Tetrigidae is a caeliferan family of Orthoptera constituting a diverse and relatively ancient lineage of small Orthopterans, which has its greatest diversity in tropical and subtropical areas. However, to date, few studies have been conducted on the identification and description of Tetrigidae species in Ethiopia, and even fewer molecular data are available. Hence, we performed the first species delimitation study via DNA barcoding of species belonging to the genera Paratettix, Leptacrydium, Dasyleurotettix, and Morphopoides from Ethiopia. We provide 35 new sequences of the COI gene belonging to six species of these genera. We show that Ethiopian Tetrigidae can be successfully …

Global demand for seafood continues to rise, positioning aquaculture as a critical pathway for improving food security, nutrition, and rural livelihoods. In Kenya, the aquaculture sector remains constrained by structural challenges, with fish feed accounting for 60%–70% of production costs and limiting sectoral growth, particularly for smallholder farmers. This review critically analyzes Kenya's fish feed sector through an integrated PESTEL-SWOT framework, drawing on a scoping review of academic literature, policy reports, and sector development studies. The paper highlights key macro-level drivers, including fragmented policy implementation, dependency on imported ingredients, and climate-related risks, and connects these with internal industry dynamics such …

Background: Volatile pyrethroid spatial repellents (VPSRs) can prevent mosquito-borne diseases including malaria and dengue fever, but the use of varied evaluation methods has resulted in a lack of clarity regarding their protective efficacy (PE) against contact with mosquitoes. This systematic review and meta-analysis consolidates the entomological evidence base on the PE of VPSRs against Anopheles, Aedes, and Culex mosquitoes and different test methods used. Methods: We identified studies completed between January 2000 and September 2023 by searching through databases, conference abstracts, and personal correspondences. Included studies were semi-field or field studies that measured the PE of VPSRs using human landing …
Exploring The Role Of Ecological Traits In Shaping Spatial Patterns Of Genetic Diversity, Rilquer Mascarenhas Da Silva
Exploring The Role Of Ecological Traits In Shaping Spatial Patterns Of Genetic Diversity, Rilquer Mascarenhas Da Silva
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The field of comparative phylogeography aims at uncovering common underlying causes for shared patterns of diversity and diversification at the population level. However, it is now widely accepted that intraspecific genetic diversity patterns can differ considerably across co-occurring taxa due to ecological processes acting at the population level (and influencing individual movement and abundance). To model the processes underlying lineage diversification and demographic shifts in response to environmental changes, phylogeographers and population geneticists are now faced with the challenge of incorporating measurements of species ecological traits into their molecular studies. This dissertation aimed at investigating how different types of ecological …

Mechanistic Insights Into The Neuroprotective Effects Of The Antidepressant Agomelatine In Alzheimer's Disease, Grace Terry
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease that has limited treatment options and no cure. AD is characterized by robust pathology including extracellular amyloid beta plaques, intracellular neurofibrillary tangles, neuronal and synaptic loss, neuroinflammation, and brain atrophy. AD presents with cognitive decline and memory loss but only years after neuropathology has started to accumulate. This robust pathology has made AD difficult to treat and highlights the need for therapeutics that modulate multiple pathways. Agomelatine (AGO) was selected by a high-throughput machine learning drug repurposing algorithm by our collaborator Dr. Lie Xie (Hunter College Dept. of Comp. Sci.) as having …

Assessment Of Microbial Quality And Safety, Including Aflatoxin B1, In Buckwheat Flour And Groats, La Fontaine Bahatsi
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), a gluten-free pseudocereal, has gained popularity in global food markets for its nutritional value and functional properties. However, despite its health-promoting potential, buckwheat is vulnerable to microbial contamination and mycotoxin accumulation during cultivation, processing, and storage. These factors present significant food safety concerns that remain understudied, particularly in North America.
This study investigated the microbiological quality and mycotoxin contamination of buckwheat flour and groats collected from different suppliers via online sourcing. Samples were collected in two consecutive years (2024-2025). Microbiological quality, including aerobic plate counts (APC), Enterobacteriaceae, coliforms, E. coli, yeasts, and molds, was evaluated …

First Confirmed Nebraska Breeding Record Of The Common Raven (Corvus Corax) Since The 19th Century, Eugene A. Huryn, Jacob C. Cooper
Nebraska Bird Review
In Nebraska, the Common Raven was likely widespread prior to 1900, being codistributed with the American Bison (Bison bison). Records in this time are spotty, but consistent. Thomas Say reported a nearly fledged brood—the only confirmed breeding record in this period—at Fort Calhoun in Washington County on May 12, 1820. A Common Raven was collected at Fort Randall, on the Missouri River just north of the modern Nebraska–South Dakota border, in the fall of 1857 during the Lieutenant Warren Expeditions. Another specimen, now lost, was collected by J. B. Hasty in 1899 in Arapahoe, Furnas County. Bruner et …

Summer Field Report, June–July 2025, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
I have mentioned previously the breeding categories that are available to observers in eBird checklists. This database is becoming more comprehensive and useful, and I encourage observers to use this eBird feature.
Usefulness of Merlin-derived checklists continues to be an issue. As an example, Merlin seems to love White-winged Doves; there were 52 undocumented Merlin reports of this species this summer, no doubt some correctly identified and acceptable if observers had taken a minute to add even minimal observation details to support Merlin’s identifications.
A vexing issue for me is determining the status of midsummer (i.e. between spring and fall …

Wood modification is essential to enhance the performance and longevity of wood as a material while maintaining its natural and sustainable characteristics. By modifying wood, its properties can be significantly improved without the need for toxic preservatives. Thus bio-based wood modification is vital for enhancing wood properties sustainably, reducing environmental impact, and meeting the demand for eco-friendly, non-toxic, and renewable material solutions. In this study, bio-based formulae were used on pine sapwood for enhanced decay and weathering resistance. Quebracho tannin solutions (20 %) with different concentrations of citric acid (CA) as a cross-linker were prepared and then vacuum-pressure impregnated in Scots …

Repurposing Atractylenolide Iii, A Natural Anti-Inflammatory Compound, For Alzheimer’S Disease, Angela M. Steele
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a debilitating neurological condition ranked as the fifth leading cause of death in adults over the age of 65. Despite the severity, 98% of drugs have failed as treatments for AD. Current novel drug development approaches have been unable to produce a disease-modifying treatment as they often have a one-target approach, not accounting for the complex nature of the disease. One of the hallmarks of the disease, inflammation, may provide a better target for treatment because it interacts with multiple facets of the disease. Drug repurposing to identify compounds that mitigate inflammation in AD could provide …

Detecting Sonic Hedgehog Expression In The Adult Mouse Brain Using A Gene Expression Tracer, Kendra Stephens-Jones
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) is best known for its role in development, yet evidence supports Shh signaling plays a functional role in the adult brain. Previous work demonstrated that Shh is expressed by dopamine (DA) neurons in the ventral midbrain and that loss of Shh from these neurons leads to late-onset motor and structural abnormalities resembling Parkinson’s disease. However, the extent of Shh expression and its connectivity to the striatum in the adult mouse brain remain unclear due to the lack of reliable antibodies for Shh detection. To address this gap, the present study employed Shh L/L and DAT-Cre+/- mice …

Dual Investigations Into Broiler Health: Mitochondrial Gene Expression In Ascites Susceptibility And G-1,25(Oh)₂D₃-Driven Modulation Of Bone And Gut Integrity In Lameness, Layla Hussein Al-Mitib
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Modern broiler production faces persistent challenges from metabolic and skeletal disorders, particularly ascites and bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO), which compromise animal welfare and production efficiency. This dissertation examines two key factors that contribute to these conditions: mitochondrial gene expression associated with pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS) and the role of intestinal barrier integrity in mitigating lameness. In the first study, the expression of mitochondrial genes COXII and ATP6 was evaluated in the breast, thigh, and lung tissues of three broiler genetic lines—ascites-susceptible (SUS), ascites-resistant (RES), and unselected relaxed (REL). While no significant expression differences were observed in muscle tissues, SUS …

Effects Of Soil Profile Rebuilding Techniques On Soil Properties And Tree Growth, Diksha Tamang
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
Urban land development usually results in compacted soils, creating unfavorable conditions for tree establishment and growth. Soil Profile Rebuilding (SPR) is an urban soil rehabilitation technique to address soil compaction on site. However, the impacts of SPR on urban soils and tree growth in the southeast region remain unexplored. To address this research gap, this study assessed the efficacy of the SPR techniques in improving degraded urban soils including soil physical, chemical, and biological properties, and tree growth. Twelve experimental plots (12.2 m L*0.5 m W; 5.6 m2) were established using a completely randomized experimental design (4 soil treatments; 3 …

Background: Rare genetic variation provided by whole genome sequence datasets has been relatively less explored for its contributions to human traits. Meta-analysis of sequencing data offers advantages by integrating larger sample sizes from diverse cohorts, thereby increasing the likelihood of discovering novel insights into complex traits. Furthermore, emerging methods in genome-wide rare variant association testing further improve power and interpretability.
Results: Here, we conduct the largest meta-analysis of whole genome sequencing for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), a therapeutic target for coronary artery disease, analyzing data from 246 K participants and integrating 1.23B variants from the UK Biobank and the Trans-Omics …
Feed Prices, Substitution Patterns, And Technical Efficiency In Feedlot Cattle, Andrew E. Anderson, James L. Mitchell, Jamie R. Luke
Feed Prices, Substitution Patterns, And Technical Efficiency In Feedlot Cattle, Andrew E. Anderson, James L. Mitchell, Jamie R. Luke
Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations
The cattle feeding industry is sandwiched between relatively volatile commodity markets, and efficiency is critical. Changing prices for feedstuffs may cause substitution and output effects, in turn impacting technical efficiency. Using Kansas feedlot data, we estimate the effects of feed prices on cattle performance, focusing on the feed conversion ratio, average daily gain, and days on feed. Results show that several feed prices do indeed impact technical efficiency. These results have implications for management adapting to changing feed prices. Further, there are policy implications for programs that may impact commodity prices.
Procedures For Rangeland Condition Assessment In The Kimberley 2025, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Procedures For Rangeland Condition Assessment In The Kimberley 2025, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Natural resources published reports
This report defines the procedures used in 2025 by DPIRD to complete rangeland condition assessment (RCA) in the Kimberley region which has grass-based pastures. For the rest of the pastoral estate, DPIRD uses the Procedures for RCA in the Pilbara and southern rangelands which have predominantly shrub pastures.
RCA is the process DPIRD uses to make systematic, station-level assessment of rangeland. Rangeland condition considers both the condition of pastures (as defined in the 'Pasture condition guide for the Kimberley') and soils as determined by erosion, using the erosion assessment method on pastoral lands in Western Australia. The methods have evolved …

The origin of mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) remains a major challenge in hepato-pancreato-biliary pathology. These cystic tumors are defined by their mucinous epithelium and ovarian-like stroma, with an estimated 10% risk of progression to invasive carcinoma. The origin of the ovarian-like stroma remains a subject of debate. In this study, we conducted immunohistochemical profiling, targeted DNA sequencing, and genome-wide DNA methylation analysis on a cohort of 15 pancreatic MCNs (MCN-P) and six hepatic MCNs (MCN-L). Using immunohistochemistry and targeted DNA sequencing, we unequivocally established the diagnosis of MCN. Unsupervised DNA methylation profile analysis of reference classes of pancreatic neoplasms (11 …

Topologically associating domains (TADs) and chromatin architectural loops impact promoter-enhancer interactions, with CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) defining TAD borders and loop anchors. TAD boundaries and loops progressively strengthen upon embryonic stem (ES) cell differentiation, underscoring the importance of chromatin topology in ontogeny. However, the mechanisms driving this process remain unclear. Here we show a widespread increase in CTCF-RNA-binding protein (RBP) interactions upon ES to neural stem (NS) cell differentiation. While dispensable in ES cells, RBPs reinforce CTCF-anchored chromatin topology in NS cells. We identify Pantr1, a non-coding RNA, as a key facilitator of CTCF-RBP interactions, promoting chromatin maturation. Using acute CTCF …

Objective: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) contain valuable information that can be leveraged by providers to perform timely interventions and improve quality of life and survival. However, the implementation of electronic PROs (ePROs) remains a challenge from technical and evaluation perspectives. Our objective was to construct a robust electronic health record (EHR)-integrated ePRO information infrastructure founded on RE-AIM (reach-effectiveness-adoption-implementation-maintenance) principles.
Materials and methods: We used Epic Systems as our EHR platform to build the MD Anderson Symptom Index Head and Neck Module (MDASI-HN) for release to all patients undergoing evaluation and/or treatment in our HN Radiation Oncology clinics. RE-AIM metrics were established …

Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen, causes systemic and superficial infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. Treatment of fungal infections is complicated by limited antifungal options and the development of drug resistance. Previous work from our group demonstrated the efficacy of the anti-virulence peptide EntV and shorter variants against C. albicans infection in various animal models, including mouse models of oropharyngeal candidiasis and disseminated infection and a rat venous catheter model. However, the mechanism of action, which abrogates fungal virulence without fungicidal or fungistatic activity, has remained unknown. We used a combination of cell biological, biochemical, genomic, and genetic approaches to …

Nonsyndromic orofacial clefts (OFCs) are common, heritable birth defects caused by both genetic and environmental risk factors. Despite the identification of many genetic loci harboring OFC-risk variants, there are many unknown genetic determinants of OFC. Furthermore, while the process of embryonic facial development is well characterized, the molecular mechanisms that underly it are not. This represents a major hurdle in understanding how disruptions in these biological processes result in OFC. Thus, we sought to identify novel OFC-risk loci through a genome-wide multi-ancestry study of five nested OFC phenotypes (isolated cleft lip [CLO], isolated cleft palate [CPO], cleft lip and palate …

Many peptide drugs rely on nonproteinogenic amino acids and chemical modifications for improved activity and proteolytic stability. However, these features also make drug production expensive and challenging to scale. Here, we engineered small, linear, proteinogenic peptides that bind human programmed death-ligand 1 (hPD-L1) with high affinity and stability using mRNA display affinity maturation. The resulting peptides, SPAM2 and SPAM3, have antibody-like affinities for hPD-L1 (dissociation constants between ~250 and 300 pM) and are selective for hPD-L1. Both SPAM2 and SPAM3 compete with hPD-L1 ligands known to interact with the programmed cell death protein 1 site and are stable in human …

Purpose: Accurate cardiac chamber segmentation is crucial for improving cardiac sparing in magnetic resonance (MR)-guided adaptive radiation therapy, especially in patients at risk for radiation-induced cardiotoxicity. Here, we developed and evaluated automatic segmentation models for cardiac chambers that use daily MR images acquired on a 1.5-T MR-Linac system.
Methods and materials: Twenty healthy volunteers underwent daily MR scanning on a 1.5-T MR-Linac, with 2 radial sequences: T2/T1 3DVaneXD balanced fast field echo with spectral attenuated inversion recovery (bFFE-SPAIR) and T1 3DVaneXD mDixon. Three flip angles were tested for each sequence to determine optimal image quality for chamber segmentation. Full-resolution 3D …

Subcutaneous (SC) formulations of oncology therapies offer a potentially less time-consuming and more convenient alternative to intravenous (IV) administration. However, exploring the potential benefits of SC over IV administration from a broader perspective is necessary to understand the larger-scale impact. In this systematic literature review (SLR), we evaluated the efficacy, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), safety, and patient and healthcare provider (HCP) preference for SC/IV oncology therapies, along with differences in patient outcomes, costs, and time requirements. The SLR was conducted in January 2019 and updated in May 2023, and included 169 publications. Studies providing comparative results between IV and SC formulations regarding …
