Building A Successful Publishing Company, Joshua M. Buechner
Building A Successful Publishing Company, Joshua M. Buechner
Senior Honors Theses
Abstract
In the present book publishing industry, it is becoming increasingly difficult for traditional book publishing companies to compete and adapt due to the changing structure of the industry. By examining the history and industry of book publishing and lessons from Disney, TOMS Shoes, and the film industry, a feasible business strategy will be formulated for a book publishing company. Trends such as the rise in self-publishers and the balance between print books and eBooks are dramatically changing the industry environment, shifting the power towards authors more than ever before. Where once the only way to publish was through a …

Estimating The Effect Of Home Court Advantage On Wins In The Nba, Jason Kotecki, Robert Leekley, Faculty Advisor
Estimating The Effect Of Home Court Advantage On Wins In The Nba, Jason Kotecki, Robert Leekley, Faculty Advisor
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
What is the effect of home court advantage in the National Basketball Association (NBA)? Based on the Economic Theory of Professional Sports and the concept of shirking, teams should perform better at home than they do on the road. Descriptive statistics support this expectation. Therefore it is hypothesized that a home court advantage exists through the selected variables of attendance, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, fouls called by the referee, and days of rest. Following every NBA team and every game played over a three year span (2008-2011), this paper examines the probability of producing a win at home …

Don’T Blame The Messenger! Political Advertising, Voter Attributions, And The 2012 Presidential Election, Karen M. Lancendorfer
Don’T Blame The Messenger! Political Advertising, Voter Attributions, And The 2012 Presidential Election, Karen M. Lancendorfer
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA)
Over the last twenty years, political advertising has surpassed news and other traditional political sources as the most important source of voting information. Its role has been increasingly critical to election outcomes, as party-based campaigns have been transformed into media-based ones. Political ads work to set the public agenda for a campaign and help candidates shape the impressions voters have of them. Given the effect on public policies and elected officials that voting decisions have, it is important to understand how campaign advertising influences voter attitudes and behaviors.
As political advertising has grown, a substantial body of research has considered …

Location, Location, Location, The Impact Of Registered Sex Offenders On Home Sale Prices: A Case Study Of Mclean County, Illinois, John C. Navarro, Cara Rabe-Hemp
Graduate Research - Criminal Justice
Borrowing from the broken windows theory, this paper addresses the impact of sex offenders’ residences on neighborhood’s property values in McLean County, Illinois. Three data sets were combined to explore the relationship: the addresses of registered sex offenders (RSOs) in McLean County, Illinois, the location and property characteristics of homes sold in McLean County between December 2012 to December 2013, and variables from the 2010 U.S. Census. ArcGIS was utilized to create buffers up to 0.2 of a mile around a sold home to measure the concentration of RSOs and sexual predators (SPs) and to calculate the distance from the …

Framing Identity & Change In The Experience Of Interns, Bryleigh Loughlin
Framing Identity & Change In The Experience Of Interns, Bryleigh Loughlin
Honors Theses
The definition and framing of identity in scholarly work often focuses how an individual conducts identity work in response to identity regulation in order to construct a coherent self. This study expands upon this framework by illuminating the ways that undergraduate interns frame what identity is and the consequences of their framing for their resulting identity construction (identity work). Based on in-depth qualitative interviews, this study demonstrates how participants either framed identity as a stable entity or fluid construct. This study encourages the exploration and discovery of the colloquial ways workers define and discuss identity, so that scholars can understand …
Technology Acceptance In A Mandatory Environment: A Test Of An Integrative Pre-Implementation Model., Mohanned Al-Arabiat
Technology Acceptance In A Mandatory Environment: A Test Of An Integrative Pre-Implementation Model., Mohanned Al-Arabiat
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Technology acceptance has been studied extensively within the IS discipline. The introduction of the technology acceptance model (TAM) has given researchers the opportunity to produce a vast body of knowledge; however, existing gaps within the technology acceptance literature warrant further investigation of these understudied areas. Namely, few if any have studied end users’ acceptance of newly implemented technologies within organizational contexts before end-users start using the technology. Additionally, leadership is one of the areas that has not yet been sufficiently integrated with the technology acceptance literature. The Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory with its roots in the social exchange theory offers …

A Multilevel Analysis Of Problem-Based Learning Design Characteristics, Kimberly S. Scott
A Multilevel Analysis Of Problem-Based Learning Design Characteristics, Kimberly S. Scott
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
The increasing use of experience-centered approaches like problem-based learning (PBL) by learning and development practitioners and management educators has raised interest in how to design, implement and evaluate PBL in that field. Of particular interest is how to evaluate the relative impact of design characteristics that exist at the individual and team levels of analysis. This study proposes and tests a multilevel model of PBL design characteristics. Participant perceptions of PBL design characteristics are used to examine PBL reactions and perceived learning outcomes. Findings affirm the importance of problem design characteristics and effective team facilitation, while raising new questions about …

Autobiographical Life Experiences: Counterfactual Thinking And Meaning, Weston Hadlock, Dr. Katie Liljenquist
Autobiographical Life Experiences: Counterfactual Thinking And Meaning, Weston Hadlock, Dr. Katie Liljenquist
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The initial goal of this study was to explore the different effects of counter-factual thinking on one’s assignment of meaning to life. The creation of these ‘what-if’ scenarios for many people has often been associated with regret. We, however, hypothesized that constructing these mental alternatives may instead lead to the perception that the path life took was meaningful because the contrast underscores the opportunities, relationships, and achievements that would not have occurred without these key elements in one’s life narrative.
Understanding Entrepreneurial Opportunity Via Differentiated Bertrand Oligopoly Market Structure, Colton Hicks, Dr. Nile Hatch
Understanding Entrepreneurial Opportunity Via Differentiated Bertrand Oligopoly Market Structure, Colton Hicks, Dr. Nile Hatch
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this paper we develop a method to be able to recognize opportunity for a new entrant in a Bertrand Oligopoly market based upon industrial organization. We infer from the demand curves of competitors if opportunity for a new entrant exists and the necessary characteristics of the entrant that would make it successful in a given market. This provides a significant contribution to the field of entrepreneurship since it has struggled to find a bona fide way to define and identify opportunity. Most research on entrepreneurial opportunity has focused on the characteristics of the product being developed, e.g., what are …

The Earlier The Longer: How Disproportionate Time Is Spent On Patients Discussed Early In Attending Physicians’ End-Of-Week Handoffs, Lyndon Garrett, Dr. Curtis Lebaron
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Hospital handoffs have been recognized by both regulators and researchers as a locus of potential communication failure with risks to patient safety and quality of care. The initial objectives of my orca grant research were to explore the roles of both the incoming and outgoing physicians in the successful accomplishment of a shift-change patient handoff. As we got into our study, we realized an important oversight in the literature. While most empirical studies on shift-change have been done in settings where multiple patients are transferred, theoretical discussions in the literature have focused on how best to hand off a single …

Leveraging The Collective Intelligence Of A Large Group In Managerial Decision-Making, James Carlson, Dr. Teppo Felin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Crowdsourcing is a term used to describe an emerging new set of activities that organizations engage in to leverage the power of the Internet in bringing people together. Crowdsourcing generally consists of placing some type of “open call” on the internet. People around the globe with internet access then respond to the call. Some collaborate and/or compete to create new ideas, services, or products on behalf of an existing company. Others refine existing work or data, such as through feedback, data entry, or proof-reading.

The Effectiveness Internal Auditing Has To Help Improving Companies, Kelsey Miller
Honors Theses
Internal auditing is an independent consulting activity done within the company to insure and improve a company’s operation. The thesis is going to look at, if internal auditing has good effectiveness and efficiency in helping improve companies. Can internal auditing help a company stay on the right track? In the past, there has been much fraud, lies, scandals made by big companies, like Enron and Worldcom. These upsets have cost investors billions of dollars when the share prices of affected companies collapsed. Internal auditing should be able to know what is going on in the company and create ways to …
Community Affair: The Effect Of Public Consumption On Cooperation In Redistribution Markets, Jowanza Joseph, Dr. Sterling Bone
Community Affair: The Effect Of Public Consumption On Cooperation In Redistribution Markets, Jowanza Joseph, Dr. Sterling Bone
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this research we set out to understand why people choose to trade in redistribution markets. We define a redistribution market as a market where people swap good-for-good, and no cash exchanges take place. Economic theory predicts that individuals would be reluctant to trade dissimilar items (e.g. a book for a cd player). Given that trades of this sort take place in venues like swap.com and bookings.com; online sites where people trade hundreds of items per day, we sought to find a theory that would explain this behavior. Our hypothesis is that the way individuals value their goods (inferred value …
