Use Of Anionic Surfactant In Regeneration Of Spent Activated Carbon, Buch Kallapadee
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Surfactant-enhanced carbon regeneration (SECR) is a regeneration process that utilizes surfactant solution to dissolve adsorbed organic from spent activated carbon. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and methyl ester sulfonate (MES) are anionic surfactants that are used in this investigation. The study is done in 3 steps: sample characterization, regeneration and water flushing step. The proximate analysis of spent activate carbon contains 27.5% moisture, 27.2% volatile matter content, 10% total ash content. The spent activated carbon also contains 18.4% benzene. In regeneration step, the benzene removal by SDS and MES solution were compared. The effect of concentration, solution flow rate and temperature …

Conversion Of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate To Biojet Fuel Over Ni/Hy-Pditioz Core-Shell Catalyst, Chanakran Homla-Or
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Generally, jet fuel is obtained from the refining of petroleum feedstock in order to powering the aircrafts, hence the world is more confronting a problem with increasing air pollution emission. Therefore, biojet fuel is introduced as an alternative way to solve the problem. Biojet fuel can be derived from bio-based feedstock such as palm fatty acid distillate or PFAD. Which is converted via the deoxygenation reaction in order to remove oxygenated compounds, carboxylic and carbonyl groups in the fatty acid molecules then followed by hydrocracking and hydroisomerization reaction. The heterogeneous catalyst is used to convert PFAD into saturated paraffins in …

Analysis Of Biomarkers In Crude Oils, Processed Oils, And Spilled Oils, Pornpetch Hattakijvilai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Oil spills in marine are commonly come from crude oils, fuel oils and lubricating oils by accidental leakages or purposeful discharges to the surroundings. As crude oil and fuel oil which refined from the heavy fraction of crude oil have similar physical properties especially if they were weathering, it is difficult to differentiate that the spill has the origin from crude oil or fuel oil. In this study, five crude oils, two fuel oils, one fresh and one used lube oil that are typically used in Thailand were investigated. All crude oils, fuel oils, and used lube oil were weathered …
Analysis Of The Production Data From Marcellus Shale Wells, Amanda Parrish
Analysis Of The Production Data From Marcellus Shale Wells, Amanda Parrish
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The increasingly prevalent practice of unconventional technologies has called for the need for the critical analysis of production decline rates to meet economic targets. The high early time production returns and transient flow make matching a production curve to known methods of decline curve analysis problematic.
This research focuses on finding a technique that best fits a known production curve and then applying that technique to another well to check its accuracy. The goal is to find the earliest time of production data necessary to predict an accurate production curve over the lifespan of the well. This is essential to …
Detecting Overpressure Zones By Using Model Based Inversion In Kupe Field, New Zealand, Timucin Cakir
Detecting Overpressure Zones By Using Model Based Inversion In Kupe Field, New Zealand, Timucin Cakir
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Overpressure is a significant parameter during a drilling process in oil exploration. This phenomenon happens when pore pressure exceeds the limit of hydrostatic pressure in a formation and causes drastic hazards such as blow outs while drilling. This thesis focuses on the determination of possible overpressure areas and studies at three wells in Kupe Field, which is considered to be a natural-gas field in Taranaki Basin. In an effort to identify potential overpressure zones at the Kupe Field, acoustic impedance responses of 3D seismic data for three wells, along with their well log responses were evaluated.
Seismic inversion plays an …
Marketing Strategies To Enhance Profitability Among International Oil And Gas Service Companies, Hesameddin Zafari
Marketing Strategies To Enhance Profitability Among International Oil And Gas Service Companies, Hesameddin Zafari
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A significant drop in oil price in 2014 resulted in enormous pressure on marketing managers of international oilfield service companies to address new market expectations. In such competitive conditions, some marketing managers lack strategies to leverage profitability during downturns. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that senior marketing managers of international oilfield service companies in the Middle East successfully used to enhance sales performance, revenues, and profits during periods of declining oil prices. Theory of market segmentation, targeting, and positioning formed the conceptual framework for this study. Data were collected through semistructured interviews of 5 …
Investigation Of Hydraulic Fracture Complexity And The Benefits Of Maximizing Or Minimizing Complexity In Unconventional Resources, Rashid Sheikh Kassim
Investigation Of Hydraulic Fracture Complexity And The Benefits Of Maximizing Or Minimizing Complexity In Unconventional Resources, Rashid Sheikh Kassim
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation discusses two separate, yet inter-related studies. The first study was an extension of historical work comparing transversely fractured versus longitudinally fractured horizontal wells in multiphase flow environment. The second study investigated hydraulic fracture complexities and the benefits of maximizing or minimizing complexities in unconventional resources and tight reservoirs.
The main objective of this research was to investigate fracture complexity and its impact on well performance and economics. To achieve that objective, three different integrated completions and reservoir models were built. Two of the three models, a hybrid reservoir model and micro-seismic based SRV (stimulated reservoir volume) model, were …
Rock And Fluid Flow Characterization On Unconventional Reservoir Using Confocal-Laser-Microscopy And Micromodels, Songyuan Liu
Rock And Fluid Flow Characterization On Unconventional Reservoir Using Confocal-Laser-Microscopy And Micromodels, Songyuan Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
"Unconventional oil reservoirs have become significant sources of petroleum production and have even better potential in the future. Many unconventional oil systems consist of nanoscale pore throats, sub-micro-scale pores and micro-scale fractures that are significantly smaller than those from conventional reservoirs. To understand fluid flow behavior in unconventional reservoir, lab approaches were conducted using lab-on-chip method for the direct visualization of the water/oil flow in sub-micro-scale channels and the flow behavior with influence of surfactant and fractures.
In this work, tight sandstone thin slice was characterized using confocal-laser-microscope. Using designed micromodels, microscopic study of interface and residual oil distribution as …

Data Analysis And Application Guidelines Of Particle Gel Treatments, Yue Qiu
Doctoral Dissertations
“Water production is a severe worldwide issue in mature oilfields, which results in shortening the economic life of oil and gas wells. Particle gel have been widely applied in mature oilfields to improve reservoir sweep efficiency and control water production. To date, more than 10,000 injection wells were successfully treated by particle gels. However, considerable uncertainty still exists regarding to where and how particle gel treatments can be best applied.
The main objective of this study is to provide application guidelines and prediction model for particle gel treatments through data analysis. In this study, four particle gel treatment datasets have …
The Effect Of Testing Conditions On Lost Circulation Materials' Performance In Simulated Fractures, Montri Jeennakorn
The Effect Of Testing Conditions On Lost Circulation Materials' Performance In Simulated Fractures, Montri Jeennakorn
Doctoral Dissertations
"Lost circulation (LOC) problems increase costs of drilling significantly. It is not only the cost of the drilling fluid that is lost into the formation but also the costs of subsequent problems that can be higher than the cost of the drilling fluids. LOC also possibly leads to a serious risk of blowout incident.
Lost circulation materials (LCM) are regularly added to the drilling fluids with an expectation of plugging the flow path. Due to the difficulties of testing and monitoring LCM sealing processes in the field, LCM evaluation in the laboratory is often used to prove and assure successful …
Coal Combustion Products Utilization For Soil Amendment, Tran Thi Anh Tuyet
Coal Combustion Products Utilization For Soil Amendment, Tran Thi Anh Tuyet
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Nowadays, coal has a crucial role in generating energy all over the world. As a result, the consumption of coal creates a huge amount of coal combustion products, including bottom ash and fly ash. The coal ash has the potential characteristics to become a resource material in agriculture such as its texture, water holding capacity, bulk density, pH etc., and contains almost all the essential plant nutrients. However, most of the coal ash created is dumped into the landfill, which is a contributing factor in the environmental degradation. This study wants to use coal ash in agriculture as a way …
Time Series Pattern Discovery Techniques For Well-To-Well Log Correlation, Chanchai Apiwatsakulchai
Time Series Pattern Discovery Techniques For Well-To-Well Log Correlation, Chanchai Apiwatsakulchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Well log data is one of the most abundant data sources for subsurface characterization since almost all drilled wells are logged. Subsurface characterization requires correlated well log information. Processes to help perform well-to-well log correlation have been developed in this study based on the two approaches: pattern matching and pattern discovery. Pattern matching focuses on finding a known pattern of interest in uncorrelated wells. The use of Euclidean, Hamming, and Levenshtein distances in similarity measurement, Piecewise Aggregate Approximation (PAA), and Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX) data representation helps create reduced-resolution while maintains the main characteristics of the signals. Multi-resolution analysis provides …
Methane Adsorption By Carbon Molecular Sieve Derived From Polycarbonate And Polyaniline, Jakchai Thawornwatthanasirikul
Methane Adsorption By Carbon Molecular Sieve Derived From Polycarbonate And Polyaniline, Jakchai Thawornwatthanasirikul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The adsorptions of methane by carbon molecular sieves (CMS) were investigated at 35°C and 45°C by volumetric apparatus with the pressure range from 0 to 800 psia. CMS was prepared from polymer precursors such as polycarbonate (PC) and polyaniline (PANI) by carbonization under nitrogen inert atmosphere and activation by CO2 at temperature 700, 800 and 900°C. The yield of CMS is decreased with increasing carbonization and activation temperature. The methane adsorption capacity at 35°C of CMS derived from PC is 2.82 mmol CH4/g. The methane adsorption of the samples from PC is higher than those obtained from PANI for the …
Effect Of Oxygen-Containing Functional Groups On Methane Adsorption By Activated Carbon, Kittima Dheerapreampree
Effect Of Oxygen-Containing Functional Groups On Methane Adsorption By Activated Carbon, Kittima Dheerapreampree
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Natural gas has been applied as a fuel for vehicle because it is cheaper and cleaner burning than other fuels. In the vehicle, natural gas is ordinarily reserved by compressing and storing under high pressure at room temperature but this method has several limitations (e.g. low energy density, high weight of tank). Therefore, a porous material with high specific surface area (e.g. activated carbon) is suggested to eliminate the limitations of natural gas storage by compression, natural gas is adsorbed at relatively low pressure and room temperature. The adsorption capacity of activated carbons is related with their physical and chemical …
The Incipient Layer Of Wax Deposit, Tunya Ketjuntiwa
The Incipient Layer Of Wax Deposit, Tunya Ketjuntiwa
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The formation of the incipient layer of wax deposit when waxy oil is exposed to a cold surface is studied. Using a cold-finger apparatus, the evolution of deposit thickness is monitored with a video camera, allowing one to resolve the deposit layer formation from inception up to long times where deposit thickness no longer times where deposit thickness no longer grows. Characterization of wax deposits show that incipient layer has identical composition to waxy oil, indicating that deposit is not formed by a diffusion process. Modelling shows deposit formation at the investigated conditions cannot be explained by a diffusion process.

Evaluation Of Smart Water Flooding In A Selected Uae Carbonate Oil Reservoir, Mohammad Jasem Khalifi
Evaluation Of Smart Water Flooding In A Selected Uae Carbonate Oil Reservoir, Mohammad Jasem Khalifi
Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Theses
Water flooding is by far the most common method of improved oil recovery applied in oil reservoirs. Water is the cheapest source of external energy that has been used over decades in water flooding schemes, provided that the damage does not adversely affect its injectivity. Displacement efficiency of water flooding can be significantly affected by crude oil/water/rock interactions. Historically, some consideration was given to such interactions in the practice of reservoir engineering. In recent years, extensive research in this area has documented that higher oil recoveries can be obtained when low-salinity water is injected in a formation with high salinity …
Removal Of Carboxylic Acids And Water From Pyrolysis Oil, George Alexander Marshall
Removal Of Carboxylic Acids And Water From Pyrolysis Oil, George Alexander Marshall
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over 70% of the world’s energy consumption is provided by fossil fuels and with those reserves depleting at a fast rate, alternative energy sources or methods are needed to support the world’s energy needs. This research was done in an attempt to make it more economically feasible to produce fuel products, such as bio-diesel, from the upgrading of bio-oil obtained from the pyrolysis of biomass waste material such as sawdust. The high water and oxygenated compound content of bio-oil make it undesirable for fuel use; however, two methods involving surface modified commercial membranes were utilized in hopes of overcoming these …

Plasticized Polymer Coatings For Sh-Saw Sensors For High Sensitivity And Long-Term Monitoring Of Btex Analytes In Liquid Phase, Pintu Adhikari
Master's Theses (2009 -)
BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) are constituents of crude oil and hazardous to human health. Among them, benzene has the lowest maximum contaminant level for drinking water because of its carcinogenicity. Spills or leakage from underground storage tanks or hazardous waste sites can contaminate nearby groundwater with these volatile organic compounds. Therefore, it is very important to detect the presence of BTEX contamination as early as possible in order to start the remediation process and maintain a healthy environment. To develop an in-situ continuous monitoring sensor system, shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) sensor devices are being investigated …
Exploring The Effects Of Aromatic Molecules In Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery, Jacob M. Crain, Cliff Johnston, Rituraj Borgohain
Exploring The Effects Of Aromatic Molecules In Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery, Jacob M. Crain, Cliff Johnston, Rituraj Borgohain
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Chemical enhanced oil recovery (cEOR) methods are being used as a viable contributor to the world’s growing energy demands. Due to the complex chemical composition of crude oil, attempting to optimize the surfactant concentration and salinity of formulations is done empirically. This process can be very time intensive due to the wide variety of surfactant structures available for cEOR. Surfactant selection is typically done by matching the average chain length of the oil with that of the surfactant. In this study, we are trying to understand how aromatic structures present in Illinois Basin crude oil interact with surfactants. This will …

Initial Structural Subsidence As Reflected In Morrowan And Atokan (Pennsylvanian) Subsurface Stratigraphy, Northern Arkoma Basin, North-Central Arkansas, Fatimah Taher Nahi Al Asadi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Arkoma Basin is a carboniferous foreland basin that is known for its prolific gas production. The objective of this research is to study the initial subsidence of the basin by analyzing the strati-graphic and structural features of the study area. This was accomplished through IHS Petra, Surf-er 13, and Win-Tensor software. Field work studies comprised a large part of this study. Also, a seismic profile and Google earth elevation profiles are among the methods used to study the initial subsidence of the Arkoma Basin. The study area within the basin represents a transitional zone from the shelf into the …

Investigation Of The Use Of A Plasticizer-Polymer Sensor Coating With Improved Long-Term Stability In The Liquid Phase, Laura Jeanne Alderson
Investigation Of The Use Of A Plasticizer-Polymer Sensor Coating With Improved Long-Term Stability In The Liquid Phase, Laura Jeanne Alderson
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Benzene is one of the volatile organic compounds present in crude oil and gasoline. Leakage from underground storage tanks or hazardous waste sites can introduce benzene contamination into nearby groundwater. Benzene is a known carcinogen and its exposure is limited by the Environmental Protection Agency to 5 parts per billion (ppb) in drinking water. Early, accurate detection of the presence of benzene contamination in groundwater supplies is extremely important. Shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) devices with a chemically sensitive coating can be used for the detection of volatile organic compounds in liquid, such as BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and …
Oil Recovery By Polymer Flooding; Sensitivity Analysis To Technical Parameters, Rana Osama Fahmi Saqer
Oil Recovery By Polymer Flooding; Sensitivity Analysis To Technical Parameters, Rana Osama Fahmi Saqer
Theses
Numerous enhanced oil recovery techniques including miscible gas injection, chemical, thermal and other methods are applied at the third phase of production after both primary and secondary recovery have been exhausted. Polymer flooding is one of the chemical methods that recover more oil by decreasing the mobility of the system; by increasing the viscosity of the injected water that results in an improvement in the volumetric sweep efficiency.
The objective of this work is to asses and select the development options using polymer process that maximize oil recovery for a synthetic reservoir model where technical parameters are optimized thoroughly.
