Swiss by birth and in his ethical attitude, German by training and in his emotions as well as in his philosophy, French by unofficial adoption and in his intellectual curiosity, Edouard Rod occupied an unusual place among the novelists of his generation. An inherited tendency toward melancholy, a sad and lonely childhood, and his introduction to the philosophy of Schopenhauer, enabled him to analyze successfully the pessimism of his period and laid the foundation for the doctrine of despair which constitutes one of the most constant factors in his work. Euripides, the youngest of the tragic poets, was born in 485 B.C. and died in 406. The span of his life coincides with the most triumphant period of Athenian history. His father was names Mnesarchides, his mother Kleito. They were apparently of wealth, for Euripides had considerable property and was "Proxenum" or consul of Magnesia. Another indication of wealth is the fact that Euripides was the possessor of a library, something especially rare then.

In 1931 a committee was appointed by the French section of the Association of Modern Language Teachers of the Central West and South to undertake the task of securing a basic French vocabulary list which was to be designed to meet the teaching needs of American schools and which, it was hoped, would become basic for the construction of elementary textbooks and of tests and for the editing of graded reading texts. The list, containing 2753 items, was finally submitted as "A Basic French Vocabulary" - suggested as basic for the two-year course in high schools and for the first …

Every reader, I am sure, has at one time or another chanced upon a passage which instantly struck his attention by its resemblance to something else which he had read. He may have dismissed this occurrence as a merely accidental similarity, or he may have questioned whether one work had influenced the other. The latter has been my experience. In reading the poetry of Theophile Gautier, I was startled by its similarity to some of the poetry of Amy Lowell and by its adherence to two of the principles of Imagism, as set forth by Miss Lowell in the preface …
