Global E-Mentoring: Overcoming Virtual Distance For An Effective Mentoring Relationship, Nancy Philippart Jan 2014

Global E-Mentoring: Overcoming Virtual Distance For An Effective Mentoring Relationship, Nancy Philippart

Wayne State University Dissertations

Mentoring can enhance an employee's career development and advancement but traditional face-to-face mentoring has become less relevant because of globalization, increased employee mobility and technology-enabled work. A new mentoring model enabled by technology has emerged to meet the needs of today's complex, fast changing global workplace. Although e-mentoring has several advantages over traditional mentoring, the absence of regular face-to-face interactions requires different strategies to develop an effective mentoring relationship. Moreover, additional complexities arise when this virtual mentoring is global.

This research utilizes the construct of virtual distance, the "psychological separation" that has been found to impact performance outcomes of geographically …

How Can Professional Membership Associations Provide Meaningful Value For Their Members?: Creating Models Of Affiliation And Engagement, Lisa A. Dicke, Marina Saitgalina

School of Public Service Faculty Publications

What do individual association members think about their association membership? What do they value and what do they want to see associations provide in the future? This case study uses face-to-face interviews and focus groups with 12 international Ph.D. students enrolled in a Public Administration and Management program at a major university in Texas to provide answers to these questions. The research offers an understanding of how people from diverse cultures view professional associations. The Ph.D. students were also asked about the importance of their association as a means for building ties and making connections with others, and about volunteering. …

The Effects Of Trust And Perceived Supervisor And Organizational Support On Employees' Attitudes And Behavior, Rebecca Lauren Burnheimer Jan 2014

The Effects Of Trust And Perceived Supervisor And Organizational Support On Employees' Attitudes And Behavior, Rebecca Lauren Burnheimer

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Previous research has identified perceived supervisor support (PSS; Eisenberger et al., 1986) as a major contributing factor in the development of perceived organizational support (POS; Eisenberger et al., 1986), which has been found to lead to higher levels of positive work attitudes and behaviors. However, researchers have not yet explored the ways in which employees come to feel supported by their supervisors (i.e., how does PSS develop?). Based on social exchange theory (Blau, 1964; Thibaut & Kelley, 1959), the current study assessed the relation of employees' trust in their supervisor to PSS. This study also attempted to replicate the relationships …

A Stochastic Volatility Model With Leverage Effect And Regime Switching, Hong Jiang Jan 2014

A Stochastic Volatility Model With Leverage Effect And Regime Switching, Hong Jiang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Modeling the volatility of asset returns is a very important study in financial economics. Among the time-varying volatility models, the Stochastic Volatility (SV) models are argued to have advantages over the autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) models. The purpose of this article is to put forward a generalized and flexible Stochastic Volatility model, the Stochastic Volatility Model with Leverage Effect and Regime Switching (SVLR model), which could capture the complex features of financial time series to the most extent.

Performance = Ability X Motivation : Exploring Untested Moderators Of A Popular Model, Christopher Patrick Cerasoli Jan 2014

Performance = Ability X Motivation : Exploring Untested Moderators Of A Popular Model, Christopher Patrick Cerasoli

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

It seems a self-evident truism to many that performance at school and work is determined by the extent to which one "can do" and one "will do" the task effectively. Grounded in this logic, research, practice, and textbooks in industrial-organizational psychology over the past 60 years have supported the notion that performance is a multiplicative function of ability and motivation, such that P = f(AXM) (where P = performance, A = ability, and M = motivation). In this study, I addressed four issues surrounding this multiplicative model. First, I began by exploring whether and when multiplicative (versus simpler additive) models …

Essays On Failure Management Of Nonprofit Organizations, Junesoo Lee Jan 2014

Essays On Failure Management Of Nonprofit Organizations, Junesoo Lee

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

No matter how well an organization is managed, we face some inevitable failures such as deficient volunteers, excess demands for service, unstable grants, etc. Paradoxically however, successful organizations have been using their failures creatively. Beyond such successful use of failure, can benefits of failure be systematically described? What would be the generic ways to benefit from failure? In order to answer that question, three essays were written with the following details.

A Multifoci Model Of Workplace Incivility And Deviance : Examining The Moderating Role Of Prosocial Orientation, Wisanupong Potipiroon Jan 2014

A Multifoci Model Of Workplace Incivility And Deviance : Examining The Moderating Role Of Prosocial Orientation, Wisanupong Potipiroon

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Despite the scholarly interest in workplace incivility in the field of organizational behavior, public administration (PA) scholars have paid much less attention to this timely and relevant topic. Based on a unique sample of 401 individuals (nested in 83 work units) employed in a public organization in Thailand, the present study seeks to address this void by examining whether different sources of workplace incivility (i.e., supervisors, coworkers and customers) will have differential effects on different types of employee deviant behaviors (i.e., deviance directed towards the organization, supervisors, coworkers and customers). Based on a multifoci and target-specificity framework, the present study …

Segregation And The Adaption Of Community-Based Organizations To Multiethnic Immigration In Newark And Jersey City : 1990-2010, Joseph R. Gibbons Jan 2014

Segregation And The Adaption Of Community-Based Organizations To Multiethnic Immigration In Newark And Jersey City : 1990-2010, Joseph R. Gibbons

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

As we move into the 21st century, racial and ethnic segregation remains a dominating force in American Cities. Segregated black and Hispanic communities are known to suffer not only from a lack of resources, compared to non-Hispanic white neighborhoods, but also from a distinct sense of parochial isolation. At the same time, nonprofit community-based organizations (CBOs) have gained an increasingly central role in providing basic services to the urban needy. As of yet, there has been no systematic study to explore how segregation impacts the operation of CBOs. This dissertation employs a mixed methods research strategy to examine CBOs in …

Low-Income Consumers In Brazil: Nuances Of A Market That Can No Longer Be Ignored, Luiz Antonio Slongo, Carlos Sergio Valdez Saldanha, Syed H. Akhter Jan 2014

Low-Income Consumers In Brazil: Nuances Of A Market That Can No Longer Be Ignored, Luiz Antonio Slongo, Carlos Sergio Valdez Saldanha, Syed H. Akhter

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

The main goal of this paper is to better understand the low income Brazilian market, supported by two basic concepts: price unfairness and perceived product value. In order to meet the research objective a qualitative approach, based on two methodological procedures – observation and in-depth interviews –, was used. The findings indicate that small neighborhood retailers, despite lacking adequate physical infrastructure and management skills, play an important role in meeting the needs of low-income consumers. They offer convenience, personalized services, easy and uncomplicated credit (on an informal basis), and a product mix that matches the needs and desires of their …

Runner Identity And Sponsorship: Evaluating The Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon, Nancy L. Lough, Jennifer Pharr, Jason O. Owen

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

The economic value of participation sport has been reported to eclipse spectator sport significantly. However, scholars have acknowledged the relative lack of research on this important segment of the sport market. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between runner identity and race sponsor effectiveness. Surveys were sent to participants in the Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. The survey was constructed to measure runner identity, and sponsor effectiveness as interpreted through rates of recognition, recall and purchase intention. Runners were divided into three groups based on their runner identity score. Of the predictive variables, only runner …

Understanding Consumers' Thoughts And Feelings About Financial Literacy And How Financial Literacy Affects Their Lives Using The Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (Zmet), Belle Marie Jan 2014

Understanding Consumers' Thoughts And Feelings About Financial Literacy And How Financial Literacy Affects Their Lives Using The Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (Zmet), Belle Marie

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Financial literacy impacts the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Not all individuals appear to possess the basic financial knowledge necessary to plan for a comfortable lifestyle (Mandell, 2008). Some individuals possess financial knowledge but other psychosocial factors interfere with the ability of that knowledge to influence their actual consumer financial behavior (Dodaro, 2011; Estelami, 2008; Huston, 2010). Personal construct theory (Kelly, 1955) posits that behavior reflects self-constructed meaning and reality derived from a combination of experience and anticipation of future events that frame an individual's worldview. Meaning is self-constructed yet influenced by society's complex interrelationships. Thus, behavior reflects social …

Ceo Assessment And Onboarding: Results Of The 2014 Hr@Moore Survey Of Chief Hr Officers, Patrick M. Wright, Anthony J. Nyberg, Donald J. Schepker, Michael D. Ulrich

Reports

This report describes the results of a survey of over 200 Chief HR Officers (CHROs) regarding the assessment practices their companies use to gather information on potential CEO successors. The survey also asked them to describe practices used to socialize/orient a new CEO into his or her role. The most popular assessment techniques for internal CEO candidates consisted of past performance accomplishment profiles (reported by 95% of CHROs), past development needs (88%), 360-degree evaluations (80%) and unstructured interviews (69%). For external candidates, reference checks topped the list (87%), followed by past performance accomplishments (85%), unstructured interviews (72%) and structured behavioral …

Chro Succession: Results Of The 2014 Hr@Moore Survey Of Chief Hr Officers, Patrick M. Wright, Anthony J. Nyberg, Donald J. Schepker, Michael D. Ulrich

Reports

This report discusses the results of the 2014 HR@Moore Survey of Chief HR Officers, particularly focusing on the section that explored Chief HR Officer (CHRO) succession. The results show that a vast majority (60%) of the CHROs were hired either from outside the organization or outside the HR function, with only 32% attaining the role through a normal internal succession process. Most outside hires suggested that the reason for the outside hire was due to a lack of sufficient internal talent. In addition, CHROs reported that they were least prepared for dealing with the board around issues of executive compensation, …

Crime And Natural Resource Booms: Evidence From Unconventional Natural Gas Production, Timothy M. Komarek Jan 2014

Crime And Natural Resource Booms: Evidence From Unconventional Natural Gas Production, Timothy M. Komarek

Economics Faculty Publications

The USA has experienced a sudden expansion of oil and natural gas production due to the combination of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. The energy extraction boom has had many localized impacts, most notably in areas with substantial shale gas reserves. This paper exploits a natural experiment in the Marcellus region to examine one channel of the so-called resource curse, the effect of resource extraction on local crime. The results show that areas experiencing a natural gas extraction boom suffer an increase in overall violent crimes, while property crimes remain similar to non-boom areas. Furthermore, the violent crime increase appears …

Intermediate Inputs And External Economies, Haiwen Zhou Jan 2014

Intermediate Inputs And External Economies, Haiwen Zhou

Economics Faculty Publications

Is the degree of external economies (at the industry level) higher than the degree of internal increasing returns (at the firm level)? If so, what is the exact source of this difference? In the general equilibrium model in which firms producing final goods choose the degree of specialization of their technologies, external economies arise from the usage of intermediate inputs and the existence of internal increasing returns. It is frequently assumed that increasing returns are absent at the firm level while present at the industry level. In this model, the existence of increasing returns at the firm level is necessary …
