The Formation Of The American League In Baseball; Changes In American Society And Culture That Contributed To The Demand For More Baseball In The Late 19th Century, Shawn M. Smith

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

The second professional major league (the American League) in baseball came about in response to the demand for more baseball entertainment due to the increased amount of leisure time Americans had in the late-19th century as society started the shift from an agricultural based lifestyle to a culture who worked predominantly in factory work.

The culture and society of the day changed drastically due to changing economic conditions of the time period. Due to monumental changes in industry, the vast majority of the population had shifted from working in an agrarian society to working in factories as a result of …

Building Climate Resilience Through Food Recovery, San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative, Alexander Pourfard, Aranza Ruvalcaba

San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative

In an effort to combat GHG emissions from food waste, California passed Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) into law in 2016. The bill contains key provisions aimed at increasing edible food recovery. By rescuing food that would otherwise go to the landfill, California entities have been able to help save precious food and advance sustainable solutions to address climate change in their local communities. Since the food recovery requirements took effect in January of 2022, over 217,000 tons of unsold food have been recovered annually, providing more than 700 million meals to food-insecure Californians.

Nil: An Analysis Of The New Financial Compensation Policy For College Athletes And Its Impact On College Athletics, Bruna Gebaili Sampaio

Senior Honors Theses

The newly introduced NCAA Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) laws allow college athletes to have additional opportunities for financial compensation, permitting them to generate revenue out of their image and personal brand. Due to these new regulations, the traditional concept of amateurism in college athletics has been significantly altered. Despite the contracts in no way being able to be based or compensated on an athlete’s on-court performance, these regulations put a strain on the amateurism principles that have marked college athletics in the last century.

These new laws also put to doubt the future of college athletics as we know …

House Divided: Executive Political Heterogeneity And Corporate Social Responsibility, Yongdong Wang, Ahmed M. Elnahas Apr 2025

House Divided: Executive Political Heterogeneity And Corporate Social Responsibility, Yongdong Wang, Ahmed M. Elnahas

Finance Faculty Publications

Empirical research in financial economics has been focused on studying the impact of CEO characteristics on corporate decision-making and performance. This practice overlooks the leadership and organizational research which postulates that for a senior leader to make a strategic change, managers at subordinate levels must support and reinforce such change. We investigate the effect of the top management team (TMT) political heterogeneity on the CEO’s ability to implant her/his ideology onto the firm’s CSR policies. We present evidence that a CEO’s ideology can shape CSR policies only in the existence of a politically homogeneous TMT. This result is robust to …

This study employs a survey approach to obtain both quantitative and qualitative data about the educational background and demographics of investors in the stock market. The empirical analysis will incorporate a multivariate regression that attempts to measure the impact of various demographics on one's "socially responsible investing score." A regression …

The Effects Of Restaurant Cancellation Policies And No-Show Awareness Campaigns On Reservation Behaviors, Esther Kim, Jason Tang, Minji Kim, Eun Joo Kim

Department of Hospitality and Tourism Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study addresses the persisting issue of restaurant reservation no-shows by applying the availability heuristic principle to analyze booking behaviors. Three experiments identified cancellation policy features and factors influencing booking and no-show behaviors. Findings confirmed that a cancellation barrier (i.e., strict policy and complex cancellation method) decreases no-show intentions and negatively affects booking intentions. This research suggests that a lenient cancellation policy, an easy cancellation method, and an awareness campaign can encourage positive guest booking behavior and reduce no-shows. Applying the availability heuristic principle to restaurant management, the current research enhances the understanding of psychological factors affecting guest decisions and …

The results of the Semantic Network Analysis and centrality analysis revealed differences in advertising effectiveness between the two brands. Moreover, …

Rethinking Money: How The Backfire Effect Shapes Consumer Reactions To Recommendations, Hee-Kyung Ahn, Eunkyoung Lee Apr 2025

Rethinking Money: How The Backfire Effect Shapes Consumer Reactions To Recommendations, Hee-Kyung Ahn, Eunkyoung Lee

Asia Marketing Journal

This research explored how priming of money influences consumers' reactions to others' opinions, particularly regarding compliance with different types of recommendations. Across two experiments, we found that subtle reminders of money made individuals value their independence in decision-making. As a result, they tended to respond negatively to recommendations that were overly prescriptive, such as specific product suggestions. On the other hand, when money reminders accompanied recommendations that offered some flexibility—like suggestions for product categories—individuals were more likely to agree with these flexible recommendations than specific suggestions. This effect even persisted when the category recommendations included only a single alternative.

Two subsequent regression analyses reveal a significant negative relationship between waiting-related comments and overall review ratings, underscoring the disproportionate influence of waiting experiences in shaping customer satisfaction. These findings offer valuable insights for hospitality and tourism practitioners and researchers aiming to deepen …

Asia Marketing Journal

This study examines the relationship between loneliness, online brand equity, and luxury purchase intentions among Asian MZ adults. While prior research attributed the surge in luxury purchases during COVID-19 to ``revenge spending'' aimed at alleviating negative emotions, this study suggests that individuals leverage loneliness, transforming it into a driving force for luxury consumption by addressing emotional needs rather than simply compensating for distress. By highlighting online brand equity as a moderating factor, the study demonstrates how luxury brands, traditionally reliant on offline experiences, can leverage digital channels to connect with Asian MZ consumers. Based on a survey of 200 participants, …

Bridging The Gap: Local Tax Regulations And The Future Of Green Tax In Indonesia, Daffa Zulfa Yudhanto, Murwendah Murwendah

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

Indonesia again ranks among the top three countries vulnerable to the impacts of climate shocks. The intensity of the risk from this phenomenon is expected to continue increasing if a change in societal behavior does not accompany it. Referring to the Environmental Protection Management Law, one of the steps that can be taken to regulate such behavior is through economic instruments, such as a green tax. The green tax will be ineffective without a coherent regulatory framework and stakeholder political will. This study analyzes the alignment of green tax regulations at the regional level and the gaps in their implementation …

The central research question is “How do first-year Generation Z …
