Development Of An Egg-Specific Mass Spectrometry Targeted Method For Processed Food Matrices, Liyun Zhang
Development Of An Egg-Specific Mass Spectrometry Targeted Method For Processed Food Matrices, Liyun Zhang
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Egg is a major food allergen in the United States, causing symptoms from mild reactions to severe anaphylaxis. An egg-free diet remains the only management approach for egg allergy. Therefore, individuals and families living with egg allergies rely heavily on allergen statements on packaged food products for informed food choices. Currently, no labeling regulations exist for unintentionally introduced allergens, posing risks to consumers with egg allergies. Therefore, it is critical to have an accurate and reliable detection method in allergen control and management to determine the concentration of total protein from allergenic food sources. Traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays are routinely …
Phylogenetic And Biogeographic Patterns Of Devonian Proetid Trilobites, Katherine Jane Jordan
Phylogenetic And Biogeographic Patterns Of Devonian Proetid Trilobites, Katherine Jane Jordan
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Ecological disruption events such as mass extinctions can result in the permanent alteration in clades and ecosystems. A pivotal time of change during the history of life on Earth can be seen in the Devonian Period. During this time, major transitions in marine and terrestrial system resulted in a different world at the end of the period in comparison to the beginning. One such group most heavily impacted were trilobites. Trilobites were reduced to one order by the end of the Devonian: Proetida. My dissertation focuses on phylogenetic, biogeographic, and paleocommunity patterns of this group, known as the last of …

The Benefits Of Biofouling – Promoting The Growth Of Benthic Organisms To Enhance Ecosystem Services, Kailey Nicole Richard, Kelli Z. Hunsucker, Travis J. Hunsucker, Geoffrey Swain
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Student Publications
For the marine industry biofouling has a negative reputation. On ship hulls, the accumulation of these unwanted plants and animals can lead to increased drag, fuel consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Offshore platforms are also subject to biofouling which can result in corrosion and hydrodynamic loading, thus shortening their lifespan. While the harmful impacts of biofouling are commonly reported throughout the literature, biofouling can also benefit both aquatic and human populations. Common biofouling organisms act as natural filtration systems, thus improving water quality. Many of the same flora and fauna serve as a food source, and structures could be designed …
Uncovering The Hidden Diversity Of Antibody Heavy Chains And Their Implications For Autoantibody Mediated Disease., Easton Earl Ford
Uncovering The Hidden Diversity Of Antibody Heavy Chains And Their Implications For Autoantibody Mediated Disease., Easton Earl Ford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the diversity of antibody (IG) molecules at the DNA and RNA level is imperative for understanding immunological processes and disease. Much of the work to uncover IG diversity has been focused on diversity in the variable region of the IG molecule which is crucial for antigen binding. However, the diversity of the constant region responsible for the functions of IG has largely been ignored in the field of immunogenetics. The work presented in this thesis challenges the dogma that the constant region is invariant in terms of genetic diversity. In this thesis we present the development of a long-read …
Molecular Mechanisms Of Exercise-Stimulated Resolution Of Inflammation And Its Dietary Dependence., Ernesto H. Pena Calderin
Molecular Mechanisms Of Exercise-Stimulated Resolution Of Inflammation And Its Dietary Dependence., Ernesto H. Pena Calderin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diet-induced obesity and adipose tissue (AT) inflammation that ensues sets the stage for systemic metabolic inflammation, disrupted insulin signaling, and eventual type 2 diabetes (T2D) development. At the center of this pathology lies a disruption in endogenous inflammation resolution pathways characterized by an imbalance in lipid mediator production (greater abundance of pro-inflammatory to pro-resolving lipids). Additionally, obese states are characterized by adrenergic deficiency, especially in response to physical activity. Inflammatory processes have been experimentally mitigated by either the pharmacological inhibition of pro-inflammatory signals (i.e., Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and its receptor BLT1, which establishes a potent chemotactic stimulus …
Epidural Stimulation For Urogenital Dysfunction In The Spinal Cord Injured Rat., Natasha Lorraine Wilkins
Epidural Stimulation For Urogenital Dysfunction In The Spinal Cord Injured Rat., Natasha Lorraine Wilkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating, life changing event that greatly impacts quality of life. SCI can have body-wide, multi-system consequences including dysfunction within the urogenital system. Challenges with the urinary system include urinary incontinence, urine retention, and detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia all of which require maintenance through the regular use of catheters. Sexual dysfunction in men, who comprise nearly 80% of the SCI population, includes erectile dysfunction, anejaculation, retrograde ejaculation, poor expulsive force during ejaculation, and poor sperm quality. The treatment for sexual function in SCI men is focused more on fertility through the collection of sperm for insemination procedures …
Establishing A Mouse Model Of Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment., Dana K. Oakes
Establishing A Mouse Model Of Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment., Dana K. Oakes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cerebral/cortical visual impairment (CVI) is a disorder most often caused by perinatal hypoxic injury to the developing brain. CVI is the leading cause of childhood visual impairment in developed nations, encompassing deficits in many aspects of vision including visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and object recognition. The pathophysiology of CVI is not well understood because no animal model currently exists to study this disorder. Because there is no animal model, the pathophysiology of CVI is poorly understood. Here, we developed a murine early postnatal hypoxic model of CVI by exposing mice to 9.5% O2 at postnatal day (P)3 for a …
Effects Of A Protection Zone In A Reaction-Diffusion Model With Shifting Bounded Habitat And Allee Effect., Davis Henderson
Effects Of A Protection Zone In A Reaction-Diffusion Model With Shifting Bounded Habitat And Allee Effect., Davis Henderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We consider a reaction-diffusion equation that models a population in a shifting bounded habitat with a protection zone and the Allee effect. We assume that the population growth function exhibits the strong Allee effect and has a positive integral within the protection zone (indicating population persistence) and a negative integral in the surrounding patches (indicating population decay). We prove that the existence of steady-state solutions to this system depends on the length of the protection zone. It is demonstrated that there exists some value H* such that, for a protection zone of size H*, there exists a solution and, for …

Industrial Applications Of Molecular Techniques., Jesse Lee Rozsa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multidisciplinary research is vital in modern science. Combining molecular genetics with engineering disciplines such as material science, robotics, or 3D printing is not a new concept but one that can continue to lead to breakthroughs that will benefit society. Science does not and should not occur in a vacuum, and, in early 2020, the world saw the emergence of a pandemic that shifted the focus of scientific research for a time. This manuscript describes aspects of this journey and the fruit that was born from this historic event. In this dissertation, we used plants and bacteria to produce compounds that …
The Role Of Forest Disturbance And Habitat Characteristics In Shaping Arthropod Ecology., Kane Alec Lawhorn
The Role Of Forest Disturbance And Habitat Characteristics In Shaping Arthropod Ecology., Kane Alec Lawhorn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Disturbances in forests often generate dead wood, which is an important resource for a variety of arthropods. In tropical wet forests where fire is rare, lightning and branchfalls are common disturbances that create canopy gaps with associated large amounts of localized dead wood. By contrast, prescribed fire is a common disturbance in temperate forest that creates habitat heterogeneity and widely dispersed dead wood resources. The ecological effects of these disturbances on arthropod communities are largely unknown. This dissertation investigates how disturbance and habitat associations in both tropical and temperate forest shape arthropod ecology. Throughout, I primarily focus on beetles, ants, …
Emotional Content In Working Memory Processes: An Fmri Study., Manal Zafar
Emotional Content In Working Memory Processes: An Fmri Study., Manal Zafar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Working memory (WM) is a dynamic system that processes and manipulates both goal-relevant and goal-irrelevant information, integral to higher-level cognition and executive control (Fujii, 2001; Nyberg & Erikkson, 2016). The processing and manipulation of representations is modulated by the affective nature of the information (Pessoa, 2009) such that negative information can either impair or enhance WM processing. WM impairments are seen commonly across clinical disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and schizophrenia (Levens & Gotlib, 2010; Joorman et a., 2011; Brodziak et al., 2015). Specifically, negative information is known to have differential processing in WM compared to neutral and positive …
Assessing The Impacts Of Soil Arthropods On Geochemical Transformations., Thomas Blake Hudson
Assessing The Impacts Of Soil Arthropods On Geochemical Transformations., Thomas Blake Hudson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis contains four individual chapters, two of which highlight studies assessing how arthropods contribute and drive geochemical transformations by directly and indirectly manipulating the availability of anoxic conditions. The first chapter serves as an introduction to the literature on the subject to contextualize the work carried out in later chapters. The second chapter is a field study conducted throughout the summer of 2023 in a lowland tropical rainforest in Costa Rica, where I characterized the temporal and environmental variation impacting greenhouse gas emissions from the nests of leaf-cutting ants (Atta cephalotes). From flux measurements taken across 29 …
Soil Additives And Alternative Crops For Drought Defense In The Intermountain West, Tina M. Sullivan
Soil Additives And Alternative Crops For Drought Defense In The Intermountain West, Tina M. Sullivan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The Western U.S. looks for water optimization and conservation as agriculture is the largest water diverter, and resources are pressured by urban growth, winter snowpack instability, and drought persistence. Agricultural producers have several potential options to optimize water use with different investments associated with them. Options with varying levels of risks and known management practices include alternative crops, soil wetting agents, and crop biologicals.
An alternative crop that grew incredibly fast in popularity was industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) despite limited agronomic knowledge for best management practices. Field trials occurred (2020-2022) near Logan, UT to test a total of …

Thiol Dough Conditioners Impact On The Formation Of Advanced Glycation End-Products In Bagels Containing Sunflower Seed Flour, Alton Chambers
Food Science (MS) Theses
Baking bagels can increase advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are linked to increased metabolic and chronic diseases. This research correlated color and the proximate composition with fluorescent AGEs in bagels containing 0-20% sunflower flour (SFF) and 0-90 ppm L-cysteine (Cys) or Glutathione (GSH). No significant differences were observed in the moisture and lipid content for the bagel crust and crumb. Carbohydrate content decreased, while protein and ash content significantly increased when the SFF increased from 0 to 20 % SFF. The pH of the crust and crumb increased from 5.27 to 6.01 and 5.33 to 6.09, respectively, when sunflower …

Comparison Of Chlorophyll, Carotenoid, And Alpha-Tocopherol In E-Beam, Gamma, And X-Ray Treated 'Granny Smith' Apples, Manju Meena Vetrivelayutham
Food Science (MS) Theses
This study aimed to investigate the impact of phytosanitary radiation modality on the lipophilic antioxidants in peels of ‘Granny Smith’ apples. Freshly harvested ‘Granny Smith’ apples were treated with gamma (0.2 kGy), X-ray (0.495 kGy), and e-beam (0.77 kGy) radiation and stored in air at 1 ⁰C for up to four months. Non-irradiated apples were used as control fruit. Peels of irradiated and non-irradiated apples were collected and quantified for chlorophyll, carotenoids, alpha-tocopherol, and antioxidant capacity. The results indicated that gamma irradiation significantly reduced the chlorophyll content by 76% but did not impact X-ray and e-beam-treated apple peels, even though …
Value Of Macroalgae As Habitat In A Eutrophic Coastal Bay, Dominika Polchowska
Value Of Macroalgae As Habitat In A Eutrophic Coastal Bay, Dominika Polchowska
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Eutrophication is a phenomenon caused by changes in nutrient loading that results in harmful algal blooms, an overgrowth of macroalgae, altered aquatic benthic invertebrate communities, and loss of ecosystem functions. Barnegat Bay, NJ is a highly eutrophic system that has experienced a substantial loss of seagrass beds with subsequent expansion of drift macroalgae. Although considered poor quality, these algal beds represent valuable habitat for many benthic invertebrates. This research assesses the value of macroalgae as a habitat for macrofauna in regions where macroalgae are the dominant “vegetation.” Benthic drift algal samples were collected during June and August 2023 to reflect …
Partial Immunity To Mycoplasma Gallisepticum After An Initial Infection Is Long-Lasting And Reduces Transmission In Flocks Of Canaries, Madeline Sudnick
Partial Immunity To Mycoplasma Gallisepticum After An Initial Infection Is Long-Lasting And Reduces Transmission In Flocks Of Canaries, Madeline Sudnick
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pathology during a second infection can be influenced by immunity and an increase in resistance or tolerance of individuals. Population-level differences in the ability to maintain immunity can lead to contrasting survival outcomes between groups and determine how future outbreaks will spread. However, long term wildlife disease surveillance can be challenging due to lack of infrastructure and host-pathogen specific tests. Calculating disease transmission likelihood requires understanding individual-level heterogeneity in pathology and behavior, and there is limited knowledge in understanding how populations in different stages of an epidemic will transmit disease. In Chapter I, we aim to help fill a gap …
Effects Of Land Cover And Land Change On Monarch Butterfly Presence Across The Conus, Chris R. Burkhart
Effects Of Land Cover And Land Change On Monarch Butterfly Presence Across The Conus, Chris R. Burkhart
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The decline of monarch butterfly populations (Danaus plexippus L.) over the past four decades, particularly in their overwintering habitats, has raised concerns about the species' conservation. Habitat loss and modification, particularly within the contiguous United States, are attributed as one of the key drivers of this decline. However, the specific impact of land use and land cover (LULC) changes on monarch distributions remains inadequately documented. This study integrates monarch observations from multiple sources spanning 2008 to 2019 with LULC data to analyze the relationship between habitat configuration and monarch presence. Using a randomized grid sampling approach, habitat configuration metrics were …
Influence Of Invasive Species, Drought, And Stream Permanence On Stream Crayfish Species With A Focus On The Imperiled Mammoth Spring Crayfish (Faxonius Marchandi), Leah Marie Bayer
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Freshwater crayfish constitute one of the most-threatened taxonomic groups in North America. Invasion by other crayfish species as well as habitat degradation through alteration of natural flow regime are two of the most prominent threats to crayfish persistence. Additionally, extreme weather events like droughts can amplify threats posed by other stressors on crayfish populations and are expected to increase in frequency, magnitude, and/or duration in the future, which may negatively influence narrow-ranged endemic crayfish populations typical of the Southeast. The Mammoth Spring Crayfish, Faxonius marchandi, is a narrow-ranged endemic that occurs in the Spring River drainage of Arkansas and Missouri …

Atypical Responses To Sensory Stimuli Or Eating Environments In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lydia Rockers
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often encounter challenges in processing sensory inputs. Children with ASD may experience feeding difficulties and over- or under- stimulation during food-related activities such as eating or shopping. These have impacts on the health and well-being of individuals with ASD in childhood and throughout their lives. Further research is needed to address the impact of ambient sound levels in a retail or restaurant setting. The main objective of this thesis was to address these gaps by identifying responses to various environmental and food related stimuli. The findings of this research addressed differences in responses between …
Evaluation Of A Capsule Suspension Formulation Of S-Metolachlor For Use In Fenclorim-Treated Rice And Wheat, Samuel Charles Noe
Evaluation Of A Capsule Suspension Formulation Of S-Metolachlor For Use In Fenclorim-Treated Rice And Wheat, Samuel Charles Noe
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The continued evolution of herbicide resistance is one of the primary concerns facing Arkansas growers today. Problematic weeds such as barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.] and Italian ryegrass [Lolium perenne L. ssp. multiflorum (Lam.) Husnot] have evolved resistance to some of the most used herbicides in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). To counteract this resistance, alternative herbicide sites of action should be explored. S-metolachlor is a very-long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA)-inhibiting herbicide [Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC)/Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) Group 15] commonly used in U.S. row crops to control grasses and small-seeded broadleaf weeds. …
The Influence Of Commercial Salmonella Vaccination Programs On Local- And Systemic-Immune Responses And Ceca Microbiome In Egg-Type Chickens, Chrysta Noelle Beck
The Influence Of Commercial Salmonella Vaccination Programs On Local- And Systemic-Immune Responses And Ceca Microbiome In Egg-Type Chickens, Chrysta Noelle Beck
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Salmonella vaccination is a widely accepted practice in the United States poultry industry. These vaccines stimulate a strong humoral response to Salmonella serovars and significantly reduce Salmonella load in the bird. In general, a Salmonella vaccination program for an egg-type pullet flock consists of two administrations of a live attenuated Salmonella vaccine at 1- and 6-wk-of-age followed by one administration of a Salmonella bacterin at 12-wk-of-age. Although these vaccines are regarded as effective against paratyphoid Salmonella infections, there are incidences of breakthrough Salmonella infections and severe injection site reactions after bacterin administration. Therefore, the main objective of this dissertation was …
Local And Systemic Inflammatory And Antibody Responses To Salmonella-Killed Vaccines In Egg-Type Pullets, Jossie Mair Santamaria Archbold
Local And Systemic Inflammatory And Antibody Responses To Salmonella-Killed Vaccines In Egg-Type Pullets, Jossie Mair Santamaria Archbold
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Salmonella infection in chickens is a significant and complex challenge to manage, affecting poultry health and food safety. Vaccination against Salmonella is a promising preventative approach to control flock infection and decrease the loads of this pathogen. Vaccination strategies against Salmonella often comprise the application of live attenuated and killed (inactivated) vaccines, including inactivated autogenous vaccines. Live attenuated Salmonella vaccines stimulate both cellular and humoral immunity but can potentially return to a virulent state; meanwhile, inactivated Salmonella vaccines trigger more of a humoral response and are safer since they are entirely rendered inactive. However, there is a lack of information …

Aging Antiviral Immunity In The Central Nervous System: Mechanisms And Implications, Artem D. Arutyunov
Aging Antiviral Immunity In The Central Nervous System: Mechanisms And Implications, Artem D. Arutyunov
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The complex interplay between aging, neuroinflammation, and neuroimmune responses has become increasingly evident in recent years. Microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), play a pivotal role in maintaining neural homeostasis and responding to neuroinflammatory triggers. This dissertation focuses on the role that aging plays in microglial activation and neuroinflammation, specifically in the context of West Nile Virus (WNV) encephalitis. While the incidence of WNV is consistent across age groups, the risk of West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease (WNND), a serious complication of WNV infection, increases with advanced age. Using mouse models of WNV infection, our group …

Epigenetic Dynamics In Zebrafish Development And Regeneration, Yujie Chen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the mechanisms that underlie cell fate and status decisions remains a complex task in biological research. Despite sharing identical genetic content, cells can differentiate into diverse types or remain in different statuses based on epigenetic dynamics. Here, I have structured my thesis into two distinct but interconnected parts, each focusing on a specific aspect of epigenetic control during zebrafish development and regeneration. The first part of the thesis focuses on the differentiation of pigment cells from neural crest cells to understand how the same progenitor cell population can bifurcate into two different pigment cell lineages. Through a comprehensive analysis …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) stands as a daunting global health challenge, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. This burden will only intensify with an aging global population. Despite significant advances in understanding AD, further exploration is needed to enhance the development of treatments and therapeutics. Particularly, I am interested in identifying the molecular pathways involved and the cell types mediating the etiology of AD. This work underscores the ability of single nucleus RNA-seq to investigate these pathways at the cell-type level and mitigate many of the hurdles limiting the successful development of treatments for AD, including genetic heterogeneity and translation of discoveries …
Microbial Transfer And Cross-Contamination In Milling Facilities And Pathogen Survival In Milled Products And Baking Mixes, Aryany Leticia Peña-Gomez
Microbial Transfer And Cross-Contamination In Milling Facilities And Pathogen Survival In Milled Products And Baking Mixes, Aryany Leticia Peña-Gomez
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wheat-based products, traditionally considered low-risk due to their low moisture content, have been involved in numerous foodborne outbreaks in recent decades. Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) present in these products have caused significant numbers of hospitalizations and massive product recalls. The microbiological quality of flour is highly dependent on the incoming wheat, which is vulnerable to contamination from field to milling. Once pathogens are present in flour, they can survive for extended periods. Implementing strategies to mitigate the risk of pathogen contamination throughout the wheat processing chain is critical.
This study evaluated the distribution of E. coli …
