The University of South Florida created an interdisciplinary team between the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Theatre and Dance to build innovative, mobile devices for the Performing Arts.  One device that evolved from the partnership is the Hands-Free Wheelchair for modern dance performance.  It is operated and controlled by the user’s weight-shift change in the seat.  In order to keep this control “hands-free”, while giving the user a sense of stability, kinetic armrests have been designed for assistance and use as a dance tool.  This design incorporates anthropomorphic data, engineering design, and the five basic arm positions …

Trace looks to his ex-boyfriend, Ryan, for advice, but instead becomes blinded with guilt about a brutal accident that occured two years prior.

USF Dance Performance major Alexander Rashuan Jones choreographed Running…Blank, a solo modern dance work, during the fall semester of 2010 as a part of his senior B.F.A. project. This solo was performed in the Fall 2010 USF Student Dance Production Concert. The work is a movement investigation of the idea of stress as it affects a person both mentally and physically. Jones constructed the dance from three movement phrases, exploring the concept of spiraling – through both the spine and the body as a whole, as well as the tension between being on balance and off balance. Managers are often critical to the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization.  As a result, organizations should hire individuals that have characteristics that match the needs and expectations of the firm (Wright, McMahan, & McWilliams, 1994).  However, the National Football League (NFL) may go against this conventional wisdom.  According to experts, the NFL has become a “copycat league” in which teams utilize league trends rather than hiring the most qualified candidate (Greenberg, 2009).  To determine the validity of this statement, the study examines the hiring practices of NFL head coaches over the past two decades.  By comparing the credentials of …

Motivation: As a researcher on the Severan Provincial Coinage database last summer, I became interested in the coinages of two neighboring cities in Cilicia, Anazarbus and Tarsus.  Each city advertised festivals and games on their coinage.  I noticed that although the themes were similar, the cities seemed to favor different emperors. I wanted to know why they differed in this aspect.

Correlates Of Attitudes Toward Academic And Physical Inclusive Practices For Students With Disabilities And Selected Leadership Behaviors Among Middle School Principals In North Carolina, Mary Houser, Virgina Dickens, Terence Hicks

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between attitudes toward academic and inclusive practices for students with disabilities and selected leadership behaviors (transformational and transactional) among principals in North Carolina. Participants for this study were randomly selected middle school principals from public schools in North Carolina. This study used a one-group, correlational design, using two instruments. The results of this study found a significant relationship between academic and physical inclusive practices and transformational leadership behaviors, r (75) =.320, p <. 01). However, no significant relationship was found between academic and physical inclusive practices and transactional leadership behaviors, r (72) = -.068, p <.05. The findings for this study suggest that the more North Carolina middle school principals demonstrated transformational leadership behaviors, the more positive their attitudes were toward academic and physical inclusive practices for students with disabilities.

This paper utilises Policy Design Theory to evaluate policy tool design and selection in Ireland in order to look beyond policy goals and rhetoric to the meanings and assumptions within policy design. A review of the Community Childcare Subvention Scheme (CCSS) reveals it to be an ‘incentive’ tool that is structured around a negative social construction of the target populations as ‘dependants’ with little capacity to solve their own problems. While immediate policy objectives are met through the design of the CCSS, if viewed in a wider context of overall national policy objectives a range of negative side-effects are evident …

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education

This paper discusses some ways educators may utilize their knowledge of generational characteristics and differences to enhance their teaching and inter-generational relationships with Millennials. It cautions against over- generalizing the popularly accepted generational characteristics to diverse students; it suggests that, like any other category of social classification, generational difference should be considered within the larger context of social diversity, including race, class, and gender,and geographical region. This paper critically discusses specific strategies that educators, who are working outside their comfort zones, can employ to increase the effectiveness of the educational experiences they facilitate for diverse millennial students.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) also known as Female Genital Cutting (FGC) captured my interest the first time I heard about the practice. I assumed, wrongly, that it was only practiced in remote areas of Africa where educational opportunities were few and outside influences were nil. After researching the topic it is clear that is not the case. FGM is practiced in many countries in Africa, the Middle East, and around the world. It is a barbaric practice that has no religious significance and is incredibly harmful to women and their health, both mentally and physically. I focused my research on …
