Extraction Method Effects On Structural Properties And Functional Characteristics Of Dietary Fiber Extracted From Ginseng Residue, Xiaoyu Feng, Kashif Ameer, Karna Ramachandraiah, Guihun Jiang
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
In this research, the dietary fibers (DFs) from ginseng residue were extracted by employing three different extraction methods (alkaline: AL, acidic: AC, enzymatic: EN). The extracted DFs were characterized in terms of their structural and functional properties. The results clearly showed that, regardless of the extraction methods, all DF samples exhibited representative infrared spectral features. The DF extracted by AC (citric acid) had more porous structures with a looser configuration, in conjunction with high apparent viscosity, whereas the DF extracted by EN (α-amylase and protease) exhibited higher thermal stability. Moreover, the monosaccharide composition of the DF samples was significantly influenced …
Elucidating The Heterogeneity And Epigenetic Determinants Of Memory-Like Natural Killer Cell Differentiation, Jennifer Tran
Elucidating The Heterogeneity And Epigenetic Determinants Of Memory-Like Natural Killer Cell Differentiation, Jennifer Tran
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Natural killer (NK) cells are innate lymphoid cells that are a first line of defense against virally infected or malignant cells. Their ability to recognize and kill target cells is controlled by engagement of inhibitory, activating, and cytokine receptors. This leads to release of granules that contain perforin and granzymes, expression of death receptor ligands, and production of cytokines and chemokines. An effective NK cell response results in target cell death, along with changes in the nearby cellular microenvironment to promote immunity. As such NK cells play an essential role in tumor immunosurveillance, and there is an inverse correlation between …

Memory Modulation: Dominance Of Negative Visual Context Over Neutral Verbal Memory, Stas Kozak, Noa Herz, Maya Tocker, Yair Bar-Haim, Nitzan Censor
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Neutral memories can be modulated via intentional memory control paradigms such as directed forgetting. In addition, previous studies have shown that neutral visual memories can be modulated indirectly, via remember and forget instructions towards competing verbal memories. Here we show that direct modulation of neutral verbal memory strength is impaired by negative visual context, and that negative visual context is resistant to indirect memory modulation. Participants were directly instructed to intentionally remember or forget newly encoded neutral verbal information. Importantly, this verbal information was interleaved with embedded negative visual context. Results showed that negative visual context eliminated the well-documented effect …

Animals use sounds to communicate with each other, just like humans. Humans can listen in on animals by using a bioacoustic monitoring device, a passive device that quietly records surrounding sounds. Bioacoustic monitoring devices blend in with the environment, allowing us to know what types of animals appear when we’re gone. The device collects and stores data and allows us to visualize, analyze, and identify animals from the sounds they make.

Historically, ovarian cancer (OC) was thought to metastasize by surface-to-surface spread, but recent developments have yielded a new understanding of the paths of metastatic spread. Given the histologic and molecular heterogeneity of OC, we will focus on high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). Here, we provide a critical and more holistic view of the evidence supporting various routes of metastasis, including peritoneal, hematogenous, lymphatic, and nerve-related. Understanding the underlying mechanisms is necessary to improve treatment strategies for this challenging disease.

Background/Objectives: Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) and elevated left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP) are strong predictors of clinical outcomes across various populations. However, their diagnostic utility in embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) remains unclear. We hypothesized that LVDD with elevated LVFP (based on echocardiography) was more likely to be prevalent in ESUS compared to non-cardioembolic stroke (NCE) and to be associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) on follow-up monitoring.
Methods: This is a single-center retrospective study that included adult patients with a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke between January 2016 and June 2017. LV function was assessed by …

Nontransformed cells form heterotypic cadherin junctions with adjacent transformed cells to inhibit tumor cell growth and motility. Transformed cells must override this form of growth control, called "contact normalization", to invade and metastasize during cancer progression. Heterocellular cadherin junctions between transformed and nontransformed cells are needed for this process. However, specific mechanisms downstream of cadherin signaling have not been clearly elucidated. Here, we utilized a β-catenin reporter construct to determine if contact normalization affects Wnt signaling in transformed cells. β-catenin driven GFP expression in Src transformed mouse embryonic cells was decreased when cultured with cadherin competent nontransformed cells compared to …

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are ionotropic glutamate receptors involved in learning and memory. NMDA receptors primarily comprise two GluN1 and two GluN2 subunits. The GluN2 subunit dictates biophysical receptor properties, including the extent of receptor activation and desensitization. GluN2A- and GluN2D-containing receptors represent two functional extremes. To uncover the conformational basis of their functional divergence, we utilize single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer to probe the extracellular domains of these receptor subtypes under resting and ligand-bound conditions. We find that the conformational profile of the GluN2 amino-terminal domain correlates with the disparate functions of GluN2A- and GluN2D-containing receptors. Changes at the pre-transmembrane …

Understanding tree transpiration variability is vital for assessing ecosystem water-use efficiency and forest health amid climate change, yet most landscape-level measurements do not differentiate individual trees. Using canopy temperature data from thermal cameras, we estimated the transpiration rates of individual trees at Harvard Forest and Niwot Ridge. PT-JPL model was used to derive latent heat flux from thermal images at the canopy-level, showing strong agreement with tower measurements (R2 = 0.70–0.96 at Niwot, 0.59–0.78 at Harvard at half-hourly to monthly scales) and daily RMSE of 33.5 W/m2 (Niwot) and 52.8 W/m2 (Harvard). Tree-level analysis revealed species-specific responses to …

Drought is one of the important factors that cause a decrease in productivity and quality in plant cultivation. Stress tolerance in plants can be increased or damage can be reduced by various exogenous applications. One of them is flavonoids, which have an important role in the response to stress through changes that occur at the endogenous level in the plant due to drought stress. The effects of exogenous treatment of chrysin, a member of the flavonoid group, on tomato seedlings grown under water deficit were examined. Different doses (C0: Control with no treatment, C1: 0.1 mM, C2: 0.5 mM and …

Marine mammals are integral to global biodiversity and marine health through their roles in coastal, benthic, and pelagic ecosystems. Marine mammals face escalating threats from climate change, pollution, and human activities, which perturb their oceanic environment. The diverse biology and extreme adaptations evolved by marine mammals make them important study subjects for understanding anthropogenic pressures on marine ecosystems. However, ethical and logistical constraints restrict the tractability of experimental research with live marine mammals. Additionally, studies on the effects of changing ocean environments are further complicated by intricate gene-environment interactions across populations and species. These obstacles can be overcome with a …

A major limitation to producing high seed yields in berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) is failure to set seed, predominantly due to lack of pollination. Despite the importance of berseem clover as a leading forage legume, the contribution of pollinators to seed set is scarce. In Pakistan, the honeybee population is declining mainly because of the extensive use of neonicotinoid pesticides and habitat fragmentation. This, combined with the region’s harsh environment and the use of inferior, locally bred genotypes, has resulted in low seed yields. Insufficient seed availability leads to limited forage supply, resulting in poor livestock nutrition, which …

Shell Translucency: A Novel Eggshell Quality Parameter In Broiler Breeders, Duarte Neves, Austin Jasek, Colwayne Morris, Raquel Burin, Kevin Stephens, Marco Rebollo
Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference
In the United States, nearly 240 million commercial broiler breeder eggs are incubated weekly with an average hatchability of 79.1% (Third Party Reporting). Between 160 eggs/hen and 125 chicks/hen the loss is considerable. In 2007, an estimated 1% improvement in hatchability would escalate profits by over $25 million to hatcheries and markedly increase profitability in broiler operations (Schaal and Gherian, 2007). In order to tap into top hatchability performances, egg management in commercial hatcheries such as egg storage time and conditions, incubation temperature and humidity, as well as turning frequency are of utmost importance (Vick et al., 1993; Reis et …

Working In Pairs Increases Consistency Of Georgia Adopt-A-Stream's Habitat Assessment, Christopher H. Kodani, Robert Bourne, Cody Jones, Michael Kahle, Cecilia Nachtmann
Georgia Journal of Science
Habitat assessment is a skill that is important to stream ecologists of all levels, including volunteers of water quality monitoring programs such as Georgia Adopt-A-Stream (AAS). Some aspects of habitat assessment can be subjective because observers must use their best judgement in assessing some variables, therefore, it is worthwhile to examine the variation in volunteer stream monitor observations, the effect of training, and the reliability of habitat metrics calculated from the data collected. To gain some insight, we asked volunteers attending a workshop at AAS’s 2022 Confluence Conference to complete a Habitat Assessment Worksheet both before and after a short …

Automatic Short Answer Grading (ASAG), an escalating realm in natural language understanding, constitutes a focal point of research within the broader field of learning analytics. Over time, many ASAG solutions have been proposed to address the difficulties in teaching. However, no work addressed three crucial aspects of evaluation together, i.e., i) automatic evaluation of brief subjective/descriptive answers written in English, ii) identifying the evaluation inconsistency, and iii) provision of providing feedback about inconsistent evaluation to the evaluator. The current work proposes IntelliGrader, a comprehensive ASAG system that addresses the above-mentioned issues. Automated grading is accomplished through a model answer-based approach. …

The Heart-Brain Axis: Exploring Shared Genetic Signatures And Environmental Modifiers On Heart Failure And Alzheimer’S Disease Pathology, Helen Butler
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Heart failure (HF) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) are two leading causes of death in the United States. Conventionally viewed as independent conditions, HF/AD coexist in ~30% of patients and are mechanistically linked by shared genetic and biochemical characteristics. The del Monte lab has established the concept of the heart-brain axis through human samples and murine models, providing a framework for this dissertation which focuses on the interplay between genetics and the environment in shaping the heterogeneity of disease phenotypes.
1) Loss of function mutations in presenilin (PSEN1/2) genes represent overlapping genetic signatures in AD/HF. Presenilins form the g-secretase …

Significance
This study reveals a previously undescribed mechanism in plant defense, wherein a single pattern recognition receptor (StNILR1) recognizes a nematode-associated molecular pattern (NAMP) ascaroside #18 (Ascr18) as well as the phytohormone brassinosteroid (BR) to trigger distinct physiological responses. Furthermore, we identify a nematode effector (RHA1B) that disrupts this dual signaling by targeting StNILR1 for degradation. These findings shed light on the intricate interplay between plant immunity, hormonal regulation, and nematode parasitism.Abstract
In this study, we show that the potato (Solanum tuberosum) pattern recognition receptor (PRR) NEMATODE-INDUCED LEUCINE-RICH REPEAT (LRR)-RLK1 (StNILR1) functions as a dual receptor, recognizing …Qualitative Literacy: A Guide To Evaluating Ethnographic And Interview Research, Frida Akmalia
