There has been a growing shift towards modern performance management systems from traditional ones. However, there is limited empirical evidence comparing the effectiveness of traditional and modern performance management systems. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate and compare the role of traditional and modern performance management systems. An interview survey was conducted among 10 employees in organizations that utilized both types of systems. The findings suggest that conventional performance management focuses on providing incentives, promotions, and punishment rather than encouraging and supporting employees, and this affects the employees' ability to receive continuous feedback. In this paper, we explore the potential economic impacts associated with a major hurricane making landfall in Hampton Roads. We estimate the direct damages from a Florence-like Category 3 hurricane with a 3.6 feet tidal offset are estimated at $15.6 billion, equivalent to 10% of the 2022 regional GDP. If we apply existing flood insurance rates to these projected damages, we estimate that the total economic impact would exceed $12 billion with a short-term loss of more than 76,000 jobs. The United States is one of the major seafood product importers in the world. Despite the increases in global seafood and aquaculture consumption over the past decades, there is limited information on the trade dynamics of this sector. To address this gap, this study uses an augmented gravity model to evaluate the factors that have influenced catfish and trout imports into the United States. The analysis was conducted using the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimator to address issues of heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, and zero trade flows. Are Fairness Perceptions Related To Moral Licensing Behavior? Evidence From Tax Compliance, Donna Bobek, Amy Hageman, Cass Hausserman

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study investigates how the presence, and subsequent repeal, of a tax incentive for a prosocial behavior influences fairness perceptions and tax compliance for those who are and are not eligible for the incentive. Results of a multi-round experiment with 309 U.S. taxpayers show that individuals who engage in the prosocial behavior of making a charitable donation do not exhibit moral licensing behavior. Instead, those who give, versus do not give, engage in higher levels of tax compliance. In fact, we even observe consistency for those with the most motivation to morally license—those who donate to charity but also perceive …

We examine how social movement organizations (SMOs), particularly third-party rating agencies, can catalyze rapid shifts in social norms among an organizational population. We propose that rating agencies can instigate new social norms by defining appropriate and acceptable standards of performance that prompt organizations to realign their behaviors to mirror these new standards, thereby accelerating changes in shared understandings regarding appropriate firm behavior. What drives entrepreneurial activity and new venture creation? Common explanations within the entrepreneurship literature include the degree of available resources, the cultural inclinations of the society, and the institutional environment in which the activity occurs. Despite continued interest in this area of research, empirical findings remain largely inconclusive. Moreover, relatively few studies have empirically examined the various determinants concomitantly. Relying on panel data from 79 countries, we examine the asymmetrical impact of resources, culture, and institutions on both formal and informal entrepreneurial ventures. The =LAMBDA function within Excel provides a powerful new tool for investors and analysts. In this treatment, we demonstrate =LAMBDA functions that calculate an option’s intrinsic value, price, and Greeks based on the Black-Scholes model. We additionally construct an =ALLGREEKS function within Excel’s built-in =MAKEARRAY function that quickly produces option prices and Greeks given six parameters: the underlying spot price (S), strike price (X), annual return volatility (V), days to maturity (DTM), days in a year (DIY), and the annual risk-free rate (RF). This study examines experienced hoteliers' perspectives on essential operational practices for delivering consistent, high-quality customer experiences, focusing on operational differences between Chinese State-Owned Hotels (SOHs) and International Branded Hotels (IBHs) in China. Through semi-structured interviews with 24 experienced hoteliers from SOHs and IBHs, the research identifies operational practices in IBHs that are perceived as more effective than those in SOHs. Seeing the whole across diverse stakeholders is challenging for participants in complex systems, yet doing so is essential for engaging effectively in systems change. This study aims to investigate the effects of tourist engagement dimensions on revisit and Word of Mouth (WOM) intentions of heritage tourists. The data were collected from domestic tourists in the heritage city of Kashan, Iran. To analyse the collected data, this study applies Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) as a symmetric analysis technique, as well as fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) as an asymmetric analysis approach to strengthen the findings. Building on past research on tour guides and guiding, this paper provides an in-depth examination of the safety management role of tour guides leading adventure trips. A review of previous literature identifies broad dimensions of tour guiding and, within these dimensions, specific guiding roles mainly in relation to communication. The current study’s qualitative examination of experienced Arctic guides, however, illustrates how environmental conditions contribute to near misses and points to safety management as an adventure guide’s fundamental role.
