As a student in East Tennessee State University’s Department of Computing, Andrew McDonald understands what it takes to find employment.

A quality internship, he said, is “probably the biggest factor if a cybersecurity student wants to score a job right after graduating.”

McDonald is in a good place.

For months, McDonald interned – and now works part time – with Core4ce, a federal contractor based in Northern Virginia that provides cybersecurity services and solutions to customers including the United States Department of Defense.

The warm, sunny and dry weather has been especially favorable for vibrant fall color.

That’s the latest report from Travis Watson, campus arborist at East Tennessee State University.

“The drier weather has provided lots of sunshine during the day for sugar production and the cool nights combined with shortening daylight hours have set the wheels in motion for change,” said Watson. “As long as we continue to see some sporadic rainfall, conditions are near ideal.”

In 1985, law enforcement officials arrested Anthony Ray Hinton for the murder of two fast food managers in Birmingham, Alabama. Until 2015, Hinton was behind bars.

There was one catch: Hinton didn’t actually commit the crimes.

“A virulent brew of racism, prosecutorial misconduct, poverty and cruel indifference to the innocence of this man led to his incarceration,” said Dr. Daryl Carter, professor of history, associate dean for community relations and outreach and director of the Black American Studies Program at ETSU.

Hinton is coming to ETSU next week to share his story.

A top natural products research scientist from Colombia visited East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy last week to meet with student pharmacists and help demonstrate the drug discovery process.
 
Dr. Ruben Torrenegra, who was recognized in 2018 by the government of Colombia as one of its top scientists, has helped make possible the college’s drug discovery program since 2008 when he partnered with Dr. Victoria Palau, Professor Emerita of Pharmaceutical Sciences, who started her cancer research with plants when she came to ETSU in 2007.

Nearly 100 people took their oath of citizenship in front of a large crowd of guests and friends on Friday, Sept. 29. The Honorable J. Ronnie Greer, U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Tennessee and a graduate of ETSU, presided over the ceremony.

This marked the second time that ETSU hosted a naturalization ceremony after becoming the first higher education institution in East Tennessee to host one in 2018.

Following their oath of allegiance, the new U.S. citizens received certificates of citizenship, as well as American flags from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The ability to certify systems driven by neural networks is crucial for future rollouts of machine learning technologies in aerospace applications. In this study, the neural networks are used to represent a fuel-optimal feedback controller for two different 3-degree-of-freedom pinpoint landing problems. It is shown that the standard sum-ofsquares Lyapunov candidate is too restrictive to assess the stability of systems with fuel-optimal control profiles. Instead, a parametric Lyapunov candidate (i.e. a neural network) can be trained to sufficiently evaluate the closed-loop stability of fuel-optimal control profiles. Then, a stability-constrained imitation learning method is applied, which simultaneously trains a neural network …

We examine the effects of local newspapers on firms’ information environments. With newspaper employment dropping precipitously in the last few decades, we posit that these changes will harm local firms’ information environments. Consistent with local news improving information environments, we find that volatility, spreads, and illiquidity increase as local newspaper intensity declines and that this is associated with firms’ importance in their local economy. We further find that for firms that are more important in their community, or have busy analysts, less local newspaper intensity is associated with significantly lower analyst accuracy and higher forecast dispersion. This article introduces the eigensystem autoregression (EAR) framework, which allows an AR model to be specified, estimated, and applied directly in terms of its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. An EAR estimation can therefore impose various constraints on AR dynamics that would not be possible within standard linear estimation. Examples are restricting eigenvalue magnitudes to control the rate of mean reversion, additionally imposing that eigenvalues be real and positive to avoid pronounced oscillatory behavior, and eliminating the possibility of explosive episodes in a time-varying AR. The EAR framework also produces closed-form AR forecasts and associated variances, and forecasts and data may be …

Research suggests that mystery products can be appealing to consumers and can motivate interest and purchase. In this paper, we examine a different benefit of these offerings – their effect on driving conversation. We propose that such products can prompt a conversation due to their ability to motivate joint speculation, or the process of thinking about possible resolutions of the uncertainty with others. We define this novel driver of conversation, delineate it from related constructs, and situate it in the literature. We then provide initial evidence for the proposed theory in seven studies (n = 2,835), demonstrating that mystery …

Does An Accounting Internship Impact Cpa Exam Performance?, Xiaochuan Zheng, A. Can Inci

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

We examined whether an accounting internship influences CPA exam performance. Using 2005–2013 candidate data, we found that an internship is significantly related to CPA exam performance in the Auditing (AUD) section. We speculate that the internship’s observed positive effect for the AUD section and the lack of effect for the other three sections is because the audit section more closely reflects knowledge/skills acquired by interns than the other three exam sections. These results have implications for academics and candidates seeking to improve CPA exam performance. Our study also provides information for those considering incorporating an accounting internship into the curriculum.

This research paper aims to understand the presence of sustainable food waste management in food retail businesses, as well as the importance of food donation to the success of food insecurity remediation organizations in the city of Melbourne, Victoria. Intensive in-person, online, and over-the-phone interviews were conducted in two categories: food retail businesses (subcategories being supermarkets and restaurants) and food insecurity remediation organizations. Of the 133 businesses contacted, 16 food service businesses were interviewed, and three food insecurity remediation organizations were interviewed.
