The Fench Writers In The Seventeenth Century: The Literary Works Of Corneille Converted And Stabilized The French Language, Bernard Raphael

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1932, argues that the literary work of Pierre Corneille converted and stabilized the French language during the seventeenth century. It surveys the major literary institutions and figures shaping French letters during this period, including the Salon de Rambouillet and its role in refining literary taste, and the founding of the French Academy under Richelieu and its work compiling the French dictionary. Corneille's development of French classical tragedy is examined in detail, particularly through "Le Cid," with attention to his treatment of the …

In this thesis I propose by a study of the works and life of Rene Bazin to present him as representative in the movement against the tenets of Naturalism, that is, to present Rene Bazin as an anti-naturalist. The method that I used was to examine the novels of Bazin, to read criticisms of his theory and that of the Naturalists, particularly of Zola and the Goncourts.

When so much has been written about Maistre Francois Villon, the Poet of the fifteenth century, the question arises: why another essay on this subject? Why attempt to repeat Longnon, Payne, and Lewis? Most of what has been written, however, has centralized about Villon as a rogue and a genius at the many taverns of medieval Paris.
