Corporate Social Responsibility: A Case Study On Carlsberg, Anne Sofie Brusendorff
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
In today’s business environment corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability are extremely influential in a firm’s competitiveness. A literature review will provide an analysis of past cases illustrating the importance of CSR, considering both positive and negative impacts CSR strategy can have on business success. Furthermore, important definitions and terminology critical to understanding CSR will be highlighted. This paper explores the evolution of CSR and provides a general overview of the effects CSR can have on a company’s reputation. The way a company can effectively utilize a CSR-strategy as a competitive advantage is also examined, along with scholarly views both …
White Space: An Overlooked Element Of Design, Samantha Coates
White Space: An Overlooked Element Of Design, Samantha Coates
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
There are many different elements used to enhance visual appeal in Advertising and Graphic design. While all elements of design are important, arranging all of these components effectively, affects the overall visual appeal to viewers. The use of space may be thought of as the single, most important element of design. How things are arranged contributes to how effective an advertisement is to its audience. While space is important, it is also vastly taken for granted, specifically in the form of “white space.” Whitespace is important to visual appeal in many ways. This includes readability, viewer perception of brand image, …
Visual Tension In Graphic Design, Raven Heinstein
Visual Tension In Graphic Design, Raven Heinstein
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
My thesis explores the use of visual tension in various graphic design areas and works. It delves into the purposes of creating visual tension and in which instances it can be most effective, as well as most ineffective. It discusses the use and creation of visual tension with design hierarchy, rhythm and dynamics, symmetry and asymmetry, negative and positive space, color relationships, and typographical design. I will define visual tension, discuss its relevance and significance, and show informative examples. I'm using mainly secondary research in the form of textbooks and examples by other designers, but I have also included a …

Rebranding The Wku Office Of Sustainability, Mary Boothe
Rebranding The Wku Office Of Sustainability, Mary Boothe
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Since its inception in 2008, the WKU Office of Sustainability has struggled with general program and initiative awareness as well as student engagement in university sponsored sustainability activities. Attempts to target and capture an audience have been inconsistent due to lack of budget and staff, resulting in varying levels of success. The purpose of this project is to identify, through a population survey, a student market that is interested but unaware of the information, services, and initiatives provided by the WKU Office of Sustainability. Once identified, the market was assessed using statistical data and focus groups to determine the most …
Market Frictions And The Efficiency Of Capital Allocation, William J. Hippler Iii
Market Frictions And The Efficiency Of Capital Allocation, William J. Hippler Iii
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The following dissertation contains two unique empirical studies that contribute to the overall literature in the field of Financial Economics in the areas of mutual fund investing and financial intermediation and regulation. The first Chapter, entitled “The Impact of Macroeconomic Stress on the U.S. Financial Sector”, examines the relative impact of macroeconomic stress on financial and non-financial U.S. firms. Empirical results show that macroeconomic shocks appear to have a larger impact on financial firms. Additionally, the sensitivity of financial firms to macroeconomic events can be traced to the influence of non-depository institutions, or “shadow banks”, like finance and investment companies, …
Two Essays In Finance: Analyzing The Value Of Cash To U.S. And Non-U.S. Firms And Institutional Trading In Stock Index Futures, Li Xu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In the first chapter, we analyze the role of market development, risk premium, and transparency as factors influencing the value of cash in firms listed as American Depository Receipts. Based on the method by Pinkowitz and Williamson (2002), our primary results are as follows. The market value of cash is greater on average for ADR firms than for U.S. firms, and within the ADR sample the value of cash is greater for firms based in less developed countries after 2007 financial crisis but not before. Together, the results suggest that the market development is especially important during more volatile periods. …
Risky Business: Recommendations For The Insurance Industry To Contribute To Greater Disaster Risk Reduction And Climate Change Adaptation, Jessie G. Rountree
Risky Business: Recommendations For The Insurance Industry To Contribute To Greater Disaster Risk Reduction And Climate Change Adaptation, Jessie G. Rountree
Master's Projects and Capstones
The private insurance industry is susceptible to increasing risk from climate change and can serve as a catalyst to change behavior to minimize loss. The research examined the current impact and future potential of the insurance industry to reduce both physical and financial risk. The insurance industry currently raises awareness, assigns an economic value to risk, advocates for climate change action, and takes measures to reduce physical risk through mitigation. As well, the industry has proven to be a critical influencer to encourage risk-adverse behavior and regulation. Recommendations to the industry to have a greater impact include: 1) pursue more …

College football has become much more than a sport for the athletes who play it and entertainment for the fans who watch it. In college football, especially for Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools, winning has become a way to make money. However, in order to make money, people must spend money. In a college football program money is spent on a multitude of things. This study focuses on two important factors, coaches' salaries and recruiting budgets. Strategic Analysis Of Casino Expansion Into Massachusetts, Nicole Sherman
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The purpose of this project was to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each resort casino proposal for Massachusetts and recommend the best choice for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to select. Presently there are three companies competing for a Category 1 gaming license in Massachusetts; MGM in Springfield is the sole candidate for the Western Massachusetts region, and Wynn in Everett is competing against Mohegan Sun in Revere for a license in the Eastern Massachusetts area. Information for this project was collected by attending public meetings with presentations from casino representatives, town officials, and the Gaming Commission. A literature search …

Appropriation Or Participation Of The Individual In Knowledge Management, Isabel D. W. Rechberg, Jawad Syed
Publications and Research
Purpose- This review paper examines whether there is a tendency towards appropriation or participation of the individual in the literature of knowledge management (KM).
Design/methodology/approach- This is a literature review paper. In terms of approach, appropriation in this paper is referred to as the KM tasks assigned to individual employees by the management whereas participation is referred to as KM tasks determined jointly by individuals and management.
Findings- The review suggests that while the participation of individuals is seen as important for KM, the KM discourse and practice is visibly oriented towards the appropriation of individual employees and their knowledge …

Disclosure Policy And Industry Fluctuations, Jeremy Bertomeu, Pierre Jinghong Liang
Olin Business School Faculty Research
This paper examines voluntary disclosures in a repeated oli gopoly and their association with price-setting behavior and industry profits along indu strial fluctuations. The analysis focuses on the collectively optimal equilibrium among olig opoly firms. We show that, in industries that are highly concentrated or feature low co st of capital, no-disclosure is prevalent and results in stable product prices and high profi t margins. Otherwise, firms may selectively disclose to soften competition in the product m arket. Under partial disclosure, firms withhold information during sharp industry expansion s or declines. Consequently, the disclosure policy dampens the dissemination of shocks …
An Hsi Fact Sheet: The Environmental, Public Health, And Social Impacts Of Pig Factory Farming, Humane Society International
An Hsi Fact Sheet: The Environmental, Public Health, And Social Impacts Of Pig Factory Farming, Humane Society International
HSI FACT SHEETS
Since the mid-20th century, small, extensive farms have given way to massive, commercial pig production facilities. In 2009, more than 1.3 billion pigs were raised and slaughtered globally. Between 1980 and 2000, though world pork production nearly doubled, there was a decrease in the total number of farms. Large industrial farm animal production facilities, or factory farms, that often confine thousands of pigs indoors, are becoming more widespread throughout the world, particularly in developing countries. Factory farms are now responsible for more than half of all global pork production.
A significant implication of the shift toward factory farms has been …
An Hsi Fact Sheet: Biosecurity Challenges Of Industrial Farm Animal Production, Humane Society International
An Hsi Fact Sheet: Biosecurity Challenges Of Industrial Farm Animal Production, Humane Society International
HSI FACT SHEETS
Industrial farm animal production (IFAP) has become increasingly common throughout the world. Worldwide, industrial systems now account for approximately two-thirds of poultry meat production and half of egg and pig meat production, with developing countries already producing approximately half of the world’s industrial pork and poultry by 2006.
Inherent design and operational requirements of IFAP facilities can create biosecurity problems with both bioexclusion and biocontainment—efforts to prevent the respective influx and efflux of pathogens. These may help explain why large commercial flocks may be up to 10,000 times more likely to report outbreaks with pathogens such as highly pathogenic avian …
Fees Matter, Steven D. Dolvin
Fees Matter, Steven D. Dolvin
All Chapters
A 1% annual fee doesn't sound like much, but when compounded, fees paid to advisors and managers can have a significant impact on an investor's ending portfolio value. For example, consider two investors who each invest $200,000 and earn 8%/year (before fees) for 30 years. The first investor uses an ETF that charges 0.04%/year in fees, while the second investor uses a mutual fund charging 1.25%/year. The first investor ends with roughly $2 million, while the second nets about $1.4 million. The difference is purely driven by fees -- this is a huge cost. (See article here, Wall Street …
