Management and leadership, though often conflated, represent distinct but complementary skills that are critical for organizational success. This thesis aims to explore the fundamental differences between management and leadership, highlighting how these roles interact and the necessity for individuals to master both to excel in today’s dynamic business environment. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from psychology, organizational behavior, and case studies, this research synthesizes academic literature to address key questions: What core competencies distinguish leaders from managers? How do these competencies align or conflict with one another in real-world settings? And what practical steps can individuals take to develop proficiency in …

U.S. Options Exchange-Traded Funds: Performance Dynamics And Managerial Expertise, Elroi Hadad, Davinder K. Malhotra, Robert Mcleod
School of Business Faculty Papers
This study examines the performance dynamics of U.S. options exchange-traded funds (ETFs), whose investment strategy involves options contracts. Analyzing monthly returns data from February 2014 to April 2023, we evaluate the risk-adjusted performance, volatility, and market sensitivity of U.S. options ETFs relative to U.S. and global equities. Using Carhart's four-factor model, we find that U.S. options ETFs yield lower monthly returns than those of U.S. equities but outperform global equities, suggesting potential diversification benefits. While U.S. options ETFs underperformed during the COVID-19 pandemic, they demonstrated resilience thereafter, offering higher rewards for downside risk. We also find that managerial expertise may …

The Politics Of Influencing: The Demand For Political Transparency In The Digital Age, Riley N. Chapman
Journalism Undergraduate Honors Theses
The goal of this research is to examine the relationship between influencers, party affiliation, and the desire for political disclosure. A desire for political disclosure is the preference for social media influencers to convey their political opinions to their audience to achieve connectedness. To research this, I examined the social media use of Generation Z students, as well as the uses and gratifications of their social media use. Two hundred and sixty-five students completed a Qualtrics survey assessing these variables. Results demonstrated that Gen Z feels indifferent about knowing the political views of the influencers that they follow. However, Democratic …

The Future Of Work: Examining New Graduate Sentiment On Remote Work And Return To Office Mandates, Ishani Adidam
The Future Of Work: Examining New Graduate Sentiment On Remote Work And Return To Office Mandates, Ishani Adidam
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic dwindles, companies that had leveraged Work from Home (WFH) flexibility are now implementing Return to Office (RTO) mandates. While 70% of employees prefer a hybrid work model, 61.4% are expected to work full-time in-office due to these mandates, leading to widespread employee discontent. This study investigates whether such dissatisfaction extends to new graduates entering the workforce. A pilot survey revealed that 68% of new graduates prefer a hybrid work modality, yet 52% stated that work modality would not significantly impact their job decision-making process, and 46% said they would be unlikely to leave …

Die Weltwettbewerbsvorteile Deutschlands, Theresa Isbilir
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
China begann, Deutschland in all diesen Anteilen zu überholen.

Surveying The Effects Of In-Person And Word Of Mouth Appeals To Gen-Z On Fundraising Outcomes, Stephanie Huynh
Honors Theses
Fluctuations in consumer behavior and perceived disposable income are a concern for nonprofit budgeting. Even with recurring donor subscriptions, donations can be an unreliable source of income. As Gen Zers become more prevalent in the workforce, it is a matter of time until they form the majority of the donor pool. This study explored the efficacy of repetition as a fundraising tool in appealing to Gen Zers. The sample was Gen Z students at the University of South Alabama, and a voluntary exploratory quantitative survey was administered. 113 responses were gathered. Through analysis with Spearman’s correlations and descriptive statistics, it …

A Survey On Faculty Summer Compensation In Accounting, Abby Box
A Survey On Faculty Summer Compensation In Accounting, Abby Box
Honors Theses
Many colleges and universities have paid faculty approximately one-ninth of their annual base salary to teach a summer course for years. Since more accounting schools and departments have become separately accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), there has been increased pressure to increase research output. Additionally, many states have seen reductions in higher education funding. Therefore, universities have tried to use summer school as a new funding source by increasing enrollment minimums in summer classes and reducing summer school pay rates for faculty. This study incorporates a 26-question survey sent to 580 directors and chairs …

An Introduction And Examination Of Firm-On-Firm Activism, Martha Jimena Paredes Villela
An Introduction And Examination Of Firm-On-Firm Activism, Martha Jimena Paredes Villela
Honors Theses
This research examines firm-on-firm activism, defined as public, coercive actions taken by corporations against another corporation to influence them socio-politically. I investigate how consumers evaluate this emerging form of corporate activism using costly signaling theory. I propose that consumers will perceive firm-on-firm activism as more authentic due to the financial and nonfinancial costs incurred by the firm, ultimately leading to increased consumer support. An online experiment will manipulate the type of corporate activism (firm-on-firm vs. traditional) and measure perceived costs, authenticity, and consumer support intentions. This study contributes to the corporate activism literature by introducing and examining a novel form …

Higher education institutions (HEIs) face increasing competition, not only from peer institutions but also from technology companies and software developers. The traditional educational model in HEIs is losing its appeal in comparison to more targeted and embellished learning offered by specialized outlets. This study proposes an innovative educational model aiming to help higher education avoid obsolescence. The proposed model, dubbed Business Education 4.0, treats content as building blocks that can be used to build personally tailored courses. The model guides students through creating their modularized custom courses, delivers course materials, analyzes student performance, offers students continuous support, and gathers feedback. …

Social Media Marketing, Overconsumption, And The Female Gen Z Consumer, Margaret G. Leslie
Social Media Marketing, Overconsumption, And The Female Gen Z Consumer, Margaret G. Leslie
Honors Theses
Social media has fundamentally changed the way consumers engage with products, trends, and purchasing decisions. The rise of digital marketing has amplified consumption patterns, particularly through influencer culture, microtrends, and the fear of missing out (FOMO). Over time, these factors have contributed to a cycle of overconsumption, where consumers are encouraged to make frequent, impulsive purchases with little consideration for sustainability or long-term value. This research examines the role of social media in driving overconsumption, with a specific focus on female Gen Z consumers. Through qualitative interviews, this study explores consumer motives, social validation, and the influence of marketing strategies …

Better Together – Maximising Group Creativity Through Co-Design, Sophie Tversky
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
The complexity and systems-level nature of organisational and societal challenges have called for engaging team creativity, benefiting from differing perspectives and experiences to drive impactful solutions. Surveying the co-design and group creativity literature, it is suggested that creative potential of a group is only realised when several polarities are leveraged by facilitators and orchestrators of the process. This concept was validated and extended through conducting a thematic analysis of a series of exploratory interviews, resulting in the identification of interdependent themes comprising stacks of polarities and a key problem to solve. The themes identified were: Determining Whether Co-Design is Appropriate, …

The Impact Of Brand Ownership Structure On Favorability And Authenticity Perception Of Surf Athlete Sponsorships, Tayler K. Baldwin
Journalism
This study investigates whether the ownership form of a surf brand, i.e., public or private, affects consumer authenticity and brand favorability impressions when partnered with surf athletes. Following Aaker's Brand Equity Model and relevant literature on influencer marketing and subcultural branding, the study employs a mixed-methods approach with a structured questionnaire survey (n = 526) alongside qualitative analysis of open-ended responses. Quantitative results indicate minimal variation in mean brand favorability for public compared to private brands, while privately owned brands had more consistent perceptions of authenticity across combinations of athlete partnerships. Qualitative outcomes support the assumption that privately owned brands …
