If awarded this fellowship, I will devote my time to employ graphic design toward creating positive social change for youth living in the underprivileged neighborhoods of Providence, Rhode Island. The change my project will embody addresses a paradigm shift taking place in the graphic design community as the focus moves from design as a practice that fuels a market to the awareness that graphic design is a social practice and that it can be vehicle for powerful and sustainable social change. What are we saying to children when we leave the creativity to others in a visual environment, infused with “attitude”, snobbery, acquisitiveness and Pollyanna innocence? We’re saying that we approve this message. Visual arts teach media literacy in an atmosphere that implicitly uses vices to secure attention. School experiences cannot compete. Parents and teachers, pleading incompetence, pass undiscerning choices to the next generation. Educational illustration typically amounts to copy-machine ready, poorly drawn, saccharin cartoons. Five artists working in wood, glass, clay, metal and fiber collaborate with Pollack’s design team to create a new line of fabrics. Pollack, the NYC textile design firm founded by Mark Pollack 76 TX, embarked on a two-year project with Rachel Doriss 99 TX, to collaborate with five artists and designers working in different media. The goal? To create a line of newly released fabrics—called simply The Makers Collection.

Art programming, both inside and outside of school, is beneficial to children. It is beneficial because art competencies promote higher order thinking, problem solving skills, self-efficacy, and engagement. It has been shown, however, that not all American students have access to quality art programming. If students are not getting regular art programming from art teachers are they getting a version of art instruction from their classroom teachers? In this study 56 elementary teachers at a mid-western school district were surveyed and interviewed on how they have used visual art in the classroom. Reviewing the existing literature of women and/or mothers in academic roles paints a pretty grim picture. Even worse is the prediction for success that shies far from optimistic. Some inequities in higher education need to be considered: "women lag behind their male counterparts in tenure status, promotion to full professor, and salary. Overall, considering all full-time faculty at all types of institutions, women earn about 80 percent of what men earn" ("Inequities Persist", 2005, p. 1). Linear Perspective And Montage: Two Dominating Paradigms In Art Education, Charles R. Garoian

As a former public high school art teacher, I was always puzzled by the common belief held by my students in what they referred to as the right way to represent images and ideas in their drawings and paintings. After years of producing art works during early childhood that appeared to be uninhibited in their expressive qualities, their world view in adolescence had shifted dramatically towards a preoccupation with photographic representation realism.

When the Editor and Associate Editor conceived of this call for papers for PreOccupy/Maximum Occupancy, it was based on the Caucus members’ input during the annual meetings of the Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education (CSTAE) at the National Art Education Association conference, NAEA 2012, New York. We listened to our colleagues speak about the year’s events, and we discussed how we as art educators could respond to the needs of the Caucus and of our field for Volume 33 of the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education (JSTAE).
