Exclusionary Discipline Disparities: A Case Study, Isaac Lundberg

Over several decades, what has come to be known as the discipline gap has been widely studied and well-documented. The discipline gap, or, the difference in rates of referrals, consequences, and exclusions exists for many marginalized populations and has been linked to the school-to-prison pipeline phenomenon and, furthermore, to achievement gaps in educational outcomes. In 2017, the Minnesota Department of Human Rights identified 43 school districts across the state who show significant discipline disparities. This study explored the issue in one of those school districts, seeking to identify causes and implications of the trend in order to make policy recommendations …

Current research has recognized considerable benefits of parent and family engagement with their children’s schools. However, research shows many systemic and individual barriers to effective parent and family engagement. Located in a rural Minnesota setting, Faribault Public Schools (FPS) has a large population of Somali refugee parents with limited English proficiency. Based on data from FPS, children from these families are falling behind in school. The FPS system has acknowledged the need to enhance engagement with these families to more effectively support their children’s success in school.

Thurgood Marshall Academic High School, located in San Francisco’s Bayview, Hunters Point, scored the third lowest in the most recent Academic Performance Index (API) Report. Based on the median household income, the Bayview is a low-income community and according to San Francisco data, is a high crime neighborhood. The odds are against Marshall to provide exceptional service to their students, but it once did. In 2001, Marshall had the highest college-going rate in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). Today, only 20% of its student body would be considered college ready. Public schools in Oregon have been struggling to include students of color and teachers of color for so long. Students of color represent more than one third of the school population, yet remain underserved, underrepresented, and over disciplined. Most of their teachers and support staff are White; the teachers of color represent less than 8% of the teaching staff. The students of color attend comprehensive high schools that generally ignore them--or push them out. Some students of color end up in alternative schools.

My overarching research question was: how do I utilize previous instructors, students, and campus partners to implement curriculum changes that will enhance classroom inclusivity and educational impact for this undergraduate leadership course? Using McNiff’s cycles of action research as a guiding framework, I explored the intentionality behind developing a curriculum that guides these classes. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the effects by gender of the Summit Learning Platform on student achievement in mathematics, English, reading, and Science measured by the ACT Aspire Summative Assessment for ninth-grade students in four schools in Arkansas. This study provides an in-depth study of mastery learning versus personalized learning through the Summit Learning Platform. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive effects of gender, SES, and BMI scores on academic achievement as measured by the ACT Aspire Exam for sixth- and eighth-grade students in rural, Delta schools in Arkansas. A quantitative, regression strategy was used to analyze the data. Predictor variables for each one of the hypotheses were gender, SES, and BMI scores. Criterion variables were ACT Aspire mathematics achievement and ACT Aspire reading achievement for Grades 6 and 8. Four Arkansas Delta schools participated in the study. That number increases to forty-four percent after five years of teaching. For those just entering the profession, these numbers can be daunting.
