Pubspectra - Open Data Access Fluorescence Spectra, George Mcnamara

George McNamara

The Internet is enabling greater access to spectral imaging publications, spectral graphs, and data than that was available a generation ago. The spectral imaging systems discussed in this issue of Cytometry work because reagent and hardware spectra are reproducible, reusable, and provide input to spectral unmixing and spectral components recognition algorithms. These spectra need to be readily available in order to determine what to purchase, how to use it, and what the output means. We refer to several commercially sponsored and academic spectral web sites and discuss our spectral graphing and data sites. Sites include fluorescent dye graph servers from …

A Profile Of Canadians Over The Age Of 65 Years Living With Coexisting Vision And Mobility Impairments: A Sequential Mixed Method Analysis, Jessica G. Huber-Wilhelm 2012 The University of Western Ontario

A Profile Of Canadians Over The Age Of 65 Years Living With Coexisting Vision And Mobility Impairments: A Sequential Mixed Method Analysis, Jessica G. Huber-Wilhelm

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of this dissertation was (i) to investigate the prevalence of older Canadian adults living with coexisting vision and mobility impairments, and (ii) to describe how disability associated with both impairments relate to health status, activities of daily living, physical activity participation, assistive technology use, and health care services. These goals were achieved by using mixed methodology approach.

The first manuscript was based on secondary analyses of the 2006/2007 National Population Health Survey (NPHS). The results of the secondary analysis of the NPHS revealed that approximately 3% of the Canadian population over the age of 65 was living with …

Health Effects Of Trihalomethanes As Chlorinated Disinfection By Products: A Review Article, Mohammad Reza Mohammad Shafiee, Lobat Taghavi 2012 Islamic Azad University, Najaf Abad

Health Effects Of Trihalomethanes As Chlorinated Disinfection By Products: A Review Article, Mohammad Reza Mohammad Shafiee, Lobat Taghavi

Mohammad Reza Mohammad Shafiee

Trihalomethanes (THMs) were among the first disinfection byproducts to be discovered in chlorinated water. The substances form during a reaction between chlorine and organic matter in the water. Trihalomethanes are suspected to have negative effects on birth such as, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation in term births, as well as gestational age and preterm delivery. There are also some evidences showing these by-products to be mutagenic and carcinogenic, the greatest amount of evidence being related to the bladder cancer. However, there exist inconsistencies regarding such effects of THMs as different studies have provided different results in this regard. The …

Quorum Sensing Activity In Ophiostoma Ulmi: Effects Of Fusel Oils And Branched Chain Amino Acids On Yeast-Mycelial Dimorphism, A. Berrocal, J. Navarrete, C. Oviedo, K. W. Nickerson 2012 Universidad del Bio-Bio

Quorum Sensing Activity In Ophiostoma Ulmi: Effects Of Fusel Oils And Branched Chain Amino Acids On Yeast-Mycelial Dimorphism, A. Berrocal, J. Navarrete, C. Oviedo, K. W. Nickerson

Kenneth Nickerson Papers

Aims: For Ophiostoma (Ceratocystis) ulmi, the ability to undergo morphological change is a crucial factor for its virulence. To gain an understanding of quorum- sensing activity in O. ulmi as it relates to yeast-mycelium dimorphism control, this study examines the effects of branched-chain amino acids as well as their fusel alcohols and fusel acids as quorum sensing molecules.

Methods and Results: In a defined medium containing glucose, proline and salts, O. ulmi grew as yeasts when the culture was inoculated with a high density of spores (2-107 CFU ml-1) and as mycelia when inoculated …

This Shrew Is A Jumping Mouse (Mammalia, Dipodidae): Sorex Dichrurus Rafinesque, 1833 Is A Synonym Of Zapus Hudsonius (Zimmermann, 1780), Neal Woodman 2011 USGS

This Shrew Is A Jumping Mouse (Mammalia, Dipodidae): Sorex Dichrurus Rafinesque, 1833 Is A Synonym Of Zapus Hudsonius (Zimmermann, 1780), Neal Woodman

Neal Woodman

Constantine S. Rafinesque described Sorex dichrurus as a shrew in 1833, based on a specimen he found in a proprietary museum near Niagara Falls on the New York/Ontario border. The name subsequently has been ignored by the scientific community. By describing this specimen as a shrew and ascribing it to the genus Sorex, Rafinesque clearly indicated that his species should be considered a member of the taxonomic family now recognized as the Soricidae (Mammalia, Eulipotyphla). Yet, the description of the animal, and its comparison to ‘‘Gerbillus,’’ clearly identify it as a dipodid rodent, specifically Zapus hudsonius (Zimmermann, 1780); S. dichrurus …

London Free Press And Sun Media: Reader Beware Of Bias., Richard B. Philp

Richard B. Philp

Recent articles in the London Free Press, a Sun Media publication, have attempted to discredit environmentalists concerned about climate change and the environmental impact of the Alberta tar sands. Articles by authors with right wing leanings (but not so identified) have appeared in the news pages rather than in the editorial pages where they belong. These have promoted the tar sands and their related pipelines, suggested an American conspiracy to influence public opinion by funding Canadian environmental groups and attempted to resurrect the so-called e-mail scandal from climate scientists. The present paper offers a rebuttal to these claims with supporting references.

Seasonal Transport Of Suspended Solids And Nutrients Between Bear River And Bear Lake, Cody M. Allen 2011 Utah State University

Seasonal Transport Of Suspended Solids And Nutrients Between Bear River And Bear Lake, Cody M. Allen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

I measured inflows and outflows of nutrients and suspended solid through the wetland complex, known as Dingle Marsh, at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge between October 2007 and September 2008. My analysis of changes throughout the year will help Dingle Marsh managers adjust the timing and volume of water movement between Bear River and Bear Lake to meet defined refuge goals, such as improving bird or other animal habitat. These results could also be used to protect Bear Lake’s water quality.

Automated samplers took readings of dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH and water temperature every 30 minutes. These values were …

Impact Of Crop And Residue Management On The Physical And Chemical Stabilization Of Soil Organic Matter At Farm Level, Ana B. Wingeyer 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Impact Of Crop And Residue Management On The Physical And Chemical Stabilization Of Soil Organic Matter At Farm Level, Ana B. Wingeyer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation explores changes over time in soil organic matter (SOM) stabilization of two irrigated production fields: a continuous maize sequence that was converted from no-till to conservation deep tillage (Site 1), and a no-till maize-soybean rotation (Site 2). An integrated approach using humic acid extractions and density-based physical fractionation of SOM within aggregate size classes was developed to evaluate the changes in SOM stabilization (physical protection, organo-mineral associations and humification). At Site 1, loss of SOM in the surface layer was compensated for by increased SOM in deeper soil layers with no net change in C stocks. Whole field …

Zap1 Control Of Cell-Cell Signaling In Candida Albicans Biofilms, Shantanu Ganguly, Andrew C. Bishop, Wenjie Xu, Suman Ghosh, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Frederick Lanni, Jana Patton-Vogt, Aaron P. Mitchell 2011 Carnegie Mellon University

Zap1 Control Of Cell-Cell Signaling In Candida Albicans Biofilms, Shantanu Ganguly, Andrew C. Bishop, Wenjie Xu, Suman Ghosh, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Frederick Lanni, Jana Patton-Vogt, Aaron P. Mitchell

Kenneth Nickerson Papers

Biofilms of Candida albicans include both yeast cells and hyphae. Prior studies indicated that a zap1/ mutant, defective in zinc regulator Zap1, has increased accumulation of yeast cells in biofilms. This altered yeast-hypha balance may arise from internal regulatory alterations or from an effect on the production of diffusible quorum-sensing (QS) molecules. Here, we develop biosensor reporter strains that express yeastspecific YWP1-RFP or hypha-specific HWP1-RFP, along with a constitutive TDH3-GFP normalization standard. Seeding these biosensor strains into biofilms allows a biological activity assay of the surrounding biofilm milieu. A zap1/ biofilm induces the yeast-specific YWP1-RFP reporter in a wild-type …

The Health Status, Concerns, And Reform In Uruguay With An Emphasis On Health Promotion Programs Geared Towards The Care And Development Of The Country's Children And Adolescents, Melissa Raquel Ramírez

Honors Scholar Theses

This study was conducted in Montevideo, Uruguay, where I examined the actions that the country and society as a whole, its various communities, the Uruguayan government, and the people take in order to prevent disease and promote a healthy society. An ethnographic experiential and evidence-based approach, including personal experience, interviews, and official government documents, was used to fully describe the way the system operates. Due to Uruguay's demographic characteristics, particular attention was paid to children and adolescents. For this thesis, Uruguay is described in terms of its history, physical and mental health issues, society's shared health concerns, and its vulnerable …

Impact Of Alternative Range Management Systems On Grasslands In The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, Luis E. Ramirez 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Impact Of Alternative Range Management Systems On Grasslands In The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, Luis E. Ramirez

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Land management strategies can directly and indirectly affect plant assemblages and their behavior. Little research has been performed in south central Nebraska to quantify the effect of fire and grazing interactions on species composition, vegetation structure, forage quality, and potential cost associated with land management.

I evaluate the effect of season-long continuous, patch-burning, and rotational grazing approaches on vegetation and ranching costs to determine their value as conservation tools. This study includes data collected between 2007 and 2009 from grasslands in south central Nebraska. I found that land management influence plant assemblages by shifting communities when grazing and/or fire are …
