Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It is the intent of this work to develop a process control apparatus and series of experiments that will help students visualize the PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control of a process and enhance their understanding of the subject. The apparatus is a computer-controlled PID mixing system that responds quickly to set point changes and process disturbances which are directly observable. The system can easily be simulated with a transfer function model in Matlab's Simulink, so that the controller can be optimized for the desired system response. Four experiments can be conducted with this system including: exploration of system modeling and controller optimization …

Tin Sensitization For Electroless Plating, Xingfei Wei Dec 2013

Tin Sensitization For Electroless Plating, Xingfei Wei

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The tin sensitization process has been used in electroless plating since 1940s Brenner and Riddell developed the electroless plating for surface metallization method. It was found to be an interesting topic to study tin sensitization for chemically controlling metal deposition on different substrates, because the tin sensitization process had critical effects on the electroless plated metal thin films. Nowadays electroless plating metal deposition is still an important method for depositing metals. It has a few advantages over the vapor deposition and electrodeposition method, such as work in an ambient condition, on nonconductive substrates, and without extra power input. Applying electroless …

A Review Of Some Subtleties Of Practical Relevance, Keqin Gu

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This paper reviews some subtleties in time-delay systems of neutral type that are believed to be of particular relevance in practice. Both traditional formulation and the coupled differential-difference equation formulation are used. The discontinuity of the spectrum as a function of delays is discussed. Conditions to guarantee stability under small parameter variations are given. A number of subjects that have been discussed in the literature, often using different methods, are reviewed to illustrate some fundamental concepts. These include systems with small delays, the sensitivity of Smith predictor to small delay mismatch, and the discrete implementation of distributed-delay feedback control. The …

A Direct Sampling Particle Filter From Approximate Conditional Density Function Supported On Constrained State Space, Sridhar Ungarala Jun 2011

A Direct Sampling Particle Filter From Approximate Conditional Density Function Supported On Constrained State Space, Sridhar Ungarala

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Constraints on the state vector must be taken into account in the state estimation problem. Recently, acceptance/rejection and projection methods are proposed in the particle filter framework for constraining the particles. A weighted least squares formulation is used for constraining samples in unscented and ensemble Kalman filters. In this paper, direct sampling from an approximate conditional probability density function (pdf) is proposed. It is obtained by approximating the a priori pdf as a Gaussian. The support of the conditional density is a subset of the intersection of two supports, the 3-sigma bounds of the priori Gaussian and the constrained state …

Calibration Of Hdm-4 For Use In Pavement Management Systems (Pms), Nurdin Mushule

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

One of major problems of road management in developing countries is the lack of decision making tools for preparing road maintenance programmes. This results in poor resource allocation and poor utilisation of existing assets. Pavement management systems (PMS) have been developed around the world in order to assist with the pavement management process in a co-ordinated and systematic manner. Some developed countries have derived pavement performance models that are suited to local conditions by setting up long term pavement performance studies. Conversely, most developing countries do not have the resources required to set up similar large-scale field experiments. However, validation …

Computing Arrival Cost Parameters In Moving Horizon Estimation Using Sampling Based Filters, Sridhar Ungarala Oct 2009

Computing Arrival Cost Parameters In Moving Horizon Estimation Using Sampling Based Filters, Sridhar Ungarala

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Moving horizon estimation (MHE) is a numerical optimization based approach to state estimation, where the joint probability density function (pdf) of a finite state trajectory is sought, which is conditioned on a moving horizon of measurements. The joint conditional pdf depends on the a priori state pdf at the start of the horizon, which is a prediction pdf based on historical data outside the horizon. When the joint pdf is maximized, the arrival cost is a penalty term based on the a priori pdf in the MHE objective function. Traditionally, the a priori pdf is assumed as …

The Use Of A Cell Filter For State Estimation In Closed-Loop Nmpc Of Low Dimensional Systems, Sridhar Ungarala, Keyu Li Mar 2009

The Use Of A Cell Filter For State Estimation In Closed-Loop Nmpc Of Low Dimensional Systems, Sridhar Ungarala, Keyu Li

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Combining variants of the Kalman filter and moving horizon estimation (MHE) with nonlinear MPC has been studied before. The MHE is appealing due to its ability to impose constraints and demonstrated superiority over extended Kalman filter. However, nonlinear MPC based on MHE requires solutions to two back to back nonlinear programs. In this paper we propose to use the cell filter (CF) to provide state feedback to the MPC regulator. The cell filter is a piecewise constant approximation of the conditional probability density of the states, whose temporal evolution is modeled by an aggregate Markov chain. Since the CF …

Bayesian Estimation Via Sequential Monte Carlo Sampling-Constrained Dynamic Systems, Lixin Lang, Wen-Shiang Chen, Bhavik R. Bakshi, Prem K. Goel, Sridhar Ungarala Sep 2007

Bayesian Estimation Via Sequential Monte Carlo Sampling-Constrained Dynamic Systems, Lixin Lang, Wen-Shiang Chen, Bhavik R. Bakshi, Prem K. Goel, Sridhar Ungarala

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Nonlinear and non-Gaussian processes with constraints are commonly encountered in dynamic estimation problems. Methods for solving such problems either ignore the constraints or rely on crude approximations of the model or probability distributions. Such approximations may reduce the accuracy of the estimates since they often fail to capture the variety of probability distributions encountered in constrained linear and nonlinear dynamic systems. This article describes a practical approach that overcomes these shortcomings via a novel extension of sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) sampling or particle filtering. Inequality constraints are imposed by accept/reject steps in the algorithm. The proposed approach provides samples representing …

Stability Of Transport And Rate Processes [Review], Yaşar Demirel Jun 2005

Stability Of Transport And Rate Processes [Review], Yaşar Demirel

Papers in Thermal Mechanics

About fifty years ago, the Turing instability demonstrated that even simple reaction-diffusion systems might lead to spatial order and differentiation, while the Rayleigh-Bénard instability showed that the maintenance of nonequilibrium might be the source of order in fluids subjected to a thermodynamic force above a critical value. Therefore, distance from global equilibrium in the form of magnitude of a thermodynamic force emerges as another constraint of stability; some systems may enhance perturbations, and evolve to highly organized states called the dissipative structures after a critical distance on the thermodynamic branch. Although the kinetics and transport coefficients represent short-range interactions, chemical …
