Determining Hand-Harvest Parameters And Postharvest Marketability Impacts Of Fresh-Market Blackberries To Develop A Soft-Robotic Gripper For Robotic Harvesting, Andrea Lea Myers, Anthony Gunderman, Renee Threlfall, Yue Chen

Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hand-harvesting parameters and postharvest marketability attributes of fresh-market blackberries (Rubus L. subgenus Rubus Watson) were characterized to develop a prototype for a soft-robotic gripper for robotic harvesting. A custom-made, force-sensing apparatus attached to the thumb and fingers of a person hand-harvesting blackberries was developed to quantify forces used to harvest and to identify appendages for harvesting. Four cultivars of blackberries grown in Arkansas were harvested at optimal ripeness and stored at 2 °C for 21 days to determine the impact on marketability attributes (leakage, decay, and red drupelet reversion). The forces during harvest imparted by the thumb and middle …

Invasive mice (Mus spp.) can negatively impact island species and ecosystems. Because fewer island rodent eradications have been attempted for mice compared to rats (Rattus spp.), less is known about efficacy and palatability of rodenticide baits for mouse eradications. We performed a series of bait acceptance and efficacy cage trials using a standard formulation of brodifacoum-based rodenticide on wild-caught mice from Sand Island, Midway Atoll, to help inform a proposed eradication there. Mice were offered ad libitum brodifacoum pellets along with various alternative food sources, and a “no choice” treatment group received only bait pellets. Mortality in the no choice …

Metabolic Signatures Of Kin Recognition In The Model Angiosperm Arabidopsis Thaliana, Thiara Siqueira Bento May 2022

Metabolic Signatures Of Kin Recognition In The Model Angiosperm Arabidopsis Thaliana, Thiara Siqueira Bento

Theses and Dissertations

Many organisms have evolved to identify and respond to differences in genetic relatedness between conspecifics, allowing them to select between competitive and facilitative strategies to improve fitness. Due to their sessile nature, plants frequently draw from the same pool of nutrients, and the ability to limit competition between closely related conspecifics would be advantageous. Over the last 3 decades, significant evidence has accumulated in multiple species that such ‘kin recognition’ (KR) is indeed commonplace in plants. I propose that if KR has evolved, at least in part, as a plant-plant interaction to regulate nutrient uptake, then nutrients should modulate the …

PURPOSE: The Mayo-Baylor RIGHT 10K Study enabled preemptive, sequence-based pharmacogenomics (PGx)-driven drug prescribing practices in routine clinical care within a large cohort. We also generated the tools and resources necessary for clinical PGx implementation and identified challenges that need to be overcome. Furthermore, we measured the frequency of both common genetic variation for which clinical guidelines already exist and rare variation that could be detected by DNA sequencing, rather than genotyping.

METHODS: Targeted oligonucleotide-capture sequencing of 77 pharmacogenes was performed using DNA from 10,077 consented Mayo Clinic Biobank volunteers. The resulting predicted drug response-related phenotypes for 13 genes, including CYP2D6 …

Nanotechnology-Based Approaches To Mitigate Environmental Pollutants -- Induced Neurological Disorders, Jyoti Ahlawat May 2022

Nanotechnology-Based Approaches To Mitigate Environmental Pollutants -- Induced Neurological Disorders, Jyoti Ahlawat

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimerâ??s Disease (AD) and Huntingtonâ??s Disease (HD) have no cure despite intensive research efforts geared towards therapeutics development. In the USA, patients with PD and AD alone cost the nation ~ $200 billion annually in patient care and lost productivity. Therefore, there remains an urgent and unmet need to develop novel drugs and drug carriers with the potential to slow down, halt and ideally reverse the course of neurodegenerative disorders. The dissertation focuses on developing approaches towards targeting PD using multifactorial mechanisms including the targeting of protein aggregation and oxidative stress. This is …

C-C Chemokine Receptor 7 (CCR7) in T-ALL is used during disease progression, and may lead to migration of cancerous cells into the Central Nervous System (CNS) of patients. Goals and Objectives: This project aims to find relevant rates and risk factors for T-ALL for the Hispanic population in the US/Mexico border region. The other aim is to assess the effect of the G protein-coupled Receptor Kinase 4 (GRK-4) family proteins on migration and receptor internalization through CCR7 …

Small Heat Shock Protein 27 And Its Role In Human Disease, Bianka Andrea Holguin May 2022

Small Heat Shock Protein 27 And Its Role In Human Disease, Bianka Andrea Holguin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Small heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27) is a ubiquitously expressed molecular chaperone with roles in many physiological processes. As an ATP-independent molecular chaperone, Hsp27 protects substrates from irreversible aggregation and holds them in a folding competent state for later recycling into the proteome. Hsp27 proteins form dimers that are assembled into large oligomeric complexes. Phosphorylation of Hsp27 dissembles the oligomers into chaperone active dimers. Several missense mutations of Hsp27 are causative for the neurodegenerative disorders Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal Hereditary Motor Neuropathy IIB. Here I show that the oligomerization and chaperoning ability of Hsp27 are altered by the Hsp27 …

The Electrostatic Features Of Dengue Virus Capsid Assembly, Alan Eduardo Lopez Hernandez May 2022

The Electrostatic Features Of Dengue Virus Capsid Assembly, Alan Eduardo Lopez Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Dengue virus causes serious diseases and considerable deaths each year all around the globe. Dengue virus undergoes assembly in a capsid, matures and becomes viral. Revealing mechanisms of the viral capsid protein may lead to the discovery of novel drugs that prevent this assembly to happen and stop the virus from spreading. Here I present a computational work which is focused on the stability and assembly of the dengue viral capsid. The E and M proteins conform a heterotetramer, which consists of two copies of E and M proteins. The heterotetramers form a highly ordered capsid. In the electrostatic analysis …

The Mobility And Cognitive Mechanisms Involved In Altering Gait Speed In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Alyssa Olivas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Autism is a socio-behavioral disorder, and diagnoses are conducted through behavioral screening instruments. Recent research suggests motor deficits may be a core symptom of the disorder, as children with autism present with deficits in motor development, locomotor skills, and postural instability. In addition, children with autism often have affected, executive function, attention, and perception cognitive domains. Different gait speeds have been used to examine gait adaptations in other clinical populations. Additionally, individuals with decreased cognitive abilities have demonstrated difficulties in modulating their walking speed. There is limited research on mechanisms children with autism use to alter their gait speed, or …

Understanding The Role Of Small Mammals In Arctic Biogeochemical Cycling, Austin Roy May 2022

Understanding The Role Of Small Mammals In Arctic Biogeochemical Cycling, Austin Roy

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Small mammals play an integral role in their ecosystems. This is especially true in northern ecosystems, where small mammals represent both top-down and bottom-up forces and can have strong effects on ecosystem function through affecting biogeochemical cycling. Despite these important effects, the role of small mammals in influencing biogeochemical cycling has been largely underappreciated in the understanding of arctic ecosystems, leading to a call to better understand how small mammal herbivores impact ecosystem processes including carbon cycling. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to assess how biogeochemical cycling is affected by small mammal herbivore presence, behavior, and population dynamics …

Mapping Salt-Affected Land In The South-West Of Western Australia Using Satellite Remote Sensing, P A. Caccetta, John A. Simons, S Furby, Nicholas J. Wright, Richard J. George Dr

Natural resources published reports

Dryland salinity is a pervasive form of land degradation that has resulted from the clearing of about 17 M ha of native vegetation and the introduction of predominately cereal and pasture-based farming systems in the South-West of Western Australia. The change in water balance caused by clearing deep rooted endemic woodlands increased recharge and resulted in rising groundwater levels. After a lag period, the regolith began filling and groundwater approached the soil surface, evaporating and depositing stored salts in the rootzone of salt sensitive crops. Groundwater levels also rise and affect areas of remnant native vegetation, streams, wet-lands and rural …

A Most Unusual Tail: Scoliosis In A Wild Australian Skink, And Reported Incidences And Suggested Causes Of Similar Malformations Amongst Squamates, Philip W. Bateman, Robyn Benken, Ryan Glowacki, Robert A. Davis

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Malformations of vertebrae potentially occur across many taxa, particularly in Testudines, which are susceptible to kyphosis (dorsoventral curvature of the spine). Such malformations may stem from either genetic or environmental origins, and their prevalence and associated impacts on survival remain poorly understood. However, scoliosis (sideways curvature of the spine) is rarely reported and especially so in wild lizards. We report here on the first known case of scoliosis in a wild Australian lizard, the skink Ctenotus fallens, from Perth, Western Australia. This occurrence is the first of 805 individuals captured in a natural population monitored annually for the past 11 …
