A Discussion Of Ethics In Relation To Business And Non-Business Students, Casey Mejeur Nov 2013

A Discussion Of Ethics In Relation To Business And Non-Business Students, Casey Mejeur

Honors Theses

In recent years, society has seen a major shift when it comes to the importance of ethical behavior, and also in what constitutes ethical behavior. One of the biggest reasons for this shift is because of scandals in the last couple of decades (ex. Enron). As the public loses trust in upper management because of these scandals, a greater emphasis is placed on the importance of ethics. This paper discusses ethics in relation to business majors and how their behaviors carry over into the workforce.

The thesis begins by determining different sources of ethical behavior, and what may drive people …

Strategic Philanthropy: The Evolution And Survival Of Business Social Responsibility Programs, Matthew Beecher, Dr. Ted Stoddard, Dr. David Whetten

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Business social responsibility programs face challenges and forces that were not known in recent years. Because of greater pressures to support diminishing government responsibilities by approaching more social problems, businesses now need to establish, define, and strengthen corporate-giving programs. Other challenges that are shaping the evolution of corporate philanthropy include an expanding definition of community stakeholders, problems with evaluation and assessment of corporate social activities, organizational downsizing and cost cutting, and changes in public opinion.

Analyzing E.M.B.A. Student Feedback, Ernest A. Capozzoli, David Gundersen

Journal of Executive Education

The results of an executive Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program assessment are analyzed and interpreted against the backdrop of increasing competition between universities to attract and retain qualified students. The public education environment is currently in a turbulent state. This turbulence is in part caused by such factors as: reductions in public funding for higher education due to constrained state budgets, student expectations, requirements imposed by accrediting bodies, and other outside constituencies requesting more accountability. The pressure to hold education institutions accountable is increasing at a rapid rate. To provide a measure of accountability and quantify program quality, education …

Journal of Executive Education

This case study tracks the narrative journey of four faculty women as they discovered ways to handle the transitional experience of moving from face-to-face classroom teaching into an online asynchronous adult learning environment. It is the intention of the study that, by documenting the experiences of these faculty, we will be able to provide recommendations that will assist and support other faculty beginning to teach in an online environment.

Outcomes-Based Courses: Using Pre And Post Course Measurements To Examine And Enhance Course Success, Jocelyn Lockyer, Richard Ward, Herta Fidler, John Toews, Margaret Churcher

Journal of Executive Education

Questionnaire-based pre/post course testing can be used to extend the cognitive processes provided in short (2- to 6-hour) courses. When participants participate in pre-and post-course assessments and implement the changes they commit to at the end of a course, course designers can have an impact on knowledge and workplace practices. A carefully designed pre-course assessment offered prior to an educational activity can help professionals draw upon their workplace experiences prior to a course and during that course.

Journal of Executive Education

This article explains the development and continuous modification of a tool that can be used to improve both participant experience and faculty performance in Executive Education programs. This tool is the Strategy Alignment Map (SAM). Participants that use the SAM create a document that summarizes 1) their strategic purpose for attending a program, 2) specific learning outcomes and how they align with their strategic purpose, and 3) action steps for implementing the learning. Executive Education, faculty and the Dean all benefit in different ways from this tool that improves participant educational experiences.

Terms Of The Contract: The Role Of Ethics In Higher Education, Betty L. Siegel, S. Craig Watson Nov 2013

Terms Of The Contract: The Role Of Ethics In Higher Education, Betty L. Siegel, S. Craig Watson

Journal of Executive Education

The subject of ethics is never far from the surface in most university classrooms. Imagine, for example, a literature professor teaching the close of Saul Bellow’s novel Mr. Sammler’s Planet. In the novel’s powerful final scene, the main character sits at the deathbed of a lifelong friend and quietly speaks a prayer, asking God to watch over the soul of his friend, someone who met at all costs the “terms of his contract, the terms which, in his inmost heart, each man knows. As I know mine. As all know. For that is the truth of it—that we all know, …

Teaching Business Ethics At A Distance, William I. Sauser Jr. Nov 2013

Teaching Business Ethics At A Distance, William I. Sauser Jr.

Journal of Executive Education

Without question “business ethics” is one of the hot topics of the day. Over the past months we have seen business after business charged with improper practices that violate commonly-accepted ethical norms. This has led to a loss of confidence in corporate management, and has had severe economic consequences. From many quarters business educators have heard the call to put more emphasis on ethical practices in their business courses and curricula. This paper describes an innovative method used to teach business ethics to Executive MBA students using distance education methodology. Now in its second year of inclusion within the curriculum …

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) declined by 0.08% during October 2013. The decrease in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, follows two months of steady expansion. Taking these three months together, the Nebraska economy is expected to expand at a moderate rate in the initial months of 2014. During October, two components of the indicator expanded and four declined. Single-family building permits rose on a seasonally adjusted basis. Exchange rate trends also were positive. A Research Proposal: Does The Glass Ceiling Show Signs Of Breaking In The 21st Century?, Sally A. Wilson Nov 2013

A Research Proposal: Does The Glass Ceiling Show Signs Of Breaking In The 21st Century?, Sally A. Wilson

MBA Student Scholarship

Unfortunately, today women are still trying to prove themselves equal to men. Women are often over looked in many industries just due to the fact of being a woman. There are many negative assumptions regarding women. Some examples are: women cannot do a job meant for a man, women cannot work late hours due to children, women are too soft and don’t represent a strong leader in a top level position. It’s hard to even think that in the 21st century the glass ceiling is continuing to block women from entering and advancing in managerial and supervisory roles. Women have …

The Impact Of Us Political Pressure On The Rmb Exchange Rate, Wenjie Zhang Nov 2013

The Impact Of Us Political Pressure On The Rmb Exchange Rate, Wenjie Zhang

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

The US-China game of Renminbi (RMB)/US Dollar exchange rate has aroused increasing attention recently. From the US perspective, appreciation of RMB exchange rate could reduce the US-China trade deficit, boost the US economy and thus lower the unemployment rate (Cheng and Zhang, 2012). Therefore it is crucial for the US government to figure out whether there is an influence from US political pressure on RMB flexibility and the most effective way to accelerate the appreciation of RMB exchange rate. Aminian et al (2008) believed that US political pressure may be one of the causes for the appreciation of RMB exchange …

Leaders And Heroes: Modern Day Archetypes, Sophon Shadraconis Nov 2013

Leaders And Heroes: Modern Day Archetypes, Sophon Shadraconis

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

This paper explores the salience of archetypes through modern day idealization of leaders as heroes. The body of research in evolutionary psychology and ethology provide support for archetypal theory and the influence of archetypes (Hart & Brady, 2005; Maloney, 1999). Our idealized self is reflected in archetypes and it is possible that we draw on archetypal themes to compensate for a reduction in meaning in our modern day work life. Archetypal priming can touch a person's true self and result in increased meaning in life.

Smartphones In The Workplace: Changing Organizational Behavior, Transforming The Future, Thiraput Pitichat Nov 2013

Smartphones In The Workplace: Changing Organizational Behavior, Transforming The Future, Thiraput Pitichat

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

In the past decade, Smartphones have been developed and increasingly integrated with people’s lives not only for social use, but professional use as well. Many researchers claim that Smartphones can have negative consequences in the workplace such as lowering productivity, separating people from their realities, bringing stress from personal issues to work, and creating bad manners. Companies, however, have a difficult time mandating a policy in regards to prohibiting the use of Smartphones. Therefore, CEOs and corporate leaders should encourage their employees to use their Smartphones as tools for increasing their company’s efficiency. This research aims to examine the results …
