In this paper I will present information pertaining to the relationship between the arts and academic achievement, specifically concentrating on incorporating literacy techniques into the art room. The definition of what it means to be literate and how this definition is changing will also be discussed. Information regarding studies related to art education and student achievement in school will be presented. This is a qualitative, action research study focused on how an individualized art curriculum developed by teacher and student, affects the student’s view on art, career path, and self. The study participants include nine students with the same Individual Learning Program (ILP) teacher, who chose to help them create their own curriculum in art, based on their own interests and/or relating art to their future college major. The purpose of this study was to identify and evaluate the critical thinking strategies being used in my classroom. The motivation and rationale behind this specific action research project was to rectify issues I identified in my own teaching and my students’ performance regarding critical thinking in planning and executing works of art. Creativity, an already elusive term, has further transformed into a conceptual quagmire of numerous open and closed definitions during the course of the past two decades. Although creativity lacks a concrete identification, our society continues to find answers to socially and economically based problems through means labeled as creative thinking. This suggests that creativity is structurally linked to discussions on innovation—which in its exclusivity yields some positive outcomes—but negates further definitions or explorations of the word.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and describe the visual arts beliefs and practices of eight K-1 teachers in four schools and in two different school districts in a southern state. Using a phenomenological framework (Creswell, 2007; Leedy & Ormrod, 2005), the research revealed the teachers’ understandings of beliefs and how they applied them to their early childhood classrooms. Data were collected consisting of formal and informal interviews with the eight teachers. Interview data were analyzed using triangulation in phenomenological reflection suggested by van Manen (1990). The analysis yielded three major themes and three sub-themes. The first …

The primary purpose of this study was to establish whether or not students and industry professionals share the same views about what students should be learning in animation education, what skills are necessary, and whether or not students graduating with a bachelor’s degree would be adequately prepared for an entry level position. To establish where misconceptions lie, surveys were issued to three groups: undergraduate students, post-graduate students, and industry professionals. These surveys were then analyzed using paired t-test for validation and question relevance, and ANOVA models to establish whether or not groups shared viewpoints.
