Abstract

This mixed methods study aimed to categorize and analyze the frequencies and percentages of complex thinking in the PARCC practices assessments grades 3 and 4. The Hess’ Cognitive Rigor Matrix was employed for the first part of the study to code each of the PARCC assessment questions in Language Arts and Mathematics Grades 3 and 4 based on pre-existing codes. Deductive category application was utilized to connect the language from Hess’ Cognitive Rigor Matrix to the language of the questions in the tests. The availability and ease of access to online bachelor's degree programs has led to a dynamic shift in the world of higher education. While overall, there has been a decrease in student enrollments, distance student enrollment has been growing. According to a report by the Babson Survey Research Group, between the fall of 2012 and the fall of 2016 students pursuing higher education at all levels across degree-granting institutions fell by 3.8%. Public schools in Oregon have been struggling to include students of color and teachers of color for so long. Students of color represent more than one third of the school population, yet remain underserved, underrepresented, and over disciplined. Most of their teachers and support staff are White; the teachers of color represent less than 8% of the teaching staff. The students of color attend comprehensive high schools that generally ignore them--or push them out. Some students of color end up in alternative schools.

The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive effects of gender, SES, and BMI scores on academic achievement as measured by the ACT Aspire Exam for sixth- and eighth-grade students in rural, Delta schools in Arkansas. A quantitative, regression strategy was used to analyze the data. Predictor variables for each one of the hypotheses were gender, SES, and BMI scores. Criterion variables were ACT Aspire mathematics achievement and ACT Aspire reading achievement for Grades 6 and 8. Four Arkansas Delta schools participated in the study. That number increases to forty-four percent after five years of teaching. For those just entering the profession, these numbers can be daunting.
