Consumer Alienation: Relationships With Marketplace Interaction Styles, David J. Burns
Consumer Alienation: Relationships With Marketplace Interaction Styles, David J. Burns
AMTP Proceedings 2014
Within today’s shopping environment where discretionary purchases are the norm, individuals’ purchasing activities are affected by the degree to which they interact with the marketplace. One factor which appears to affect the degree of interaction consumers have with the marketplace is the degree of consumer alienation experienced. When attempting to better understand consumer alienation, marketplace interaction styles (e.g., assertiveness and aggressiveness) appear to be an area of particular interest. Individuals with stronger feelings of alienation can logically be expected to possess marketplace interaction styles which differ from those of individuals who are less alienated from the marketplace. These relationships were …

Is Environmental Concern In Advertising Related To The State Of The Economy? An Exploratory Study From The Wall Street Journal 2007-2011, Lindsay Larson, Luther T. Denton, Anni Rainio
AMTP Proceedings 2014
This study is an attempt to determine the relationship between the prevalence of environmental cues in advertisements and the state of the U.S. economy. Advertisements sampled from the Wall Street Journal, a preeminent daily business news publication in the United States, were examined during the years 2007, 2009, and 2011 to determine this relationship. While few direct environmental appeals were found within the sample of advertisements, a variety of indirect environmental cues were utilized for analysis. The results show that there is a quadratic relationship between advertisers’ use of indirect environmental cues and the state of the economy, such that …

The NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship, known to fans as March Madness, is one of the most popular annual sporting events in the United States. Despite its economic impact on the sports industry, relative few studies have examined phenomena surrounding the March Madness bracket. Some (e.g., Kaplan &Garstka, 2001; McCrea &Hirt, 2009) have focused on how to make accurate predictions for the tournament. However, sports marketers need to understand why and how participants make decisions when filling out their brackets, and no studies have investigated this behavior. To fill this void, the current project was conducted to explain the …

Monetizing Social Media In The Sport Industry--Or Not?, Dallas Branch Jr., Jason Falls
AMTP Proceedings 2014
One of the vexing issues for sport marketers is how one can develop marketing strategies and programs to utilize social media in order to "monetize" this effort. No one can argue the other 5 of 6 business drivers of social media marketing" (Falls, personal communications, 2013). These 5 include the following: Enhance Branding and Awareness Protect Brand Reputation Facilitate Customer Service Build Community Facilitate Research and Development However, when it comes to the sixth driver--"Drive Sales/Leads", sport organizations have found it difficult to affect their ability to "monetize" social media marketing efforts in this regard. It is this inability or …

Social Media In The Financial Services Industry, Nathaniel Gibbs, Perry Haan
AMTP Proceedings 2014
Innovative strategies set a company apart from its competitors. Lindsay and Hopkins (2010) said strategy is making the most of a current situation and devising a plan for the future. Likewise, if banks and other financial organizations want to enhance their brands, reduce costs, increase customer satisfaction, boost innovation, increase revenue, and maintain their competitive positions, they need to embrace social media. Social networks are used by marketers to connect and communicate with customers (Mangold & Faulds, 2009). Organizations must be receptive and flexible to remain relevant in the business environment (Bouckenooghe, Devos, & Van den Broeck, 2009). The environment …

Modeling And Analysis Of Value-Based Healthcare Delivery, Tannaz Mahootchi
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Healthcare reforms are emerging in order to control the increasing healthcare expenditures and to improve the health outcomes. In the context of the Value-based Healthcare Delivery reform, Michael Porter defines value as a patient's health outcome per dollar spent. Porter's proposal is comprised of organizing care around a medical condition (or around patient segments for primary care). Specifically, care will be provided by a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of providers, an Integrated Practice Unit (IPU). The IPU is jointly accountable for the health outcomes of patients and the costs of providing care during the full cycle of care.

AMTP Proceedings 2014
LinkedIn is the largest business-oriented collaborative tool enabling Professional-to-Professional (P2P) and Business-to-Professional (B2P) connections. Regardless of organizational type, there are distinct advantages for firms to utilize LinkedIn. This research builds on previous work examining the intensity of LinkedIn usage by organizational type -- Fortune 200, INC 200, Fortune 200 Non-profits – by focusing on truly small businesses and small non-profits with revenues between $500K to $2M revenue. The study of approximately 1000 organizations finds that truly small non-profits and small businesses utilize the B2P features of LinkedIn significantly less than all three types of larger organizations. This paper applies a …

Recent legislation, such as the Weapon Systems Acquisition Reform Act of 2009, requires a renewed emphasis on understanding Operating and Support (O&S) costs. Conventional wisdom within the acquisition community suggests a 70:30 cost ratio with respect to O&S and acquisition of an average weapon system. Using 37 Air Force and Navy programs, the authors estimate the mean overall ratio of O&S costs to acquisition costs to be closer to 55:45, although many weapon systems displayed significant deviation from this 55 percent average. Contributing factors such as life expectancy and acquisition strategy (i.e., new system or modification) affect this variance. Their …

Influence Of Relationship Marketing Underpinnings On Egyptian Hotel Customer's Satisfaction And Loyalty, Ahmed I. Ghoneim, Amira S. Ahmed
AMTP Proceedings 2014
This study seeks to examine relationship marketing as influenced by service provider's attributes and resulting in customer's satisfaction and loyalty within the Egyptian hotel industry. A conceptual model linking service provider's attributes to relationship marketing underpinnings and the latter to relational outcomes defined as customer's satisfaction and loyalty, was tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) on a sample of 279 hotel customers in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The results showed that service provider's competency significantly influences relationship marketing underpinnings. On the other hand, the influence of service provider's appearance on customer's perception of commitment and conflict is not supported. Further, relationship …

To Transform A Culture: The Rise And Fall Of The U.S. Army Organizational Effectiveness Program, 1970–1985, James Michael Young
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
In the early 1970s, following a decade of social upheaval in the US and a traumatizing military defeat in Vietnam, a group of progressive army officers, armed with recent graduate degrees in the social and behavioral sciences, created a grass roots movement that soon led to the implementation of the largest organizational development program ever conducted. Wartime atrocities and chronic careerism in the Army officer corps, along with President Richard Nixon’s promise to create an All-Volunteer Force (AVF), opened up a window of opportunity for these progressives to promote transformational leadership theories grounded in humanistic psychology. In institutionalizing OD across …

The Reputational Costs Of Tax Avoidance*, John Gallemore, Edward L. Maydew, Jacob Thornock

This study investigates whether firms and their top executives bear reputational costs from engaging in aggressive tax avoidance activities. At least two decades of empirical tax research has shown that firms engage in a wide range of strategies for tax avoidance purposes. 1 Recent studies suggest that for many firms, tax avoidance appears to be highly effective at reducing the firms’ tax payments and increasing their after-tax earnings. For example, Dyreng, Hanlon, and Maydew (2008) find that more than a quarter of publicly traded U.S. firms are able to reduce their taxes to less than 20 percent of their pre-tax …

This paper draws on two distinct literatures – one that investigates the impact of accounting restatements and another that investigates the trading behavior of short sellers – to further our understanding of how sophisticated investors process and respond to news about accounting corrections. We examine short-seller behavior in the days surrounding restatement announcements to determine when short sellers identify restatements and how they trade on restatement news. Our findings suggest that short sellers do not appear to anticipate restatement announcement dates, but we find that abnormal short selling is significantly higher than is typical when restatements are announced, especially for …

The Media And Mispricing: The Role Of The Business Press In The Pricing Of Accounting Information, Michael S. Drake, Nicholas M. Guest, Brady J. Twedt

This study investigates the role of the business press in the pricing of accounting information. Using a comprehensive dataset of more than 111,000 earnings-related business press articles published from 2000–2010, we find that press coverage of the annual earnings announcement mitigates cash flow mispricing, but has a negligible effect on accrual mispricing. We provide evidence that this impact is driven primarily by the press disseminating the information more broadly, rather than by the creation of new content that helps investors understand the implications of accounting information. Our results suggest that the business press plays an important role in facilitating the …

When companies announce their quarterly results, along with their standard GAAP earnings number, managers sometimes choose to disclose an adjusted (pro forma) earnings figure that excludes one or more income statement line items from net income. While managers frequently argue that they exclude transitory items from GAAP income in an effort to better reflect core operating performance, regulators and critics of pro forma reporting contend that these exclusions can overstate operating results. In particular, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a warning that under certain circumstances, pro forma reporting “can mislead investors if it obscures GAAP results” (SEC 2001). …
