101 Puppy Mills: A Sampling Of Problem Puppy Mills In The United States, The Humane Society Of The United States
PUPPY MILL INFORMATION
The goal of the report is to inform consumers about widespread problems with puppy mills before they make an uninformed purchase that could potentially support animal cruelty. The report includes puppy mills from 22 states, but because most of the dealers sell online or to pet stores, their puppies could be available to unwary consumers in all 50 states and beyond.
The breeders and sellers on this list represent common issues with puppy mills and puppy mill brokers. This report is not a complete list of all puppy mills, nor a list of all problematic facilities. For more information on …

Welfare Of Non-Traditional Pets, Catherine A. Schuppli, David Fraser, H. J. Bacon
Welfare Of Non-Traditional Pets, Catherine A. Schuppli, David Fraser, H. J. Bacon
Wild and Exotic Animals as Pets Collection
The keeping of non-traditional or ‘exotic’ pets has been growing in popularity worldwide. In addition to the typical welfare challenges of keeping more traditional pet species like dogs and cats, ensuring the welfare of non-traditional pets is complicated by factors such as lack of knowledge, difficulties meeting requirements in the home and where and how animals are obtained. This paper uses examples of different species to highlight three major welfare concerns: ensuring that pets under our care i) function well biologically, ii) are free from negative psychological states and able to experience normal pleasures, and iii) lead reasonably natural lives. …

Get Your Head In The Game: Using Gamification In Business Education To Connect With Generation Y, Sonja Martin Poole, Elyria Kemp, Lauri Patterson, Kimberly Williams
Marketing (Formerly Marketing and Law)
Generation Y learners think and learn differently. They seek learning environments that are relaxed, flexible, interactive, and engaging. Gamification incorporates game mechanics to non-game contexts and has been found to motivate or incentivize students using rewards such as points, badges, and certificates. The purpose of this research is to investigate how utilizing gamification mechanics and customer engagement principles in college business courses can engage and foster learning among Generation Y students. Findings from this research suggest that using gamification techniques in the classroom can be an effective tool for enhancing student engagement and learning. Implications and future research are presented.
Truth And Consequences In The Global Village, Val Larsen, Sweta Thota
Truth And Consequences In The Global Village, Val Larsen, Sweta Thota
Marketing (Formerly Marketing and Law)
Almost everyone agrees that businesses have a moral obligation to be honest. Less emphasized is the fact that customers, the co-creators of value, are likewise obliged to be honest. Customer dishonesty like business dishonesty creates deadweight economic losses. Marketers can improve the moral infrastructure of society and eliminate these deadweight losses if they bring the moral accountability of the gemeinshaftlich village to the gesellschaftlich global economy. Customers can be made accountable through an expansion of credence markets that measure integrity and that compel the dishonest to bear the costs of their own misbehavior. The feasibility of expanding credence markets is …

Gpusvcalibration: A R Package For Fast Stochastic Volatility Model Calibration Using Gpus, Matthew Dixon, Sabbir Ahmed Khan, Mohammad Zubair
Business Analytics and Information Systems
In this paper we describe the gpusvcalibration R package for accelerating stochastic volatility model calibration on GPUs. The package is designed for use with existing CRAN packages for optimization such as DEOptim and nloptr. Stochastic volatility models are used extensively across the capital markets for pricing and risk management of exchange traded financial options. However, there are many challenges to calibration, including comparative assessment of the robustness of different models and optimization routines. For example, we observe that when fitted to sub-minute level midmarket quotes, models require frequent calibration every few minutes and the quality of the fit is routine …
Bankruptcy: The Divergent Cases Of The City And The County Of San Bernardino, Richard Callahan, Mark Pisano
Bankruptcy: The Divergent Cases Of The City And The County Of San Bernardino, Richard Callahan, Mark Pisano
Public and Nonprofit Administration
The cases are the two separate jurisdictions of the City of San Bernardino and the County of San Bernardino, California, U.S.A. The matched pair offers a unique opportunity for a research design that compares a bankrupt city government with a jurisdiction sharing the essential demographic, economic, and geographical features, though as a county a different level of government. The two cases offer insights into bankruptcy as not simply a function of economic forces or recent poor policy choices but as a result of a pattern of decision-making, a structure of government, and the constraints placed on leadership by structure and …

Public and Nonprofit Administration
At the University of San Francisco’s School of Management (SoM), working adults enrolled in our Bachelor of Science in Management degree completion program participate in a process of experience and reflection that prepares them, as our slogan proclaims, to “change the world from here.” Before our working adult students take a management or business class, they are introduced to a process we call the Interdisciplinary Studies Assessment (ISA), a prior learning opportunity that is distinctive for how it works within an Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) that recognizes that learning is a lifelong journey that can take place in a variety …
Abc Analysis For Inventory Management: Bridging The Gap Between Research And Classroom, Handanhal Ravinder, Ram B. Misra
Abc Analysis For Inventory Management: Bridging The Gap Between Research And Classroom, Handanhal Ravinder, Ram B. Misra
Department of Management Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
ABC analysis is a well-established categorization technique based on the Pareto Principle for determining which items should get priority in the management of a company's inventory. In discussing this topic, today's operations management and supply chain textbooks focus on dollar volume as the sole criterion for performing the categorization. The authors argue that today's businesses and supply chains operate in a world where the ability to deliver the right products rapidly to very specific markets is key to survival. With suppliers, intermediaries, and customers all over the globe, and product lives decreasing rapidly, this focus on a single criterion is …

Does Minority Ownership Concentration Influence The Relationship Between Board Independence And Tunneling?, Charles Cullinan, Fangjun Wang, Peng Wang, Xi Yu
Does Minority Ownership Concentration Influence The Relationship Between Board Independence And Tunneling?, Charles Cullinan, Fangjun Wang, Peng Wang, Xi Yu
Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles
Tunneling is a type of expropriation of resources from the minority shareholders of a company by its largest shareholder. Previous research has found mixed results on the relationship between board independence and tunneling, and on the relationship between minority shareholder concentration and tunneling. We examine whether more independent boards may be better at limiting tunneling when there is greater minority shareholder concentration. Using a sample of 3,084 firm-years of Chinese companies, we find a significant interaction between board independence and minority shareholder concentration in a model of tunneling. These results suggest that more independent boards are more likely to inhibit …

Adopting An Open Innovation Paradigm: Managerial Perceptions And The Innovation Value Chain, Anushree Priyadarshini, Yuhui Gao, Colm O'Gorman
Conference papers
This study explores the adoption of open innovation (OI) practices in medium-sized and large firms in a sector characterised by low levels of external collaborations. Many firms struggle to adopt OI practices (O'Connell, 2011); the processes that lead to the adoption of OI practices are unclear (Mortara and Minshall, 2011); and the degree of open innovation, as measured by the number of external collaborations, in Irish firms is low (Vahter et al., 2012). This inductive study is based on case studies of a significant innovation in four medium-sized (€50m to €500m) and four large (Revenue above €500m) firms from the …
The Adoption And Diffusion Of It Management Innovations: Adaptation, Reinvention, Alternative Designs, And Rhetorical Persuasion, Quang N. Bui
2014
This research examines the adoption and diffusion process of Information Technology (IT) management innovations—ones that focus on the organizing logics and governance of IT activities. IT management innovations are inherently important to organizations as they can dramatically transform the way businesses are organized and operated. However, because those innovations are tacit and composed mostly of abstract ideas, their adoption and diffusion are often plagued by ambiguity and fads, at times best described as "a solution in search of a problem." Against this backdrop, using theories from communication, sociology, Information Systems, and organizational studies, this research focuses on three underexplored aspects …

How Effective Is Capitation At Reducing Health Care Costs?, David P. Paul Iii, Jennifer Brunoni, Tasha Dolinger, Irina Walker, Danielle Wood, Alberto Coustasse
Management Faculty Research
Due to skyrocketing healthcare costs in the U.S., several strategies, including capitation, have been utilized to reduce overall cost. Capitation has helped to contain costs by placing a limit on the amount of reimbursement that is offered to the provider for specific types of patients and care. In order for physicians to improve their profitability under capitation, their practices must become more cost efficient. The purpose of this research was to analyze the effects of capitation on the overall reduction of healthcare cost.

Introduction: Bed rest or immobilization is frequently part of treatment for patients in the intensive care unit with critical illness. The average intensive care unit length of stay was 3.3 days and for every day spent in an intensive care unit bed, the average patient spent an additional 1.5 days in a non-intensive care unit bed. Daily costs have increased more than 30% from 2000-2005 with an average daily cost of $3518. Weaning from mechanical ventilation has been correlated with increased intensive care unit and hospital length of stay. Mechanical ventilation has been correlated with the development of intensive care …

The Mink Framework: Investigating Individual Knowledge Indicators, Mohamed Ragab, Amr Arisha
Conference papers
Purpose – Effective knowledge management (KM) entails knowledge assessment capability to enable identification of knowledge assets and proper governance of value creation dynamics. Although some studies have attempted to use different methods to measure knowledge at the organisational level, few have addressed the individual knowledge holder. The purpose of this paper is to present a state-of-the-art framework, referred to as MinK, that enables organisations to measure individual knowledge in the business context using a novel diversity of indicators.
Design/methodology/approach – The model was developed based on a comprehensive conceptual framework. A pilot study composed of 20 semi- structured interviews elicited …
