Stopover Destination Loyalty: The Influence Of Perceived Ambience And Sensation Seeking Tendency, Di Wang, Filareti Kotsi, Steven Pike, Jun Yao Jun 2021

Stopover Destination Loyalty: The Influence Of Perceived Ambience And Sensation Seeking Tendency, Di Wang, Filareti Kotsi, Steven Pike, Jun Yao

All Works

This paper examines the influence of sensation seeking and perceived ambience on attitudinal loyalty towards two traditional stopover destinations (Singapore, Hong Kong) and two emerging stopover destinations (Dubai, Abu Dhabi). A quasi-experimental design with two separate samples of participants shows that travelers’ perceived positive ambience and attitudinal destination loyalty was higher for the traditional stopover destinations than for the emerging destinations. In addition, sensation seeking tendency moderates the effect such that travelers with lower sensation seeking tendencies have higher attitudinal loyalty towards the traditional stopover destinations while the effect is mitigated for those with higher sensation seeking tendencies. This paper …

Light At The End Of The Tunnel: Visitors' Virtual Reality (Versus In-Person) Attraction Site Tour-Related Behavioral Intentions During And Post-Covid-19, Omar S. Itani, Linda D. Hollebeek Jun 2021

Light At The End Of The Tunnel: Visitors' Virtual Reality (Versus In-Person) Attraction Site Tour-Related Behavioral Intentions During And Post-Covid-19, Omar S. Itani, Linda D. Hollebeek

Marketing Faculty Publications

Consumer behavior is changing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, thus compelling attraction sites to find new ways of offering safe tours to visitors. Based on protection motivation theory, we develop and test a model that examines key drivers of visitors' COVID-19-induced social distancing behavior and its effect on their intent to use virtual reality-based (vs. in-person) attraction site tours during and post-COVID-19. Our analyses demonstrate that visitor-perceived threat severity, response efficacy, and self-efficacy raise social distancing behavior. In turn, social distancing increases (decreases) visitors' intent to use virtual reality (in-person) tours during the pandemic. We find social …

Capital Formation And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Re-Examination, Emmanuel Ating Onwiodiokit Ph.D, Gabriel Efe Otolorin

Bullion

This study re-examines the impact of capital formation on Nigeria's economic growth. The paper adopts the Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) technique on annual time series data covering the period 1981 to 2018. Infrastructure, health and skills competitiveness indices computed from the global competitiveness reports were adapted to capture key specifics of physical and human capital formation. The results from the DOLS show that gross fixed capital formation had a negative and significant impact on economic growth. The results also indicate that external debt and total labour force had a negative effect on economic growth. On the other hand, human …

Entrepreneurial Orientation In Supply Chain Management: A Systematic Review, Andrés Felipe Cortés, Younggeun Lee, Juan David Cortes, Isidro Liñan

WCBT Faculty Publications

Companies around the world need to reconcile the need to differentiate their offerings and remain entrepreneurial in a competitive environment while also running extremely efficient and effective operations. Surprisingly, however, limited studies have provided a synthesis and overview of existing research exploring important links between the entrepreneurship and supply chain management (SCM) fields. In this paper, we aim to address this issue by developing a systematic review of research exploring the link between entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and SCM, while synthesizing the most relevant findings in this intersection. We also aim to promote the development of this topic by providing relevant …

Female Directors: Why Are Some Less Informed Than Others?, S. Mobbs, Y. Tan, Shage Zhang Jun 2021

Female Directors: Why Are Some Less Informed Than Others?, S. Mobbs, Y. Tan, Shage Zhang

School of Business Faculty Research

We find the limited supply of female directors, rather than gender differences or boardroom biases, can create an informational disadvantage for some female independent directors, as measured by their open market trading profits. The information disparity is largely isolated to firms with abnormally low representation by female directors. Female independent directors who are located further away from the company's headquarters, have less industry experience or have shorter tenure exhibit the most limited information access. Accounting for these obstacles reduces the gender disparity in information. We further find that this information disparity among female independent directors contributes to the variation in …

Toward A Doctrine Of Socially Responsible Marketing (Srm): A Macro And Normative-Ethical Perspective, Gene R. Laczniak, Clifford Schultz

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In this conceptual article, the authors use a macro-level analysis and normative ethical theory to delineate and to explicate a doctrine of socially responsible marketing (SRM). Applying a theory-in-formation approach, we postulate a literature-informed definition of SRM. We discuss why a macro and normative-ethical rather than a micro and positive-descriptive perspective is essential to justifying the elements of SRM. We explore and explain why the roots of an authentic doctrine of SRM can be discerned from the literatures of marketing history, corporate social responsibility, institutional economics and moral philosophy. In so doing, the mandate to engage in socially responsible marketing …

Corporate Social Responsibility And Information Flow, Gary Chen, Bin Wang, Xiaohong Wang Jun 2021

Corporate Social Responsibility And Information Flow, Gary Chen, Bin Wang, Xiaohong Wang

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

We find that a firm's greater commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) increases firm- specific information incorporated into stock prices. We further show that information searches increase around major disclosure events for firms that are more socially responsible, as observed through requests for newly released annual (10-K) filings on EDGAR and company ticker searches on Google around earnings announcements. Using alternative empirical specifications, we establish a robust and positive relation between CSR and stock price informativeness. Our results are consistent with the ethical and reputational view that a commitment to CSR encourages information acquisition and facilitates information flow into stock …

An Organization’S Ability To Improve Outsourcing Outcomes In Information Technology Outsourcing Initiatives By Increasing Organizational Knowledge: A Case Study, John Michael Mello

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem addressed in this study was the literature gap regarding how internal organizational knowledge can be increased effectively within outsourcing projects. The study was a qualitative social constructionist case study composed of senior technology leaders. The purpose this study addressed was to understand the current structure of technical outsourcing contracts and how future contracts could be structured to address the problem of this study. The research incorporated how a reconceptualized absorptive capacity model, sociocognitive theory, and digital leadership mindsets could improve knowledge transfer outcomes between a vendor and client. Research shows that increasing an organization’s knowledge during an outsourcing …

Inter-Organizational Systems Use And Supply Chain Performance: Mediating Role Of Supply Chain Management Capabilities, David Asamoah, B. Agyei-Owusu, Francis Andoh-Baidoo, Emmanuel Wusuhon Yanibo Ayaburi

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Inter-organizational Systems (IOS) are network-enabled information systems that extend boundaries of an organization. There is a growing interest among researchers and practitioners to understand how the use of IOS enhances firm performance. In this study, we examine how IOS use impacts an organization’s supply chain management (SCM) capabilities and supply chain performance. Drawing on the resource-based view theory, we examine two mechanisms that are essential for enhanced supply chain performance: (a) efficient IOS external utilization regarding its networked partners and (b) the maximization of IOS organizational management capabilities in supply chain management. Using data from 193 respondents from various manufacturers …

Viasat has installed the Quuppa indoor real-time locating system (RTLS), which it uses to track the real-time position of high-value work-in-process items. In its current state, the system only displays in-the-moment location information, with no available functionality for storing historical data for review, analysis, or visualization. In addition, the data displayed is noisy and prone to significant random error. This paper provides an overview of RTLS methods and technologies, assesses alternative solutions to Viasat’s issue, demonstrates our RTLS integrated web app solution, analyzes its impact, and …

Machine Learning-Based Prediction Models For Patients No-Show In Online Outpatient Appointments, Guorui Fan, Zhaohua Deng, Qing Ye, Bin Wang

Information Systems Faculty Publications

With the development of information and communication technologies, all public tertiary hospitals in China began to use online outpatient appointment systems. However, the phenomenon of patient no-shows in online outpatient appointments is becoming more serious. The objective of this study is to design a prediction model for patient no-shows, thereby assisting hospitals in making relevant decisions, and reducing the probability of patient no-show behavior. We used 382,004 original online outpatient appointment records, and divided the data set into a training set (N1 = 286,503), and a validation set (N2 = 95,501). We used machine learning algorithms such as logistic …

Natural ice was an important maritime cargo throughout the 19th and 20th century with Norway being the largest European ice exporting nation in Europe. This trade was mainly operated with small to medium size wooden sailing vessels and often secured long time survival of these craft. Although it is not known if any of today's historic sailing ships operating in European waters, has ever actually transported natural ice, this trade among others contributed to the survival of the fleet. While today ice is mainly considered as an obstacle for the operation of historic watercraft, it was actually one of the …

The Pricing Of Initial Public Offering And Market Efficiency, Chiyachantana N. Chiraphol Jun 2021

The Pricing Of Initial Public Offering And Market Efficiency, Chiyachantana N. Chiraphol

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigates long-run performance of Thai initial public offerings (IPOs). To examine the longrun performance of Thai IPOs, we compute buy-and-hold abnormal returns and cumulative abnormal returns for two years after the IPOs. We find strong evidence of long run underpricing in Thai market. Specifically, the average buy-and-hold abnormal returns and cumulative abnormal returns are 64.5% and 18.4% respectively. However, our multi-variate analysis does not indicate a strong relation between long-run underperformance and firm-specific factors, such as firm size, firm age, investment banker reputation and firm profitability.

Multi-Period Lot-Sizing With Supplier Selection: Structural Results, Complexity And Algorithms, Meichun Lin, Woonghee Tim Huh, Guohua Wan Jun 2021

Multi-Period Lot-Sizing With Supplier Selection: Structural Results, Complexity And Algorithms, Meichun Lin, Woonghee Tim Huh, Guohua Wan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We consider a multi-period lot-sizing problem with multiple products and multiple suppliers. Demand is deterministic and time-varying. The objective is to determine order quantities to minimize the total cost over a finite planning horizon. This problem is strongly NP-hard. For a special case, we extend the classical zero-inventory-ordering principle and solve it by dynamic programming. Based on this new extension, we also develop a heuristic algorithm for the general problem and computationally show that it works well.

Outsourcing Vdc Workflows, Kyle K. Bresnahan Jun 2021

Outsourcing Vdc Workflows, Kyle K. Bresnahan

Construction Management

In an increasingly demanding world for infrastructure, technological methods have been found to assist construction project's. As innovative construction methods are constantly increasing, so is the demand for technological needs within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. To ensure technological adoption, many countries have started to mandate higher levels of building information modeling (BIM) documentation beyond the 2D construction documents traditionally required throughout construction review and permitting. Some companies have capitalized on this change to the extent of making BIM their primary business. These companies focus solely on virtual design and construction (VDC) and determine whether clients lacking this …

Generalist Versus Specialist Ceos And Acquisitions: Two-Sided Matching And The Impact Of Ceo Characteristics On Firm Outcomes, Guoli Chen, Sterling Huang, Philipp Meyer-Doyle Jun 2021

Generalist Versus Specialist Ceos And Acquisitions: Two-Sided Matching And The Impact Of Ceo Characteristics On Firm Outcomes, Guoli Chen, Sterling Huang, Philipp Meyer-Doyle

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Research Summary: To address endogeneity concerns stemming from firm-CEO matching, we deploy a two-sided matching model that identifies the complementarities arising from the CEO-firm match and subsequently account for these complementarities in empirical tests. Applying this approach, we examine how the nature of CEOs' human capital affects the acquisition behavior and performance of firms. We find that generalist CEOs (CEOs with a broader set of knowledge and skills) are more likely to engage in unrelated acquisitions than specialist CEOs (CEOs with a narrower but deeper set of knowledge and skills). We also find that the fit between the nature of …

Analyst Teams, Bingxu Fang, Ole-Kristian Hope

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper examines the impact of teamwork on sell-side analysts’ performance. Using a hand-collected sample of over 50,000 analyst research reports, we find that analyst teams issue more than 70% of annual earnings forecasts. In contrast, most prior research implicitly assumes that forecasts are issued by individual analysts. We document that analyst teams generate more accurate earnings forecasts than individual analysts and that the stock market reacts more strongly to forecast revisions issued by teams. Analyst teams also cover more firms, issue earnings forecasts more frequently, and issue less stale forecasts. Analysts working in teams are more likely to be …

Labor Market Mobility And Expectation Management: Evidence From Enforceability Of Noncompete Provisions, Michael Tang, Rencheng Wang, Yi Zhou Jun 2021

Labor Market Mobility And Expectation Management: Evidence From Enforceability Of Noncompete Provisions, Michael Tang, Rencheng Wang, Yi Zhou

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines how managers' use of expectation management is affected by their labor market mobility, which we measure by the enforceability of noncompete provisions in their employment contracts. Exploiting quasinatural experiments, our difference-in-differences analyses provide new causal insights to the growing literature on how managers' career concerns affect their disclosure choices. Consistent with a less mobile labor market imposing more pressure on managers to achieve earnings expectations, we predict and find that managers in US states that tightened enforcement of noncompete provisions are more likely to manage analyst expectations downward. We also find that downward expectation management is used …
