have dark personality traits because their willingness to push ethical boundaries aligns with organizational objectives, particularly in the accounting context where ethical considerations are especially important. Dispelling The Hype: An Examination Of Spac Common Equity Performance, Lauren Helen Chamberlain

Economics

The U.S. SPAC market has faced explosive growth in recent years, but the financial performance of these investments is weakly understood. Therefore, this paper contributes an analysis on the long-term performance of SPAC common equity for SPACs that completed acquisitions between 2016 and 2018. Using hand-collected data from the Compustat – Capital IQ and SEC EDGAR databases, this paper runs a two-sample t-test assuming unequal variances and constructs an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model. Initial 2020 Employment Impacts Of Covid-19 On Northern California, Center For Business And Policy Research

The COVID-19 pandemic has had very different impacts on employment across the sub-regions of the Northern California Megaregion (NCMR). This report analyzes those differences through the first six months of the pandemic using a high-quality dataset based on employer tax filings and provides a more accurate picture than early estimates based on surveys and unemployment insurance claims. The data shows the North San Joaquin Valley (NSJV) has been the most resistant to job loss in the first six months of the pandemic, while the North Bay area and San Francisco have experienced the highest level of job loss.

Economics Faculty Working Papers

This paper examines the moderating influence of home country ethnic diversity in the relationship between migrant remittances and new business creation in developing countries. By employing the theories of transaction cost, social network, social identity, and trust, we argue that ethnic diversity is negatively associated with new business creation; nevertheless, it strengthens the positive association between migrant remittances and new business creation in developing countries. We test our hypotheses on 64 developing countries over an 11-year period (2006-2016). Although there is an established literature regarding brand transgressions, Covid-19 has highlighted the need to better understand exogenously created brand crises. We introduce, define, and distinguish between two types of crises that emanate from exogenous, offending brands and the broader marketplace—brand infection and brand contamination. We further present future research ideas that can provide insights into the prevention, mitigation, and recovery strategies that firms can employ to address exogenously created brand crises.

The Customer Satisfaction Index of Singapore (CSISG) computes customer satisfaction scores at the national, sector, sub-sector, and company levels. The CSISG serves as a quantitative benchmark of the quality of goods and services produced by the Singapore economy over time and across countries. The fourth quarter results mark the end of measurement for CSISG 2020. Singapore’s 2020 national score was computed using the data collected during these four quarters.
