The Influence Of Descriptive Norms On Investment Risk, William J. Montford, Ronald E. Goldsmith Mar 2014

The Influence Of Descriptive Norms On Investment Risk, William J. Montford, Ronald E. Goldsmith

AMTP Proceedings 2014

This study examines the effect of descriptive norm messages (i.e., highlighting what others are doing) on intentions to increase investment risk. Evidence shows that alarming numbers of people nearing retirement insufficiently save for this next life stage. In addition, research finds that differences exist in investment risk tolerance between men and women, with many women investing too conservatively. This finding is of particular concern as women typically experience longer lifespans, thus relying on accumulated savings for longer periods of time. The present study extends work in financial marketing by examining the influences of social norms and peer influence, constructs shown …

The Sourcing Hub And Upstream Supplier Networks, Anupam Agrawal, Luk N. Van Wassenhove, Arnoud De Meyer Mar 2014

The Sourcing Hub And Upstream Supplier Networks, Anupam Agrawal, Luk N. Van Wassenhove, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper, we explore how firms can better manage their sourcing by developing relationships not only with their suppliers but also with their suppliers' suppliers. We detail an empirical case study explaining how the firm developed relationships with its suppliers and raw material suppliers via a collaborative center, the sourcing hub. We then analytically model the scenarios encountered in our empirical work and examine two facets of upstream sourcing under uncertain demand scenarios: (a) firms can supply raw material directly to their suppliers, and this may be beneficial for the firm and its suppliers; and (b) firms can bring …

A Lack Of Material Resources Causes Harsher Moral Judgments, Marko Pitesa, Stefan Thau Mar 2014

A Lack Of Material Resources Causes Harsher Moral Judgments, Marko Pitesa, Stefan Thau

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the research presented here, we tested the idea that a lack of material resources (e.g., low income) causes people to make harsher moral judgments because a lack of material resources is associated with a lower ability to cope with the effects of others' harmful behavior. Consistent with this idea, results from a large cross-cultural survey (Study 1) showed that both a chronic (due to low income) and a situational (due to inflation) lack of material resources were associated with harsher moral judgments. The effect of inflation was stronger for low-income individuals, whom inflation renders relatively more vulnerable. In a …

Joint Product Improvement By Client And Customer Support Center: The Role Of Gain-Share Contracts In Coordination, Shantanu Bhattacharya, Alok Gupta, Sameer Hasija Mar 2014

Joint Product Improvement By Client And Customer Support Center: The Role Of Gain-Share Contracts In Coordination, Shantanu Bhattacharya, Alok Gupta, Sameer Hasija

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study the role of different contract types in coordinating the joint product improvement effort of a client and a customer support center. The customer support center's costly efforts at joint product improvement include transcribing and analyzing customer feedback, analyzing market trends, and investing in product design. Yet this cooperative role must be adequately incentivized by the client, since it could lead to fewer service requests and hence lower revenues for the customer support center. We model this problem as a sequential game with double-sided moral hazard in a principal-agent framework (in which the client is the principal). We follow …

Speculating On Home Improvements, Hyun Soo Choi, Harrison Hong, Jose Scheinkman Mar 2014

Speculating On Home Improvements, Hyun Soo Choi, Harrison Hong, Jose Scheinkman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We develop a speculation-based theory of home improvements. Housing services are produced from a mix of land and structures. Homeowners have an option to increase their structures (i.e. make improvements) holding fixed their land. Speculative improvements arise because overconfident homeowners mistakenly believe they can add to structures for a lower cost than a competitive construction industry. Improvements are increasing and convex in home prices. There is excessive home remodeling in equilibrium. And the change in the recoup ratio (the ratio of resale value of improvements to construction costs) is negatively correlated with construction cost growth controlling for home price appreciation. …

Forecasting The Equity Risk Premium: The Role Of Technical Indicators, Christopher J. Neely, David E. Rapach, Jun Tu, Guofu Zhou Mar 2014

Forecasting The Equity Risk Premium: The Role Of Technical Indicators, Christopher J. Neely, David E. Rapach, Jun Tu, Guofu Zhou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Academic research relies extensively on macroeconomic variables to forecast the U.S. equity risk premium, with relatively little attention paid to the technical indicators widely employed by practitioners. Our paper fills this gap by comparing the predictive ability of technical indicators with that of macroeconomic variables. Technical indicators display statistically and economically significant in-sample and out-of-sample predictive power, matching or exceeding that of macroeconomic variables. Furthermore, technical indicators and macroeconomic variables provide complementary information over the business cycle: technical indicators better detect the typical decline in the equity risk premium near business-cycle peaks, whereas macroeconomic variables more readily pick up the …

Distributionally Robust Mixed Integer Linear Programs: Persistency Models With Applications, Xiaobo Li, Karthik Natarajan, Chung-Piaw Teo, Zhichao Zheng Mar 2014

Distributionally Robust Mixed Integer Linear Programs: Persistency Models With Applications, Xiaobo Li, Karthik Natarajan, Chung-Piaw Teo, Zhichao Zheng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper, we review recent advances in the distributional analysis of mixed integer linear programs with random objective coefficients. Suppose that the probability distribution of the objective coefficients is incompletely specified and characterized through partial moment information. Conic programming methods have been recently used to find distributionally robust bounds for the expected optimal value of mixed integer linear programs over the set of all distributions with the given moment information. These methods also provide additional information on the probability that a binary variable attains a value of 1 in the optimal solution for 0–1 integer linear programs. This probability …

Rational Information Leakage, Hai Lu, Raffi Indjejikian, Liyan Yang Mar 2014

Rational Information Leakage, Hai Lu, Raffi Indjejikian, Liyan Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Empirical evidence suggests that information leakage in capital markets is common. We present a trading model to study the incentives of an informed trader (e.g., a well informed insider) to voluntarily leak information about an asset's value to one or more independent traders. Our model shows that, while leaking information dissipates the insider's information advantage about the asset's value, it enhances his information advantage about the asset's execution price relative to other informed traders. The profit impact of these two effects are countervailing. When there are a sufficient number of other informed traders, the profit impact from enhanced information dominates. …

Exploring Hotel Website Effectiveness By Hotel Class, Michael Musante Mar 2014

Exploring Hotel Website Effectiveness By Hotel Class, Michael Musante

AMTP Proceedings 2014

The internet is an increasingly important communication and distribution channel for hotels. More than ever before consumers are making reservation decisions strictly on their experience with the hotel website. Given this, it is critical for hotels pay close attention to the effectiveness of their online presentation. This premise would seemingly hold true for lodging facilities at all price point levels. The purpose of the study was to examine website effectiveness for hotels of various class levels. In the study, hotels were segmented based on level of accommodation using the “Star Rating” system. Each hotel website was evaluated on a number …

An Indigenous Women Perspective Of Work And Organisation: The Maya Way, Jennifer Manning, J. Miguel Imas, Paul Donnelly Mar 2014

An Indigenous Women Perspective Of Work And Organisation: The Maya Way, Jennifer Manning, J. Miguel Imas, Paul Donnelly

Conference papers

Western literature in management/organisation studies focuses primarily on gender issues that affect inequalities experienced by women at work. Adopting, in some cases, critical and feminist theoretical positions, the gender debate unfolds questions on the prevailing male discourse that is dominant in management and business organisations. Most of these theoretical assumptions tend to influence, subsequently, the way in which we understand the experiences of women in the developing or under-developed world. That is, these theoretical positions occupy a privileged voice upon which to write, describe and analyse the experiences of women in contexts where these Western discourses seem either alien or …

Mirrors: 'Bleeding' The Creation Of Alternative Organization Through A Liberating Ideology Of Transformative Humanism, Alia Weston, J. Miguel Imas, Paul Donnelly

Conference papers

In this paper, we propose a new way of explaining the everyday practices of communities who socially organize to create sustainable grass-roots engagement. We discuss how this collective engagement is based on principles and values of socio-economic engagement that are fundamentally different to those associated with capitalism. We theorise that these community engagements are sustained by an organizational ideology of 'transformative humanism' that is founded on an ongoing struggle for emancipation. Our perspective is constructed through a combination of Frantz Fanon's ideas on humanism, Manfred Max-Neef's barefoot economics, and Paulo Freire's pedagogies of hope and transformation. We suggest that movements …

Are We Really Going Green Part Three, Craig G. Harms Mar 2014

Are We Really Going Green Part Three, Craig G. Harms

AMTP Proceedings 2014

This paper is a second follow-up to “Green, Part One” and “Green Part Two.” In Part One the topic of Interrupted Time Series (ITS) is used to develop a multiple regression model to predict the usage of electricity at the author’s home. In the second paper a multiple regression model is developed to predict water usage in the home. The third paper is a follow-up paper after some of the data in the second paper was found to be spurious. This third paper not only cleans up the bad data, but looks at the proper usage of ITS versus a …

Cultivating High-Level Organizational Engagement To Promote Novel Learning Experiences In Steam, Chad Mote, Karen Strelecki, Kate Johnson Feb 2014

Cultivating High-Level Organizational Engagement To Promote Novel Learning Experiences In Steam, Chad Mote, Karen Strelecki, Kate Johnson

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

Traditional partnerships in K-12 public education often produce low-level organizational engagement among its partners—one partner funds, the other uses the funds Typically a “partner in education” donates funds, which may benefit students through the purchase of new equipment, staff development experiences, or scholarships. In some cases, an organization may send an expert over to speak with the students about their field. This type of philanthropic outreach is indispensable for schools that need additional support and important for students to gain information from the “real world” but does not necessarily translate into deep, meaningful academic impact.

Evaluating Conflict Between Employees: Exploring The Costs To An Organization, David Cross Ph.D., Scott W.M. Burrus Ph.D., Melanie Shaw Ph.D. Feb 2014

Evaluating Conflict Between Employees: Exploring The Costs To An Organization, David Cross Ph.D., Scott W.M. Burrus Ph.D., Melanie Shaw Ph.D.

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Conflicts between employees result in decreased job satisfaction, negative relationships within the organization, and a loss of employee commitment to both the organization and the specific job performed. Workplace conflicts have high costs to businesses. In aviation, the results of conflict can be deadly. The Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) is designed to help people learn practical strategies to mitigate conflict. A sample of 228 people from the aviation industry completed a pre-training survey, participated in scenario-based SDI training, and then completed a post-training survey regarding the effectiveness of the SDI to help them manage conflict. Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance …
