Underpricing And Buy And Hold Abnormal Returns In Venture Capitals' Portfolio Firm Ipos, Abdelhamid Riani Aug 2014

Underpricing And Buy And Hold Abnormal Returns In Venture Capitals' Portfolio Firm Ipos, Abdelhamid Riani

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

I seek to explore in detail the relationship between Venture Capitals (VC) characteristics and the underpricing and long-run performance of their portfolio firms overtime using a sample of 2,052 IPO firm-year observations, corresponding to 669 unique U.S.VCs from 1985-2013. Gompers (1996) and Lee and Wahal (2004) focus on individual portfolio firms and relate the performance of these firms in IPOs to the VCs that back these firms, I focus on the VCs themselves as individual entities and examine how their whole portfolio of IPOs fares. I find that the more experienced the VC is, the larger the underpricing and the …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of A University Response To Crisis, Katherine M. Kelley Aug 2014

Stakeholder Perceptions Of A University Response To Crisis, Katherine M. Kelley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to contribute to current theory-driven research in crisis communication by examining the perceptions of multiple stakeholder groups to a university crisis response strategy. Two main questions were examined in this dissertation. The first question attempted to determine if a significant difference existed between stakeholder groups and their perception of university reputation, responsibility for the crisis, and potential supportive behaviors toward the university following the university’s response to a crisis. The second asked if Coombs’s Situational Crisis Communication Theory is a practical application for universities.

The participants were from 4 stakeholder groups associated with a …

Aging Populations And Management: From The Editors, Carol T. Kulik, Susan Ryan, Sarah Harper, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The human population is aging at a rate “without parallel in the history of humanity” (United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, 2001: xxviii). The aging of the world population is driven by two trends. First, there has been a dramatic increase in life expectancy. In the United Kingdom, for example, 10 million people are over 65 years old (roughly, 1 in 6 individuals). The latest projections are for 5½ million more elderly people in 20 years' time, and the number will have nearly doubled to around 19 million (roughly, 1 in 4 individuals) by 2050 (Cracknell, …

The Too-Much-Talent Effect: Team Interdependence Determines When More Talent Is Too Much Or Not Enough, Roderick I. Swaab, Michael Schaerer, Eric M. Anicich, Richard Ronay, Adam D. Galinsky Aug 2014

The Too-Much-Talent Effect: Team Interdependence Determines When More Talent Is Too Much Or Not Enough, Roderick I. Swaab, Michael Schaerer, Eric M. Anicich, Richard Ronay, Adam D. Galinsky

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Five studies examined the relationship between talent and team performance. Two survey studies found that people believe there is a linear and nearly monotonic relationship between talent and performance: Participants expected that more talent improves performance and that this relationship never turns negative. However, building off research on status conflicts, we predicted that talent facilitates performance—but only up to a point, after which the benefits of more talent decrease and eventually become detrimental as intrateam coordination suffers. We also predicted that the level of task interdependence is a key determinant of when more talent is detrimental rather than beneficial. Three …

How Microlending Affects Innovation And Entrepreneurship: Evidence From Ethiopia, Robert Hirth Aug 2014

How Microlending Affects Innovation And Entrepreneurship: Evidence From Ethiopia, Robert Hirth

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Advocates of microlending suggest it is a sustainable intervention that reaches the poor directly and offers them the means to invest and improve their incomes (Khavul, 2010; Morduch, 1999; Yunus, 2007); yet, impact studies of these interventions have suggested they often have little or even a detrimental impact on borrowers (Van Rooyen, Stewart & De Wet, 2012). This dissertation examines the efforts to promote entrepreneurship and alleviate poverty in developing countries through microlending. I begin by reviewing the microlending literature, and in particular, impact studies of the effect microlending is having in developing countries. Next, I review theory and empirical …

Using Bayesian Method To Estimate The Parameters Of Exponential Growth Model With Autocorrelation Problem And Different Values Of Parameter Of Correlation-Using Simulation, Saifaldin Hashim Kamar Aug 2014

Using Bayesian Method To Estimate The Parameters Of Exponential Growth Model With Autocorrelation Problem And Different Values Of Parameter Of Correlation-Using Simulation, Saifaldin Hashim Kamar

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

We have studied Bayesian method in this paper by using the modified exponential growth model, where this model is more using to represent the growth phenomena. We focus on three of prior functions (Informative, Natural Conjugate, and the function that depends on previous experiments) to use it in the Bayesian method. Where almost of observations for the growth phenomena are depended on one another, which in turn leads to a correlation between those observations, which calls to treat such this problem, called Autocorrelation, and to verified this has been used Bayesian method. The goal of this study is to knowledge …

The Impact Of Managerial Styles And Job Satisfaction On Employee Turnover In The Hospitality Industry, Amanda Ayres Aug 2014

The Impact Of Managerial Styles And Job Satisfaction On Employee Turnover In The Hospitality Industry, Amanda Ayres

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The hospitality industry in Las Vegas is a business that relies heavily on the competences of their employees. Unique to this industry, is the delivery of experiences rather than actual products or tangible goods. Due to the nature of this business, management styles, employee retention and standards of the employees are of the utmost importance to employers (Faldetta, Fasone and Provenzano, 2013). In summary, the stability among employees becomes an essential characteristic of the positive functionality of a hospitality organization. The irony in this is that high, employee turnover rates are common to these corporations. Employee turnover is a component …

Have Capital Market Anomalies Attenuated In The Recent Era Of High Liquidity And Trading Activity?, Tarun Chordia, Avanidhar Subrahmanyam, Qing Tong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine whether the recent regime of increased liquidity and trading activity is associated with attenuation of prominent equity return anomalies due to increased arbitrage. We find that the majority of the anomalies have attenuated and the average returns from a portfolio strategy based on prominent anomalies have approximately halved after decimalization. We provide evidence that hedge fund assets under management, short interest and aggregate share turnover have led to the decline in anomaly-based trading strategy profits in recent years. Overall, our work indicates that policies to stimulate liquidity and ameliorate trading costs improve capital market efficiency.

A Template For Invention: Renewing & Recycling Knowledge Components, Tufool Alnuaimi, Gerard George, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We explore how old technologies can be recombined to generate new inventions. We consider four ways by which old technologies can serve as templates: subtraction, reconfiguration, addition, and replacement. Subtraction and reconfiguration do not require changing a prior combination of components, whereas for the latter two, new components are introduced. We test these ideas using patent data from the US semiconductor industry. The study’s findings suggest that re-using previous combinations results in higher impact. However, not all prior technologies are equally useful; inventions that recombine components from recently developed technologies were found to have a higher impact. We also show …

Explaining Implicit And Explicit Affective Linkages In It Teams: Facial Recognition, Emotional Intelligence, And Affective Tone, Mary M. Dunaway

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over 80 percent of task work in organizations is performed by teams. Most teams operate in a more fluid, dynamic, and complex environment than in the past. As a result, a growing body of research is beginning to focus on how teams’ emotional well-being can benefit the effectiveness of workplace team efforts. These teams are required to be adaptive, to operate in ill-structured environments, and to rely on technology more than ever before. However, teams have become so ubiquitous that many organizations and managers take them for granted and assume they will be effective and productive. Because of the increased …

The Effect Of Ceo It Expertise On The Information Environment: Evidence From Management Earnings Forecasts, Jacob Zachary Haislip Aug 2014

The Effect Of Ceo It Expertise On The Information Environment: Evidence From Management Earnings Forecasts, Jacob Zachary Haislip

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Firms depend on information technology to provide high quality internal information, but prior research suggests that IT is underutilized (Venkatesh and Bala 2008). Therefore, using a sample of firms with equivalent levels of technology in their information systems, I investigate whether firms that employ CEOs with IT expertise make forecasts that are more accurate. I argue that CEOs with IT expertise are more likely to encourage the utilization of IT in making earnings forecasts, thus increasing the accuracy of the forecasts. This argument is supported by prior research that suggests that people are more likely to utilize technology if they …

The New Lyrics Of The Old Folks: The Role Of Family Ownership In Corporate Innovation, Po-Hsuan Hsu, Sterling Huang, Massimo Massa, Hong Zhang Aug 2014

The New Lyrics Of The Old Folks: The Role Of Family Ownership In Corporate Innovation, Po-Hsuan Hsu, Sterling Huang, Massimo Massa, Hong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

According to conventional wisdom, family ownership, which signals a lack of social capital and trust in an economy, may impede innovation. This argument, however, fails to recognize that modern family firms can benefit from capitalist institutions that promote innovation. Using a comprehensive sample of U.S. family-owned public firms and patents for the period from 2000 to 2010, we show that family ownership promotes innovation and that this positive effect can be attributed to reduced financial constraints, a greater commitment to long-term value, and improved corporate governance. Causality is confirmed by an instrumental variable analysis using the state-level divorce rate and …

Diversified Social Influence Maximization, Fangshuang Tang, Qi Liu, Hengshu Zhu, Enhong Chen, Feida Zhu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

For better viral marketing, there has been a lot of research on social influence maximization. However, the problem that who is influenced and how diverse the influenced population is, which is important in real-world marketing, has largely been neglected. To that end, in this paper, we propose to consider the magnitude of influence and the diversity of the influenced crowd simultaneously. Specifically, we formulate it as an optimization problem, i.e., diversified social influence maximization. First, we present a general framework for this problem, under which we construct a class of diversity measures to quantify the diversity of the influenced crowd. …

Recession And Recovery: Jobs In Nebraska: 2008 To 2012, Randolph L. Cantrell Jul 2014

Recession And Recovery: Jobs In Nebraska: 2008 To 2012, Randolph L. Cantrell

Cornhusker Economics

A commonly used resource for tracking changes in jobs and income at the county level is the Regional Economic Information System (REIS) data base produced annually by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). REIS data are derived from tax filings by employers, employees and the self-employed. The data base has been relatively unchanged (except for a reorganization of industry codes) since 1969. Reporting is always for the tax year two-years previous to the release date, so the data are more about historical than current conditions. However, REIS is generally seen as reliable and does provide a trend line that now …

America’S Transition To New Healthcare Policy: Applying Airline Pricing Models To Healthcare Providers, Westin Leavitt, Dr. Mark Hansen Jul 2014

America’S Transition To New Healthcare Policy: Applying Airline Pricing Models To Healthcare Providers, Westin Leavitt, Dr. Mark Hansen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As America’s healthcare industry becomes increasingly regulated under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the economic effects of regulation are still in question. One of the most puzzling questions is the price at which hospitals and clinics will charge for treatment. Because hospitals’ costs and prices are usually proprietary knowledge, we suspect that hospitals are participating in first-degree price discrimination* to maximize profits. In addition, we seek to explain how the ACA’s partial reimbursement rates cause greater financial stress on hospitals by forcing them to cost shift**.

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

As one of the biggest medicines market in the South East Asia, the pharmaceutical industry in Indonesia has a huge potential market. However, the majority supply of raw materials has been imported. Besides, regulations of the Health Ministry and the Trade Ministry have still hampered most players in Indonesia pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, this study used Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models to analyze efficiency and productivity change in the Indonesian pharmaceutical industry between 2006 and 2011, listed in the Indonesia Stock Exchange and also supported by applying efficiency financial ratio. This study finds that the decision for the most relatively efficient …

Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions In China: A Test Of The Free Cash Flow Hypothesis, Yane Chandera, Lukas Setia Atmaja Jul 2014

Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions In China: A Test Of The Free Cash Flow Hypothesis, Yane Chandera, Lukas Setia Atmaja

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This research investigates whether Chinese cross-border investments have positive impact on shareholders wealth and whether the amount of bidders’ free cash flow influences the shareholder returns resulted from the acquisitions. The sample is based on 77 top Chinese cross-border investments during the years 2005-2009 with each deal value of minimum US$100 million. The assessments of acquisition abnormal returns are based on the event study methodology (Brown & Warner, 1985). Cross-sectional regression analysis is used to determine the bidding firms factors which significantly affect the returns. Factors are examined using OLS with White’s heteroscedasticity-corrected standard errors, since the assumption of homoscedasticity …

Information Security Governance For The Non-Security Business Executive, Michael Whitman, Herbert J. Mattord Jul 2014

Information Security Governance For The Non-Security Business Executive, Michael Whitman, Herbert J. Mattord

Faculty Articles

Information security is a critical aspect of information systems usage in current organizations. Often relegated to the IT staff, it is in fact the responsibility of senior management to assure the secure use and operation of information assets. Most managers recognize that governance is the responsibility of executive management. The primary objective of governance can be achieved when the members of an organization know what to do, how it should be done, as well as who should do it. The focus on governance has expanded to include more aspects of the organizational hierarchy to include information systems and information security. …

Social Supports From Organization And Customer, Jae Won Yoo Jul 2014

Social Supports From Organization And Customer, Jae Won Yoo

Asia Marketing Journal

This study applies the job-demands resource (JD-R) model to investigate the interactive effect of job demands and job resources in predicting the development of service employee work engagement and customer-oriented attitude. This paper proposed a theoretical model that suggests that the service employee`s work engagement is the consequence of the employee`s perceived support from the organization and its customers (customer participation) and leads to a customer-oriented attitude. However, the effect of organizational support is somewhat hindered by job insecurity, demonstrating the inability of an organizationally provided job resource to overcome the job demand of job insecurity. As a type of …
