Introductory Economics: Gender, Majors, And Future Performance, Natsuki Arai, Shian Chang, Biing-Shen Kuo

By investigating the exam scores of introductory economics classes in the business school at National Chengchi University in Taiwan between 2008 and 2019, we find three sets of results: First, we find no significant difference between genders in the exam scores. Second, students’ majors are significantly associated with their exam scores, which likely reflects their academic ability measured at college admission. Third, the exam scores are strong predictors of students’ future academic performance.

This report is a study of the challenges facing persons with disabilities who want to start a business in Ireland. It profiles the community and identifies the distinctive barriers to entrepreneurship that persons with disabilities endure. The report concludes by offering a series of recommendations regarding what actions should be taken to improve the pathway to entrepreneurship for persons with disabilities in Ireland.

In this paper, we explore the relationship between the culture of the country where a multinational corporation (MNC) is headquartered and the MNC's stock market reaction to tax avoidance regulations. Specifically, we examine the different responses of MNCs following the implementation of the 2010 UK reform that restricted profit shifting for a specific group of firms. We find that, in countries with short-term-oriented cultures, MNCs affected by this reform experienced positive stock market responses relative to their unaffected counterparts. This is not found in long-term-oriented cultures. This difference in response can partly be explained by the differing perceptions of the …

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator-Nebraska rose by 0.58% in January 2024. The increase in the leading indicator, which is designed to predict economic growth six months into the future, suggests that the Nebraska economy will grow through mid-2024. Two components of the leading indicator improved during January. To begin with, respondents to the January Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase sales and employment over the next six months. Further, the Nebraska labor market improved. Initial claims for unemployment insurance fell during January, suggesting that employers see sufficient demand to support their current workforce.

“Together We Go Far”: Exploring The Motivational Dispositions Within Connected Fitness, Melissa Davies, Thomas Aicher, Brianna Newland, Eric Hungenberg

This study examined the motivational profiles of connected fitness users to better position brands as they compete with the reopening of physical gyms and in-person classes. Using survey responses from 663 Peloton users, a K-cluster analysis was performed to identify three clusters of Peloton users (Wellness, Physique, and Social Performance), based on their motives for using the brand’s app. Findings suggest that connected fitness brands should leverage their ability to create social engagement and challenging opportunities to better their own past performance to differentiate themselves and retain users in a very cluttered and competitive marketplace.

This study examines factors impacting sport attendance at non-conference NCAA Division I men’s college basketball games. Non-conference college basketball games are relatively unique because athletic department personnel control many of the scheduling variables related to event popularity, including opponent, game day, and start time. As such, it is valuable for administrators to know which elements might maximize event revenue. The current study is also unique because it examines both reported attendance (tickets disseminated) and actual attendance (tickets scanned at the venue). As the sport of soccer continues to grow throughout the world – and particularly into North America – the current study assessed the causal effect fans’ sensory traditions have on co-creation. Data were collected by intercepting Portugese and Spanish soccer attendees outside of the stadium prior to the match’s start. A total of 282 useable surveys were retrieved from fans during the 2022-23 seasons. Path modeling results indicate that traditions relating to aesthetics, sound, and beverage provided the greatest means to co-create experiences for attendees. Diversification as a strategic objective has become increasingly pursued by many enterprises. However, whether diversification truly brings robust business operations and risk dispersion effects remains a focal point of attention in both academic and practical realms. This study, grounded in Chinese practice, empirically examines the relationship between corporate diversification and financial distress and further discusses the interactive impact of monetary policy tightening and diversification on corporate financial distress.

Among all the sectors, the hospitality and tourism sector has been detrimentally affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This research aimed to determine how changes have been experienced specifically in the Turkish tourism higher education and tourism sector. As the need for Green Workforce jobs rises, it is essential that companies are transparent about pay. The California Pay Transparency Law (SB 1162) enforces job descriptions that explicitly outline employee compensation, which is also a step towards closing gender and race-based pay gaps. It also prohibits employers from using hiring practices that may be discriminatory against certain groups of people. SB 1162 builds honesty, trust, and equity in the workplace for job seekers today and for generations to come.

This thesis explores the integration of Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models and technical analysis to forecast stock prices, with a focus on Coca-Cola's (KO) and Netflix’s (NFLX) stocks. It examines the effectiveness of combining ARIMA models, known for their predictive accuracy in time-series analysis, with technical indicators, particularly moving averages. This thesis investigates the USMEPCOM’s issue of modeling and engineering Business Intelligence data centralized around the MEPS of Excellence (MOE) program. MEPS around the US conduct military personnel in-processing and in doing so have a vested interest in the standardization and application of the data associated with such processes. There are currently 65 MEPS stations and one RPS that handle military personnel onboarding paperwork and make determinations for military eligibility. This topic is important due to the MEPS cloud data processing system modernization efforts requiring data processing adaptation to ensure relevant and meaningful usage of current data.

This thesis provides 3 contributions to the literature of semiconductor industry industrial policy. The thesis (1) provides a historical overview of industrial policy within the U.S. semiconductor industry, (2) measures semiconductor public-private partnership (PPP) participation and (3) measures firm functions’ impact on firm level performance. PPP participation data was gathered from a sample of 10 semiconductor PPPs.
