Much like Jon M. Huntsman, the Huntsman School of Business itself is a giver. The term “giver” comes from Adam Grant’s book Give and Take, where he writes that there are three types of people in the world: takers, matchers, and givers. Takers are those who are always trying to get as much as possible from others. Matchers are those who, if they did you a favor, would expect one back (and vice versa). And then there are the givers — those who go out of their way to support and help you, with no strings attached.

The Silicon Valley approach for building companies has become the main strategy taught at many business schools around the country. It goes like this: You create a prototype you can quickly test, preferably in the tech industry. You find a group of users and gain proof of concept. You raise capital and scale the business as rapidly as possible. You plan an exit strategy that may include going public or selling to an industry buyer. You shoot for a 10X return to investors. You make a lot of money.

International Involvement And Production Efficiency Among Small Beginning Firms, Florence Neymotin, Hyungkee Young Baek Oct 2014

International Involvement And Production Efficiency Among Small Beginning Firms, Florence Neymotin, Hyungkee Young Baek

HCBE Faculty Presentations

In this analysis, we argue that new firms with international sales will experience a smaller variance in their revenues when compared to comparably-aged firms that have only domestic sales. Further, we claim that this will be the case whenever domestic and international sales of a firm are imperfectly correlated, but have identical variances. Since a smaller variance results in better predictability of revenue, international-selling firms will consequently improve their technical productive efficiency. We employ 7,829 firm-year observations from the 2007-2011 years of the Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS) microdata sample in our analysis. A stochastic frontier model empirically supports the result …

Power America's — And Nevada's — Advanced Industries: State By State, Region By Region, Mark Muro

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

With the U.S. economy still flat, economic experts and leaders continue to search for the next source of U.S. and regional growth. One key component of the next era of prosperity can be projected: It is what the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program calls the advanced industry (AI) sector. The nation’s most strategic R&D — and STEM worker intensive industries, AIs like aerospace and IT are prime movers of regional and national prosperity, because they are key sources of technology innovation and generate domestic and international exports. Accordingly, the AI swatch of 50 discrete industries has emerged as an important new …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: November 21, 2014, Eric Thompson, William Walstad Oct 2014

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: November 21, 2014, Eric Thompson, William Walstad

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

Summary: The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) fell by 0.10% during October 2014. The slight decline in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, is the second consecutive decline and suggests that Nebraska economic growth will moderate. In particular, state economic growth is expected to slow in the first four months of 2015. Two components contributed to the decline in the leading economic indicator in October. First, there was a significant increase in the value of the U.S. Dollar. Such an increase reduces the competiveness of exporters in Nebraska and throughout the …

Operating An Interior Design Firm In Saudi Arabia: Opportunities And Challenges For Professional Female Employees, Najah Alsaffaf

Theses and Dissertations

Empowering women is the aim of the research. Saudi Arabia is the research location and interior design is the subject of the investigation. Saudi Arabia is on the path of empowering women through education and facilitating job opportunities. There is vast research about entrepreneurship and obstacles that women face in Saudi Arabia, but there is no evidence of research on the interior design field in Saudi Arabia in both education and job opportunities. Finding out that the art and design scene is thriving in education indicates that there would be a need for creating jobs and employment options for design …

The Implications Of Regional And National Demographic Projections For Future Gms Costs In Ireland Through To 2026, Aisling Conway Lenihan, Martin Keneally, Noel Woods, Andreas Thummel, Marie Ryan Oct 2014

The Implications Of Regional And National Demographic Projections For Future Gms Costs In Ireland Through To 2026, Aisling Conway Lenihan, Martin Keneally, Noel Woods, Andreas Thummel, Marie Ryan

Dept. of Management & Enterprise Publications

As the health services in Ireland have become more resource-constrained, pressure has increased to reduce public spending on community drug schemes such as General Medical Services (GMS) drug prescribing and to understand current and future trends in prescribing. The GMS scheme covers approximately 37% of the Irish population in 2011 and entitles them, inter alia, to free prescription drugs and appliances. This paper projects the effects of future changes in population, coverage, claims rates and average claims cost on GMS costs in Ireland.
