Exploring Unique Dimensions Of Caring, Len Austin
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
This paper seeks to increase the growing body of knowledge relative to the “accompanying characteristics” or attendant attributes of caring (submissiveness, sacrifice, the ability to individualize, and being able to anticipate the needs of others). It also offers are four unique philosophical underpinnings of the attribute of caring. These dimensions include the reciprocal nature of caring, the hierarchical nature of caring, the requirement to be pro-active in caring, and being knowledgeable about the changing timetable of caring in people’s lives. In addition, an example of one university’s efforts to integrate caring across the curriculum is examined.

George Orwell once wrote an intriguing and acclaimed short-story called The Shooting of an Elephant. The story takes place in the mid 1930’s in Moulmein, lower Burma. Orwell was a young police officer in the province that was still under British colonial rule. He describes in lurid detail how is pressured into killing a tame elephant that had escaped his trainer’s chains and was enjoying a day of freedom. Most of the research on women in higher education management has been conducted in the Western setting, particularly in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia. Similar studies have also been done in Asia, with reference to Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, and in a few cases in Africa, with reference to South Africa and Kenya. The study explores how alumni can help community colleges in Southern Appalachia to create greater access for people in groups which are traditionally under-served by higher education. Semi-structured interviews conducted with alumni program directors and admissions officers at seven community colleges in the Southern Appalachian Region explore how they use alumni to recruit and retain students from non-dominant groups as well as students from generationally poor families. Examples of "best practices" illustrate ways alumni can help recruit, motivate, and retain students from historically under-served groups.

Women have entered the New York State public school district superintendency in increasing numbers over the past two decades. Traditionally a male dominated field, these women have successfully addressed various personal, career and district factors to obtain these positions. In this study, 121 actively employed women superintendents were surveyed regarding factors that may be contributing to their job satisfaction. Thirty independent variables related to access to the superintendency were analyzed relative to job satisfaction variables. Job satisfaction was measured through overall experience, the likelihood that one would rechoose the superintendency as a career goal, and overall satisfaction with specific responsibilities …

This qualitative study investigated the perceptions of students, administrators, and faculty at two universities within the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) regarding the extent, nature, and impact engagement with people of other faiths had on student faith development. The findings confirmed that constructive engagements with people of other faiths do indeed have a strong and positive impact on faith development. Significant barriers, however, were found that serve to impede the extent and quality of interactions with people of other faiths on the campus.
