De Novo Protein Binding To Zinc Oxide Through Biomineralization Pathways, Jean-Mark A. Francis Jan 2026

De Novo Protein Binding To Zinc Oxide Through Biomineralization Pathways, Jean-Mark A. Francis

Theses and Dissertations

De novo proteins are structurally distinct from proteins found in nature and thus capable of having their amino acid sequence modified to accomplish tasks such as increasing protein-nanoparticle binding without unfolding or decomposing. Zinc Oxide nanoparticles are functionally distinct from their bulk counterparts and are widely used as semiconductors in a variety of fields such as medicine and agriculture. With demand for these nanoparticles increasing, environmentally sustainable methods of Zinc Oxide nanoparticle synthesis are being investigated as an eco-friendly alternative to currently utilized but environmentally hazardous chemical and physical techniques. This research investigates the binding characteristics between Zinc Oxide nanoparticles …

The Design And Implementation Of A Modular Tissue Engineering Test Bed To Pursue An Alternate Pathway Of Cell Culture Based Research, Ryley Patrick Griffin Dec 2024

The Design And Implementation Of A Modular Tissue Engineering Test Bed To Pursue An Alternate Pathway Of Cell Culture Based Research, Ryley Patrick Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

The development of a Modular Automated Tissue Engineering Test Bed (MATETB) is the next step in the development of cheap and easily available in vitro cell regulatory systems for both academic and industrial purposes. This project outlined the framework and requirements for a device that could automatically regulate and collect data on a cell culture through the manipulation of its liquid environment. From this framework, a prototype was built. The device would fulfill cell culture needs while collecting data automatically and allowing for live viewing and imaging of cells. The device was comprised of a mechanical skeleton (MS), an environmental …

Process Intervention For Water Recovery In Food Manufacture, Christian Michael Wisniewski Jun 2018

Process Intervention For Water Recovery In Food Manufacture, Christian Michael Wisniewski

Theses and Dissertations

A case study has been conducted for the recovery of water from complex wastewater at a soluble coffee manufacturing factory. The study has evaluated separation methods for process intervention based on environmental and economic assessments. Water recovery was identified in two possible wastewater streams at the factory: the overall plant effluent and an intermediate stream before it enters on-site pre-treatment. A novel vibratory field membrane separation was tested at the laboratory scale using real factory wastewater and scaled-up using appropriate design protocols. Recovery of water from the intermediate stream proved the most effective, both environmentally and economically. The full-scale vibratory …

The Synthesis Of Solid Supported Palladium Nanoparticles: Effective Catalysts For Batch And Continuous Cross Coupling Reactions, Kendra W. Brinkley Jan 2015

The Synthesis Of Solid Supported Palladium Nanoparticles: Effective Catalysts For Batch And Continuous Cross Coupling Reactions, Kendra W. Brinkley

Theses and Dissertations

Catalysis is one of the pillars of the chemical industry. While the use of catalyst is typically recognized in the automobile industry, their impact is more widespread as; catalysts are used in the synthesis of 80% of the US commercial chemicals. Despite the improved selectivity provided by catalyst, process inefficiencies still threaten the sustainability of a number of synthesis methods, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. Recyclable solid supported catalysts offer a unique opportunity to address these inefficiencies. Such systems coupled with continuous synthesis techniques, have the potential to significantly reduce the waste to desired product ratio (E-factor) of the production …
