Faculty Articles
An exploratory study of undergraduate students enrolled in marketing courses at a Southeastern regional university was conducted to determine the motivations and characteristics of marketing students who plan to be online learners and examined for differences between those who have taken and those who have not taken online classes. An online survey of Likert scales, openended questions and demographic questions was sent via class learning management websites. A total of 165 students of the 438 invited to participate completed the survey. A structural model was developed using SMART-PLS to estimate the relationships of constructs that predict taking online courses. Results …
Three Essays On Default Risk In Capital Markets, Laleh Samarbakhsh
Three Essays On Default Risk In Capital Markets, Laleh Samarbakhsh
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This dissertation comprises three essays on default risk in capital markets exploring (a) failure risk of hedge funds, (b) pricing in equity option markets, and (c) relationship between option and credit default swap markets, respectively, with a particular focus on the recent financial crisis.
The first essay “The role of Excess Leverage in Hedge Funds Failure” investigates the role of financial leverage, including the use of margins and derivatives, in the hedge funds failure during the 2008 financial crisis. Motivated by failure of the two Bear Sterns hedge funds, this paper examines why some hedge funds failed during and after …
Making Strategic Human Capital Relevant: A Time-Sensitive Opportunity, David Kryscynski, Dave Ulrich
Making Strategic Human Capital Relevant: A Time-Sensitive Opportunity, David Kryscynski, Dave Ulrich
Faculty Publications
The domain of strategic human capital is emerging at the intersection of strategy and strategic human resource management. Because it is still in the development phase, its core underlying assumptions have not yet solidified. This presents a unique and time-sensitive opportunity to explore and challenge these core assumptions and, specifically, to evaluate whether these assumptions mesh with the lived experiences of practicing managers. We argue that now is the time for the field to ground itself in practical phenomena so that its insights moving forward can be both academically rigorous and practically relevant. In this paper we illustrate the problems …

For organizations to achieve the benefits of new IT systems their users must adopt and then actually use these new systems. Recent models help to articulate the potentially different explanations for why some users will adopt and then continue using new technologies, but these models have not explicitly incorporated IT-knowledge. This is particularly important in contexts where the user base may be non-IT professionals—i.e. the users may vary substantially in their basic IT-knowledge. We draw upon psychology to argue that in situations where there is wide variance in actual IT-knowledge there will often exist U relationship between actual and self-perceived …
Ceo Compensation And Tax Loss Carrybacks, Pei-Yu Sun
Ceo Compensation And Tax Loss Carrybacks, Pei-Yu Sun
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Erickson, Heitzman, and Zhang’s (2013) results indicate that firms engage in tax-motivated loss recognition to offset previously recorded income. Since tax and financial income by design is linked (Guenther, Maydew, and Nutter 1997), net operating loss reporting can impose significant costs on CEOs who have to recognize similar losses for financial reporting purposes. As a result, firms must motivate the CEO to accelerate loss recognition if the firm expects to benefit from the cash inflows generated by the tax refund. In the current study, I examine whether CEO cash-based compensation increases to offset the potential negative costs that can arise …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the impact participating in S.T.R.I.P.E.S., a leadership and extended orientation program, had on the philanthropic giving of recent alumni at a research university in the Southeastern United States. The dependent variable for this study was philanthropic giving to the institution during the three years immediately following graduation, as defined by their personal donations as recorded in cumulative giving by the university’s foundation. The goal of the study was to determine to what extent, if any, school leadership development, loyalty, and engagement taught through leadership and extended orientation programs influence the donation behavior of recent graduates. The target …

Examining Male Infertility; The Association Between Age, Environment, And Reproductive Success In Male Patients That Have Participated In Assisted Reproductive Technology, Jeanne Lee Glaser
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As the number and age of human couples turning to assisted reproductive technology (ART) continues to increase, it is essential for clinicians to understand infertility threats related to both female and male patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between age, environment, and reproductive success in male patients having participated in assisted reproductive technology. In corresponding experiments, male infertility variables such as; age, lifestyle exposures, body mass index (BMI), and infertility length with current partner (ILCP) were investigated. A retrospective collection of clinical male patient data from 2011 to 2014 was evaluated. Thirty-five variables were collected …

Study On The Use Of Serious Games In Business Education, Joo Baek Kim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
With rapid advance of information technology (IT), computer-based gaming has flourished for decades. Gaming becomes a part of modern culture, especially among emerging digital generations. In addition to the entertaining purpose, attempts are made to use games for serious purpose, such as education and training. With the genuine characteristics that bring enjoyment, engagement, and context, games are considered good tools for business education and training that support or even may substitute the traditional learning methods. However, there is a dearth of research with regards to the comprehensive view of how people can learn business topics through serious games and transfer …

Two Essays On Institutional Investors And U.S. Bank Holding Companies, Hui Wang
Two Essays On Institutional Investors And U.S. Bank Holding Companies, Hui Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation studies institutional investment in U.S. bank holding companies (BHCs). The first essay examines institutional investing preferences in U.S. banks and the impact of expansion of bank power on the preferences. Institutional investors prefer BHCs that hold more liquid assets, are better capitalized and larger in size, have better loan quality, lower stock return volatility and less derivative trading. In addition, the expansion of bank power is welcomed by various types of institutional investors, except for long-term institutions. Institutional investors also become less risk-averse when investing in BHCs that have expanded into non-banking business. However, the increased complexity and …
Using Academic And Demographic Characteristics To Determine Whether Or Not Admitted Transfer Students Will Enroll In A Four-Year Research-Extensive University In The Southeastern Region Of The United States, Barrett Palmer Linam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Abstract The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether or not selected demographic, academic, and institutional characteristics influence the decision of admitted transfer students to enroll in a research-extensive university in the southeastern region of the United States. The transfer student population is an untapped student population that could help benefit many universities. If these students are targeted like potential freshmen, then universities can increase their enrollment. Being able to identify the correct characteristics for potential transfer students would help conserve resources and maximize the incoming transfer student population. This study used the standards of a research-extensive university …

Work Readiness Among Graduate Students, Raymond Doe
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study explored work readiness among graduate program completers at a Research University (RU/VH) in the Southeastern Region of the United States. Work readiness, although a relatively new construct, is defined as the level to which graduate students are perceived as possessing attitudes and attributes that enable them to be prepared for success in the workforce. Graduate degree-seeking students in universities and colleges are projected to surpass bachelor seeking students in the future. Hiring of graduate degree holders by organizations, however, play a major role in recruitment of new employees. Increasingly, organizations report that recent graduate program completers are insufficiently …

Asset Allocation In The Chinese Stock Market: The Role Of Return Predictability, Jian Chen, Fuwei Jiang, Jun Tu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this article the authors investigate asset allocation in the Chinese stock market from the perspective of incorporating return predictability. Based on a host of return predictors, they find significant out-of-sample return predictability in the Chinese stock market. They then examine the performance of active portfolio strategies—such as aggregate market timing as well as industry, size, and value-rotation strategies—designed to profitably exploit return predictability. Strong evidence is found by the authors that these portfolio strategies incorporating return predictability can deliver superior performance—up to 600 basis points per annum and almost double the Sharpe ratios—compared with the passive buy-and-hold benchmarks that …

Social Entrepreneurship Intentions Of Nonprofit Organizations, Wee Liang Tan, So-Jin Yoo
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Little is known about social entrepreneurship in nonprofit organizations (NPOs), especially about the factors that influence social entrepreneurship intentions at organizational level. Would existing NPOs, as opposed to new ones formed to embark on new social initiatives, strike out into a new territory, or engage in new ventures? What are the necessary internal organizational conditions? This study explores the direct effect of the organizational attributes on a NPO's intention to start a social enterprise. With a sample of 92 charities in Singapore, we found that NPOs led by CEOs with commercial experience, and NPOs possessing high collective efficacy and organization …

Cross-Border Lbos, Cao, Jerry X., Douglas Cumming, Meijun Qian, Xiaoming Wang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper examines the relation between legal conditions and leveraged buyouts (LBOs) in 49 countries. The data indicate that sophisticated PE fund managers carrying out large international LBOs can only partially mitigate costs associated with inefficient legal protections. LBOs are more active in countries with strong creditor rights. Club deals are more likely to occur in countries with weak creditor rights. Cross-border LBO investment is more common from strong creditor rights countries to weak creditor rights countries. Premiums offered to shareholders are on average negatively correlated with creditor rights for both domestic and cross-border LBOs.

Mncs And Csr Engagement In Asia: A Dialectical Model, Angela Ka Ying Mak, Suwichit Chaidaroon, Augustine Pang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Using the Circuit of Culture as a guiding framework, this study highlighted how MNCs in Asian developing countries engage and negotiate with local stakeholders as they implement their CSR initiatives. Twenty-one qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with PR practitioners responsible for CSR projects in Asia. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes related to the framework elements. Results demonstrated how MNCs practice CSR in Asia through the five moments (identity, regulations, production, representations, and consumption). MNCs faced a number of dialectical tensions (e.g. following the country's laws, lack of CSR comprehension among employees, and resistance from the stakeholders). Effective strategies …
Reputation Building Through Failure, Huan Wang, Yi Zhang
Reputation Building Through Failure, Huan Wang, Yi Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
In China, many entrepreneurs receive strong supports each time their business fails. This contradicts existing literature and differs from rare revival elsewhere. The major explanation lies in China’s unfriendly and unstable policy environments, due to which business failure per se cannot discern competence. Therefore, entrepreneurs failing because of policy shocks have the incentive for extra efforts to build reputation of competence and trustworthiness. This mechanism prepares a pool of seasoned entrepreneurs who can help alleviate damages of not only policy shocks, but also such system shocks as business cycle and sector upgrading, and therefore makes the economy more adaptable.

Corporate Social Performance, Analyst Stock Recommendations, And Firm Future Returns, Xueming Luo, Heli Wang, Sascha Raithel, Qinqin Zheng
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study posits that security analysts heed corporate social performance information and factor it into their recommendations to general investors. In particular, as corporate social performance is often uncertain and ambiguous to general investors, analysts may serve as the informational pathway connecting corporate social performance to firm stock returns. Thus, we argue that analyst recommendations mediate the relationship between corporate social performance and firm stock returns. On the basis of not only a qualitative study with literature searches and interviews of stock analysts but also a quantitative study with two longitudinal samples of large firms, we find support for these …

The purpose of this study is to explore the collaborative advantages and relational outcomes that organizations obtain from having strong collaborative relationships. With business competing as supply chains of multiple relationships, the reliance on inter-firm relationships has increased and become central strategy for organizations. Logistics computing technologies in the cloud may facilitate collaboration in the supply chain, although there are conflicting viewpoints regarding cloud viability. This study also evaluates the effect that cloud computing technology has on collaborative advantage and relational outcomes in small and large organizations. The model developed here is based on a cross-disciplinary theoretical perspective, which combines …

The Supreme Court has looked to the rights of corporate shareholders in determining the rights of union members and non-members to control political spending, and vice versa. The Court sometimes assumes that if shareholders disapprove of corporate political expression, they can easily sell their shares or exercise control over corporate spending. This assumption is mistaken. Because of how capital is saved and invested, most individual shareholders cannot obtain full information about corporate political activities, even after the fact, nor can they prevent their savings from being used to speak in ways with which they disagree. Individual shareholders have no “opt …

Smartphones are increasingly penetrating business and consumer markets, and mobile applications (apps) have engendered a large and innovative market. Whereas apps are useful, they also present new forms of privacy risk associated with users’ personal and location data. However, these dangers do not appear to increase the perceived risk or reduce the trust consumers demonstrate when using apps. Many information technology (IT) trust indicators are well documented, such as the quality of the IT, trust assurances, brand recognition and social influences. However, these traditional indicators appear to have a lesser impact on the adoption of mobile commerce via apps because …

Information system designers must consider the influence of users’ intrinsic motivations, in addition to commonly studied extrinsic motivations, to ensure that users will want to continue using the system. In an attempt to acknowledge this need, several studies have extended models of extrinsic motivation to include intrinsic variables. However, these studies largely downplay the role of users’ intrinsic motivations in predicting system use and how this role differs from the role of extrinsic motivation. The role of met or unmet expectations, as a result of system use, is often left out of extant models, and their function as co-creators in …

Although situational judgment tests (SJTs) have a long history in the personnel selection literature, there have been some recent developments in how they are designed, administered, and scored. An SJT is a measurement method typically composed of challenging work-related situations and a list of plausible courses of action. Test takers are asked to evaluate each course of action for either the likelihood that they would perform the action or the effectiveness of the action. In this book chapter, we first briefly review current practice regarding the development of SJTs in personnel selection. We also review evidence concerning reliability, construct-related validity, …

We study the relation between company value and the interplay between CEO power, CEO equity incentives and the friendliness of the board of directors. Following Bebchuk, Cremers and Peyer (2011), we measure CEO power as the proportion paid to the CEO of the total compensation paid to the top five executives of the firm. We find that strong CEO equity incentives and the presence of a friendly board of directors both individually moderate the negative effect of CEO power on Tobin’s q. Moreover, these variables also work together. We find that firm value tends to increase when equity incentives are …
