Acid-Base Regulation Mechanisms In The West African Lungfish Protopterus Annectens: An Investigation Into The Role Of The Sodium Proton Exchanger (Nhe), Victor H. Q. Pham-Ho Msc
Acid-Base Regulation Mechanisms In The West African Lungfish Protopterus Annectens: An Investigation Into The Role Of The Sodium Proton Exchanger (Nhe), Victor H. Q. Pham-Ho Msc
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The lungfish possesses a primitive lung and underdeveloped gills, making use of bimodal respiration. Like other freshwater fishes they must regulate ion- and acid-base equilibrium through active ion uptake (driven by pumps and ion transporters), albeit with challenges due to their underdeveloped gills. My thesis aimed to elucidate the role of the sodium proton exchangers (NHE), encoded by the genes slc9a1/nhe1, slc9a2/nhe2 and slc9a3/nhe3, which are hypothesized to contribute towards acid-base regulation. Pharmacologically, amiloride, a sodium-transport inhibitor, and 5-(N-Ethyl N-isopropyl)-Amiloride (EIPA), an NHE specific inhibitor, affected whole-animal titratable acidity and ammonia fluxes, supporting a physiological function of the NHE. Next, …
Investigating The Immunostimulatory Potential Of Dsrna-Silk Nanoparticle Complexes In Melanoma, Samuel J. Peters
Investigating The Immunostimulatory Potential Of Dsrna-Silk Nanoparticle Complexes In Melanoma, Samuel J. Peters
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The rate of resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment in metastatic melanoma is quite high, with an overall rate of 70%. Melanoma achieves these high rates of resistance by suppressing the immune response in the tumour microenvironment (TME), making them immunologically “cold”. The type 1 interferon response could be leveraged to initiate immune responses in melanoma, making their “cold” TMEs “warm” again. Double-stranded ribonucleic acids (dsRNAs) are potent activators of an innate immune response; however, they are susceptible to degradation by nucleases present in the body and need a carrier. Silk nanoparticles (SNPs) are an ideal drug-delivery platform as they …
Analysis Of Alternative Oxidase In Non-Angiosperm Plants, Anissa M. Francis
Analysis Of Alternative Oxidase In Non-Angiosperm Plants, Anissa M. Francis
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Alternative oxidase (AOX) is a mitochondrial terminal oxidase that provides an alternative pathway for electron transport, allowing plants to maintain respiratory flexibility under environmental stress conditions. While AOX has been extensively studied in angiosperms (flowering plants), little is known about its distribution and conservation in non-angiosperms. Based on gaps identified in the literature, this thesis investigated the distribution of AOX across non-angiosperm plant lineages. Although AOX is present in many green algae and is therefore considered to be an ancient protein that originated before the existence of non-angiosperm plants, it remains unclear whether the protein is uniformly distributed across these …
Evops: Evolutionary Patch Selection In The Embedding Space Of Whole Slide Images, Saya Hashemian
Evops: Evolutionary Patch Selection In The Embedding Space Of Whole Slide Images, Saya Hashemian
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Computational pathology increasingly relies on the analysis of Whole-Slide Images (WSIs), which capture tissue specimens at gigapixel resolution. Because a single slide is far too large to process directly, the
prevailing paradigm decomposes each WSI into thousands of small patches and encodes them as high- dimensional feature embeddings using deep learning backbones. While effective, this paradigm carries a
substantial cost: the resulting collections of patch embeddings are computationally expensive to store and process, and they are frequently dominated by redundant, homogeneous, or otherwise uninformative tissue regions that dilute the diagnostic signal. Existing patch selection methods largely depend on heuristic or …

CC-chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) is involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases associated with monocyte/macrophage recruitment, such as HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), tuberculosis, and atherosclerosis. The rs1024611 (alleles: A>G; G is the risk allele) polymorphism in the CCL2 cis-regulatory region is associated with increased CCL2 expression in vitro and ex vivo, leukocyte mobilization in vivo, and deleterious disease outcomes. However, the molecular basis for the rs1024611-associated differential CCL2 expression remains poorly characterized. It is conceivable that genetic variant(s) in linkage disequilibrium (LD) with rs1024611 could mediate such effects. Previously, we used rs13900 (alleles: C>T) in the CCL2 …

Objective: Pediatric anxiety disorders are common and predict adult psychopathology, yet current treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), produce lasting remission in less than 50% of affected youths. To support the search for improved, mechanistically grounded interventions, this study evaluated neural efficiency, defined as similarity in functional connectivity between a threat task and rest, as a potential biomarker. The study evaluated neural efficiency in relation to anxiety diagnosis and treatment response.
Methods: The authors compared 103 youths with an anxiety disorder diagnosis (mean age, 12.5 years [SD=2.91], 62% female) to 103 youths with no psychiatric diagnosis (mean age, 13.4 years …

This study investigated the optimization and fabrication of soy protein isolate (SPI)-green microalga (MA) 3D-printed films. For optimizing 3D printing, the effects of MA concentration, nozzle size (0.52-0.81 mm), and speed (10-20 mm/s) were examined. The printed films were then dried, and color, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, structure, and antioxidant activity were analyzed. All the formulations showed shear-thinning behavior and rapid recovery. The concentration of 3 % MA, nozzle size of 0.72 mm, and printing speed of 20 mm/s were selected as the optimized conditions for the best 3D printability. Compared with the control, their elongation at break decreased …

Low crude protein (CP) diets can improve feed efficiency and reduce ammonia emissions, but negative impacts on broiler productivity can occur. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplementation in low CP diets on productivity, enzyme activity, neuropeptidergic gene expression, and behavior of broilers. A total of 360 male Ross 308 broilers were used in a factorial design experiment with two CP levels (19.5 and 18.0%) and three GABA levels (0, 100, and 200 mg/kg). Dietary CP and GABA levels did not significantly affect broiler productivity (P>0.05). Reducing CP in the diet increased amylase and …
Small Mammal Communities Within And Land Coverage Around Southwestern Missouri Prairies, Kaitlyn J. Bebensee
Small Mammal Communities Within And Land Coverage Around Southwestern Missouri Prairies, Kaitlyn J. Bebensee
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Land alterations can reduce the amount of suitable habitat necessary for persistence of an associated species. Within such constrained habitats, limited resources may elicit competition, which could cause shifts in abundance and occurrence of species. Missouri prairies have been declining in size, making it imperative to collect reference data on mammal populations within and land use types around remnants. For this study, I trapped small mammals in Southwestern Missouri prairies because they can be indicators of environmental health and can vary in abundance between prairies. I focus on the diet of two dominant small mammals, Peromyscus maniculatus and Microtus ochrogaster …
Genomic Signatures Of Decline And Recovery In An Endangered Bat, Myotis Grisescens, Marxe Altman-Orbach
Genomic Signatures Of Decline And Recovery In An Endangered Bat, Myotis Grisescens, Marxe Altman-Orbach
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Tremendous population declines may result in the loss of genetic diversity, which can, in turn, lead to reduced adaptive potential, overexpression of deleterious phenotypes, and further population declines. In this way, genetic drift from a severe demographic decline may ultimately lead to an extinction vortex. However, populations that avoid the loss of genetic diversity may remain viable, despite demographic crashes. Therefore, understanding genetic diversity is vital for assessing the conservation status of species that have undergone declines, and can even reflect the effectiveness of management actions. I investigated signatures of genetic bottlenecks in the gray bat (Myotis grisescens), …
United States Mainstream Meat Market Entry: An Analysis On Speciality Goat Meat Products, Madison Raye Schmitz
United States Mainstream Meat Market Entry: An Analysis On Speciality Goat Meat Products, Madison Raye Schmitz
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Understanding consumers' perspectives and motivations is key when looking into making goat meat more accepted in the mainstream meat market. Previous research has shown there is a demand for goat meat from different populations in the US. Consumers also care more about the quality of the food they purchase. Understanding that goat meat has lower cholesterol and is leaner than other red meat is important to incorporating goat meat in niche consumer markets. Providing consumers with a product that is familiar to them is more acceptable than giving consumers a cut of meat they are unfamiliar with. Standard products like …
Eastern Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger) Occupancy In A Southern Missouri Woodland, Daniel Garten
Eastern Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger) Occupancy In A Southern Missouri Woodland, Daniel Garten
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Species occupancy, which relates the probability of presence of a species at a specific place and time, is an important component of conservation and wildlife management. Principally it is used for estimation of a species’ distribution as well as understanding species interactions and quantifying environmental effects. The purpose of this study was to analyze occupancy of the Eastern Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger) across multiple seasons (2019–2022) at Bull Shoals Field Station (BSFS), and to identify potential covariates associated with detection and colonization. Data were drawn from camera trap surveys from 26 sites during summer and fall seasons. Multi-season occupancy models …
31p Solution Nmr Investigation Of Abasic Dna, Clarissa R. Krimmel
31p Solution Nmr Investigation Of Abasic Dna, Clarissa R. Krimmel
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Base excision repair (BER) mechanisms fix single base lesions in DNA, such as T:G mismatches. During the base excision repair mechanism, an abasic site (AP site) is formed as an intermediate. AP sites are unstable and highly mutagenic; they can stop DNA replication. This research investigates how the conformational properties of abasic sites in DNA affect the binding recognition of enzymes involved in DNA repair mechanisms, including BER. Three different abasic sequences are being analyzed for this research project. A second project looks at the effects of a naturally occurring purine derivative, hypoxanthine, on the DNA backbone. These hypoxanthine lesions …
Remediation Impacts Metal Concentrations And Metal Tolerant Bacteria In Soils Of The Missouri Tri-State Mining District, Ophelia R. Pettington
Remediation Impacts Metal Concentrations And Metal Tolerant Bacteria In Soils Of The Missouri Tri-State Mining District, Ophelia R. Pettington
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
After over 100 years of Zn and Pb mining in the Tri-State mining district (TSMD), former mines continue to be sources of metals. Metal contaminated soils can be remediated using plant-microbe interactions. Plants manipulate their microbiome and recruit microbes to increase metal tolerance. Remediating bacteria are site-specific and identifying native microbes can accelerate remediation efforts. Studies relating microbes and metal concentrations in remediated areas in the TSMD are scarce. I collected root and bulk zone soils associated with Andropogon virginicus from remediated and non-remediated sites in Webb City, MO. I used 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to evaluate the bacterial …
The Effect Of Sex On A-To-I Editing In Skeletal Muscle During Inflammation, Skyler Lee
The Effect Of Sex On A-To-I Editing In Skeletal Muscle During Inflammation, Skyler Lee
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Adenosine-to-inosine (A-to-I) RNA editing is a post-transcriptional mechanism mediated by ADAR enzymes that can alter RNA sequence, protein function, and gene regulation. Because ADAR1 is upregulated during inflammation and plays a critical role in innate immunity, previous studies investigated the effects of acute inflammation on RNA editing in male and female mice. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to induce inflammation, and RNA editing levels were examined in the heart, brain, and skeletal muscle. While editing levels in the heart and brain remained unchanged, skeletal muscle exhibited tissue- and sex-specific differences in editing. In this thesis, LPS treatment affected selective editing, increasing …
American Elderberry's Next Top Pollinator: Evaluating The Role Of Arthropods In Pollination, Jenny K. Burrow
American Elderberry's Next Top Pollinator: Evaluating The Role Of Arthropods In Pollination, Jenny K. Burrow
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
American elderberry (Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis) is a woody deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. In addition to its long history of use by indigenous peoples, there is renewed interest in cultivating and consuming American elderberry, primarily driven by expanding health supplement markets. Despite recent advances in horticultural development of American elderberry, its pollination ecology remains poorly understood. In this field study, I evaluated the contribution of arthropod visitors to pollination of American elderberry. To do this, I first characterized the identities and abundances of arthropod visitors via timed arthropod collections and floral observations during peak flowering …

Does Phytase Change How We Feed Breeders?, Wenting Li
Does Phytase Change How We Feed Breeders?, Wenting Li
Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference
Dietary evaluation of the use of exogenous phytase has received considerable attention in broilers, but not broiler breeders. Moreover, the limited studies that have assessed phytase in broiler breeders are dated, which makes interpretation problematic because dated phytase enzymes are not as efficacious as current phytase enzymes. The article addressed practical applications for dietary phytase in broiler breeder diets.

Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) experience increased risk of heart failure. Malondialdehyde-acetaldehyde (MAA) adducts are overexpressed and co-localize with citrullinated (CIT) proteins in RA myocardium. This study investigated whether reactive aldehyde species (RASP) inhibitors prevent MAA formation in vitro and attenuate cardiac dysfunction in a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse model. Among eight RASP inhibitors screened, ADX-246 demonstrated the greatest inhibition of MAA formation in vitro. Mice with early CIA (week 5) exhibited elevated levels of myocardial MAA adducts, myocardial inflammation, and reduced ejection fraction, but normal cardiac collagen deposition and diastolic function vs. control. By weeks 10-12, mice with chronic …

Amphibians are highly sensitive to habitat disturbance because of their permeable skin and reliance on both aquatic and terrestrial environments. To evaluate how human-driven land-use change affects a forest-stream amphibian, we analysed long-term population dynamics of Rana uenoi in the Gayasan region of South Korea, with a focus on breeding habitats. Between 2007 and 2023, annual egg-mass surveys were conducted at 14 breeding sites, and land-use composition was extracted each year within a 500 m buffer from national geospatial databases. Land-use categories were reclassified into ecologically relevant groups (breeding, high-quality, low-quality and non-living/high-mortality habitats) and their areas were quantified for …

Restoring large carnivores to human-dominated landscapes remains ecologically and socially contentious, though reintroduction may offer important benefits where coexistence is possible. Yet, efforts to reintroduce cougars (Puma concolor) and red wolves (Canis rufus) in the Eastern U.S. face major challenges, largely due to human-caused mortality and opposition. We employed the hazard acceptance model and structural equation modeling to investigate the socio-psychological drivers of public support for reintroduction. Survey data were collected from residents of the Eastern U.S. for cougars (n = 2665) and red wolves (n = 3825). For both species, support was positively associated with perceived personal and societal …

Physical Activity And Health Outcomes In Children With Dyslexia During Summer Versus School Months, Tina J. Glatz
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Children in the United States continue to experience rising rates of overweight and obesity. Children with learning disabilities are twice as likely to have obesity than typically developing peers, partly due to difficulties with motor skills and behavior regulation. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare differences in health outcomes and physical activity (PA) during summer versus school months in children with dyslexia, using a within- subject study design.
At three timepoints (May, August, December 2025), children’s height, weight, and fitness were measured via a portable stadiometer, dual-frequency foot-to-foot bioelectric impedance device, and Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance …

The functioning of high-diversity ecosystems, such as coral reefs, is intrinsically tied to the integrity and efficiency of the trophic pathways within these systems. Coral reef productivity depends, in part, on the input of external nutrients, primarily zooplankton, that is assimilated by extraordinarily diverse fish communities. The plankton–planktivore trophic pathway is thus crucial for sustaining the productivity that exemplifies coral reef ecosystems; however, it remains poorly understood at large spatial scales. Here we explore global patterns in reef fish community structure, revealing a major discrepancy between the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean in the productivity and fisheries potential of planktivorous reef fishes. …

Marine heatwaves, and other extreme climatic events, are driving mass mortality of habitat-forming species and substantial ecological change worldwide. However, habitat fragmentation is rarely considered despite its role in structuring seascapes and potential to exacerbate the negative impacts of habitat loss. Here, we quantify fragmentation of globally significant seagrass meadows within the Shark Bay World Heritage Area before and after an unprecedented marine heatwave impacting the Western Australian coastline over the austral summer of 2010/11. We use a spatial pattern index to quantify seagrass fragmentation from satellite-derived habitat maps (2002, 2010, 2014 and 2016), assess potential predictors of fragmentation and …

Crustose coralline algae (CCA) play a central role in coral reef framework consolidation and vertical accretion, yet their contribution to reef-scale calcification remains poorly quantified, particularly on reefs dominated by algal turfs. We examined how CCA calcification rates differed across ten reef sites with varying benthic composition around Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Using tiles from calcification accretion units (CAUs), we quantified CCA carbonate production on light-exposed tile surfaces and related these rates to CCA cover and the Epilithic Algal Ratio (i.e. the spectrum of algal states from CCA to turf dominance), quantified on both tiles and the adjacent …
