In this study, we tackle the challenge of light-matter interaction engineering and local field enhancement using various silicon photonic platforms based on three different approaches. (i) The first approach is based on boundary condition engineering where we present and show through simulation and experimental results, a silicon nanodisk “diabolo” configuration able to support significant local field enhancement levels in the range ~102 to 104 in the high index medium through proper structural modifications at the nanoscale. We show that the presented optical behavior is consistent with the anapole modes characterized by the observed near-field enhancement and coinciding with far-field suppression. …

Investigating Functionalized Cvd Graphene Heterostructures As Platforms For Hydrogen Gas Sensing, Evans Asiedu Addo-Mensah
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The hydrogen economy is rapidly advancing and is poised to become one of the world's largest economies, driven by the abundance of hydrogen gas. Several organizations, particularly in the United States of America, are closely or have been monitoring this development, with rapidly increasing interest. Considering that hydrogen gas has no taste, smell (odor), or color, and very combustible, it’s imperative to develop detectors and sensors capable of rapidly detecting leaks to prevent application disasters. Owing to its extraordinary mechanical and electrical characteristics, graphene is the material that has been studied the most. When combined with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Single-entity collisional electrochemistry (SECE) is a branch of single-entity electrochemistry. It can directly characterize entities/particles with single particle resolution through random collisions between particles and electrodes in a solution, and obtain rich physicochemical information, thus becoming one of the frontiers of electroanalytical chemistry in the past two decades. Interestingly, the (micro/nanoscale) sensing electrodes have evolved from a polarizable liquid/ liquid (mercury/liquid) interface to a solid/liquid interface and then to a liquid/liquid interface (i.e., an interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions, ITIES), as if they have completed a cycle (but in fact they have not). ITIES has become the latest sensing …

Novel Nanocomposite Of Carbonized Chitosan-Zinc Oxide-Magnetite For Adsorption Of Toxic Elements From Aqueous Solutions, Dalia A. Ali Eng, Ganna Gaber Ismail Eng.
Chemical Engineering
Herein, a novel nanocomposite (carbonized chitosan-zinc oxide-magnetite, CCZF) was developed to effectively remove toxic elements in water remediation. Combining the high adsorption capacities of chitosan with the magnetic properties of magnetite and the chemical stability of zinc oxide, the combination of these unique properties makes it an efficient and versatile material that offers a sustainable solution for water purification. The (CCZF) nanocomposite was synthesized through the coprecipitation method and characterized using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. The results showed …

The high energy density advantage of lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) makes them increasingly desirable; however, problems such as strong reactivity and dendrite growth of Li metal anode limit their practical uses. In this work, a novel Li-containing glycerol (LiGL) or lithicone protection layer on a 50 μm thick Li metal anode is employed for improving the performance of LMBs. This LiGL layer was accurately deposited via a molecular layer deposition (MLD) process at 150°C, using lithium tert-butoxide and glycerol as precursors. The as-formed LiGL coating layer is highly tunable in its thickness by simply adjusting MLD cycles and shows …

Deciphering Rodent Behavior: Unraveling Complex Decision-Making Through High-Throughput Data Analysis In Behavioral Neuroscience, Atanu Giri
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Understanding the effects of substance use on decision-making is critical for both clinical andtranslational research. In this thesis, I present two complementary studies that explore decision- making behavior in rodents with a focus on alcohol consumption and novel experimental frame- works. The first study examines the impact of acute alcohol consumption on decision-making in a behavioral approach-avoidance task. Rats were presented with a concurrent choice of consuming alcohol and sucrose mixtures across four distinct concentrations, allowing for the analysis of ap- proach or avoidance behavior. Sex-dependent differences emerged, with male rats demonstrating a significantly higher tendency to approach higher alcohol …

Magnetotransport, the response of electrical conduction to external magnetic field, acts as an important tool to reveal fundamental concepts behind exotic phenomena and plays a key role in enabling spintronic applications. Magnetotransport is generally sensitive to magnetic field orientations. In contrast, efficient and isotropic modulation of electronic transport, which is useful in technology applications such as omnidirectional sensing, is rarely seen, especially for pristine crystals. Here a strategy is proposed to realize extremely strong modulation of electron conduction by magnetic field which is independent of field direction. GdPS, a layered antiferromagnetic semiconductor with resistivity anisotropies, supports a field-driven insulator-to-metal transition …

Beyond Aesthetics To Elevate Sustainable Architectures: Selective Micropatterning Enhanced Efficiency In Colored Photovoltaic Modules, Mohammad Khairul Basher, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam, Kamal Alameh, Steven Hinckley
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In the past few years, there has been notable interest in the advancement of colored photovoltaic (PV) modules. This attention is driven by their visual attractiveness and the opportunities they offer for integrating PV technology into diverse applications. However, limited color options and low efficiency restrict the widespread application of PV modules. This research introduces a targeted micropatterning strategy aimed at improving the efficiency and visual appeal of colored photovoltaic (PV) modules. This approach entails the selective elimination of black pixels from a multicolored pattern. By doing so, the surface area of the PV module is augmented, fostering enhanced light …

Petroleum Engineering and Gas
Unconventional resources, such as heavy oil, are increasingly being explored and exploited due to the declining availability of conventional petroleum resources. Heavy crude oil poses challenges in production, transportation, and refining, due to its high viscosity, low API gravity, and elevated sulfur and metal content. Improving the quality of heavy oil can be achieved through the application of steam injection, which lowers the oil’s viscosity and enhances its flow. However, steam injection alone falls short of meeting the growing demand for higher-quality petroleum products. Catalytic upgrading is therefore being investigated as a viable solution to improve heavy oil quality. This …

Cancer metastasis is the leading cause of death in cancer patients worldwide and one of the major challenges in treating cancer. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) play a pivotal role in cancer metastasis. However, the content of CTCs in peripheral blood is minimal, so the detection of CTCs in real samples is extremely challenging. Therefore, efficient enrichment and early detection of CTCs are essential to achieve timely diagnosis of diseases. In this work, we constructed an innovative and sensitive single-nanoparticle collision electrochemistry (SNCE) biosensor for the detection of MCF-7 cells (human breast cancer cells) by immunomagnetic separation technique and liposome signal …

Taking advantage of the extremely small size of the gold nanodisk electrode, the single hydrogen nanobubble generated on the surface of the nanoelectrode was studied to evaluate its hydrogen evolution performance. It was found that compared with the bare gold nanodisk electrode, the bubble formation potential of the gold nanodisk electrode modified with tungsten disulfide quantum dots (WS2 QDs) on the surface was more positive, indicating that its hydrogen evolution activity was higher. Microdynamic model analysis shows that the average standard rate constant of the rate-determining step of the hydrogen evolution reaction of gold nanoelectrodes modified with WS2 …

Strontium-90, a highly radioactive isotope, accumulates within the food chain and skeletal structure, posing significant risks to human health. There is a critical need for a sensitive detection strategy for Strontium-90 in complex environmental samples. Here, solid-state nanochannels, modified with metal-organic frameworks (MOF) and specific aptamers, were engineered for highly sensitive detection of strontium ion (Sr2+). The synergistic effect between the reduced effective diameter of the nanochannels due to MOF and the specific binding of Sr2+ by aptamers amplifies the difference in ionic current signals, enhancing detection sensitivity significantly. The MOF-modified nanochannels exhibit highly sensitive detection of …
