Ceo Managerial Ability, Corporate Investment Quality, And The Value Of Cash, Huiqi Gan Jan 2015

Ceo Managerial Ability, Corporate Investment Quality, And The Value Of Cash, Huiqi Gan

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates how CEO managerial ability affects investment quality, investment efficiency, and the value of cash. Specifically, I examine whether higher managerial ability is associated with higher M&A quality, more efficient capital investments, and higher value of cash. Investment decision-making and implementation can signal a CEO’s managerial ability (Stein 2003), and shareholders assign more value to the cash of those firms with high ability CEOs. Thus, I predict that more able CEOs conduct higher quality M&A and make more efficient capital investment decisions. I also propose that the value of cash is higher for firms with more able CEOs. …

Intrinsic Motivation And Information Systems Security Policy Compliance In Organizations, Yurita Yakimin Abdul Talib Jan 2015

Intrinsic Motivation And Information Systems Security Policy Compliance In Organizations, Yurita Yakimin Abdul Talib

Theses and Dissertations

Incidents of computer abuse, proprietary information leaks and other security lapses have been on the increase. Most often, such security lapses are attributed to internal employees in organizations subverting established organizational IS security policy. As employee compliance with IS security policy is the key to escalating IS security breaches, understanding employee motivation for following IS security policy is critical. In addition to several types of extrinsic motives noted in prior studies, including sanctions, rewards, and social pressures, this study adds that an important contributing intrinsic factor is empowerment. Per Thomas and Velthouse’s (1990) intrinsic motivation model, empowerment is the positive …

The present study, based on a sample of 321 subjects along with 264 observers, makes five contributions to the entrepreneurship literature. First, I examined the psychometric …

An Actor-Network Theory Approach In Investigating The Information Systems Perspective Of Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Through A Case Study Of The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (Fatca) Implementation In A Jordanian Local Bank, Muhammad Al-Abdullah Jan 2015

An Actor-Network Theory Approach In Investigating The Information Systems Perspective Of Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Through A Case Study Of The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (Fatca) Implementation In A Jordanian Local Bank, Muhammad Al-Abdullah

Theses and Dissertations

Implementation of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) goes beyond a technological modification to automate the identification of US clients and report their information to the IRS. FATCA implementation requires foreign financial institutions (FFIs) to learn the new requirements, to modify their organizational structures and their employees’ relationships and responsibilities, and to adjust the technology that helps the employees collect new FATCA-related information and to process that information so that it can be reported to the IRS in the correct format. In spite of that, research on FATCA implementation has focused on studying each constituent separately. However, according to …

Safety Culture Monitoring: A Management Approach For Assessing Nuclear Safety Culture Health Performance Utilizing Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis, James Harold Warren Jr. Jan 2015

Safety Culture Monitoring: A Management Approach For Assessing Nuclear Safety Culture Health Performance Utilizing Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis, James Harold Warren Jr.

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nuclear power plants are among the most technologically complex of all energy facilities. This complexity reflects the precision needed in design, maintenance and operations to harness the energy of the atom safely, reliably and economically. Nuclear energy thus requires consistent, high levels of organizational performance by the highly skilled professionals who operate and maintain nuclear power plants (Nuclear Energy Institute [NEI], 2014, p. 1).

A key element for achieving consistent, high levels of performance in a nuclear organization is its safety culture. Nuclear safety culture is for an organization what character and personality is for an individual: a feature that …

Push Or Pull? A Website's Strategic Choice Of Content Delivery Mechanism, Dan Ma Jan 2015

Push Or Pull? A Website's Strategic Choice Of Content Delivery Mechanism, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Really simple syndication (RSS) technology enables an alternative delivery mechanism for online content. Instead of waiting passively for users to pull online content out, websites can push it to potential users through RSS. This is expected to significantly affect user behavior, website profitability, and market equilibrium. This research uses an economic model to study the impact of RSS adoption and examine whether it increases a website’s profit and competitive advantage. The findings are intriguing: they demonstrate that RSS can either increase or decrease website profit. In a competitive context, RSS adoption can actually be a disadvantage; in some cases, it …

Three Essays On Remittances, Institutions, And Economic Development, Durga Gautam Jan 2015

Three Essays On Remittances, Institutions, And Economic Development, Durga Gautam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Does the inflow of remittances affect the quality of institutions in the recipient countries? This question is important because economists have stressed that good economic institutions, particularly those in the public sector, are instrumental for economic development and growth. The literature on remittances, however, does not document a thorough analysis and compelling evidence of the relationship between these private financial transfers and institutional quality. Unlike other kinds of international capital flows, remittances inflows are not mediated by the government of recipient countries. Remittances are not taxed directly and so are not a source of revenue for the government. Then a …

The Exchange, Adam Boehm, Jurie Lewis, Bryce Payne, Bob Sassa, Jason Wald Jan 2015

The Exchange, Adam Boehm, Jurie Lewis, Bryce Payne, Bob Sassa, Jason Wald

Real Estate Development Workshop Projects

For this proposal, we assumed the position of respondents to the RFP that PSU will be releasing for the subject property. This proposal begins with an overview of the context of the site historically, spatially. We analyze the neighborhood and features that will help make the development fit within the broader context. Then, we analyze the outlook for each property type and make assumptions about achievable rents, occupancies, etc. Then, we determine what the vision of the development will be based on the foregoing analysis. Finally, we apply that vision to create a development program and determine financial feasibility. We …

The Power Of Brand Love, Marc Fetscherin, Ryan Barker, Jeffery Peacock Jan 2015

The Power Of Brand Love, Marc Fetscherin, Ryan Barker, Jeffery Peacock

Faculty Publications

In this article we would like to respond to Romaniuk’s (2013) Viewpoint article "What’s (brand) love got to do with it?" and provide our point of view regarding brand love. While we agree with some of the limitations she points out in Batra et al.’s (2012) article, and acknowledge them, we disagree with her statement that there is ‘no evidence that building brand love leads to higher market share, sales or profitability’ (Romaniuk 2013, p. 185). It is conceivable that there was no evidence when she wrote the article in 2013. However, as this article illustrates, we have since 2013 …

Media Capabilities That Support Identity Communication In Virtual Teams, David W. Wilson, Sherry M. B. Thatcher, Susan A. Brown Jan 2015

Media Capabilities That Support Identity Communication In Virtual Teams, David W. Wilson, Sherry M. B. Thatcher, Susan A. Brown

Faculty Publications

Virtual teams play an increasingly important role in the modern economy, and many organizations struggle to overcome the weaknesses inherent in technology-mediated work. Identity communication has been shown to greatly improve individual- and group-level outcomes in offline settings, but these benefits have not been investigated in the context of virtual teams, where mediated interaction can reduce the opportunity for identity communication. Building on prior media theories, we develop and test a model explaining how technology can enable identity communication in virtual settings. Using a controlled experiment (N=186), we test our hypotheses and find strong support for the proposed model. Our …

Behaviorally Measuring Ease-Of-Use By Analyzing Users’ Mouse Cursor Movements, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Joseph S. Valacich Jan 2015

Behaviorally Measuring Ease-Of-Use By Analyzing Users’ Mouse Cursor Movements, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Joseph S. Valacich

Faculty Publications

Ease-of-use—the extent to which a technology is free of effort—is a hallmark of many successful websites and is a predictor of important user outcomes including intentions to use a system and a system’s perceived usefulness. We propose a behavior-based measure of ease-of-use based on the analysis of users’ mouse cursor movements. As a basis for this measure, we explain how ease-of-use influences the precision of users’ mouse cursor movements, extending Attentional Control Theory and the Response Activation Model. We propose two mousing statistics—Normalized Area under the Curve and Normalized Additional Distance—and predict that they are correlated with PEOU and can …

Family Leisure: An Integrative Review Of Research From Select Journals, Camilla Hodge, Jason N. Bocarro, Karla A. Henderson, Ramon Zabriskie, Toby L. Parcel, Michael A. Kanters

Faculty Publications

Understanding the relationship between leisure and families has been and will continue to be an important area of study. The purpose of this study is to review existing family leisure research from four select journals between 1990 and 2012. Articles are examined for sample characteristics, methods, analytical approaches, and thematic trends. Overall, 181 articles regarding family leisure, leisure in context of family life or roles, and individual experiences of family leisure are identified. Findings suggest scholars made strides toward expanding methods, analyses, and sampling diversity, though more diversity in sampling and analytical approaches is needed. Three major research themes are …

Conceptualizing Structured Experiences: Seeking Interdisciplinary Integration, Mat D. Duerden, Peter Ward, Patti A. Freeman Jan 2015

Conceptualizing Structured Experiences: Seeking Interdisciplinary Integration, Mat D. Duerden, Peter Ward, Patti A. Freeman

Faculty Publications

While consensus exists around the importance of providing structured experiences, the industries interested in offering such experiences lack a common body of shared knowledge about how most effectively to do so. Potentially complementary research on structured experiences remains fragmented across multiple fields such as leisure, tourism, and marketing. The purpose of this paper, therefore, was first to review and then integrate this scattered literature into a structured experience framework in order to facilitate experience-related research with broader applicability for both commercial and public organizations interested in providing structured experiences.

Two Essays On Ipos And Asset Prices, Gaole Chen Jan 2015

Two Essays On Ipos And Asset Prices, Gaole Chen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the first essay we examine the effect of concurrent lending and underwriting on IPO withdrawal, we find that IPOs underwritten by the firms’ concurrent lending banks are significantly more likely to be withdrawn. The result is robust to controlling for the common factors that affect IPO withdrawal and also for endogeneity using a propensity score matching portfolio. Our evidence suggests a cost to IPO firms’ hiring concurrent lending banks as underwriters despite the potential benefit of informational scope economies such intermediaries may provide. It is consistent with an alternative argument that a current lending and underwriting bank has less …

The “Other” Side Of Wall Street: Banking, Policies, And Adaptive Methods Of U.S. Migrant Workers, Cassandra Rae Decker Jan 2015

The “Other” Side Of Wall Street: Banking, Policies, And Adaptive Methods Of U.S. Migrant Workers, Cassandra Rae Decker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Migrant farmworkers' social and economic mobility is frequently constrained through the denial of basic resources, such as access to the formal financial sector. This thesis ethnographically examines banking policies as they apply to low-income, mobile, populations that temporarily reside in Florida. It utilizes participant observation, interviews, and participatory mapping with migrant farmworkers. It also considers how policymakers and service providers in the formal and informal financial sectors rationalize control of resources and the effects on mobile populations. Particular attention is paid to adaptive practices in the alternative financial sector – cash checking services, carrying cash, and remittances. By utilizing the …

Examining Endorsement And Viewership Effects On The Source Credibility Of Youtubers, Stephanie Fred Jan 2015

Examining Endorsement And Viewership Effects On The Source Credibility Of Youtubers, Stephanie Fred

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The growth of YouTube has resulted in the industrialization of a platform that redefines mainstream success. Success measures such as endorsements and viewership are serving as motivational factors for YouTubers. YouTubers and brands want more views, but are those motivations effecting perception? While much research has focused on the effects that YouTube has on the brand, this study focuses on the effects that the brand has on the YouTuber. It also determines whether viewership affects YouTuber perception and whether it‟s a success measure worth using. Using the constructs of the source credibility theory, this study assessed the main effect of …

Two Essays Examining Organizational Performance, Stacey Alexis Gelsheimer Jan 2015

Two Essays Examining Organizational Performance, Stacey Alexis Gelsheimer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In highly competitive industries where firms aren’t protected by barriers to entry and consumers’ preferences are constantly changing, the willingness and ability to adapt and continually improve operations may be critical for continued success. However, the internal exchanges between employees and managers that may be an integral part of the development and implementation of new ideas are often not modeled or included in our standard economic theories. In this research I investigate whether a higher level of employee voice (or employee input) predicts higher levels of continual improvement, and whether this continual improvement predicts higher levels of firm performance. Additionally, …

How You Categorize Influences How Helpful You Are: The Effect Of Categorization Mindset On Consumers’ Social Decisions, Hsiao-Ching Kuo Jan 2015

How You Categorize Influences How Helpful You Are: The Effect Of Categorization Mindset On Consumers’ Social Decisions, Hsiao-Ching Kuo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates how categorization mindsets (introduced by Ulkumen et al., 2010) moderate the altruistic behavior of consumers in decisions that have consequences to others besides oneself. Categorization mindset refers to a way of thinking about options, and is induced by simple sorting or categorization tasks. Ulkumen et al. (2010) has shown that mindsets can be unidimensional (in terms of being focused on a single, salient dimension) or multidimensional (in that both salient and non-salient dimensions are processed). Across three experiments, this dissertation finds that a multidimensional mindset (compared to a unidimensional mindset) enhances the preference for other-oriented options among …

Analytics And Healthcare Costs (A Three Essay Dissertation), Lina Bouayad Jan 2015

Analytics And Healthcare Costs (A Three Essay Dissertation), Lina Bouayad

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Both literature and practice have looked at different strategies to diminish healthcare associated costs. As an extension to this stream of research, the present three paper dissertation addresses the issue of reducing elevated healthcare costs using analytics. The first paper looks at extending the benefits of auditing algorithms from mere detection of fraudulent providers to maximizing the deterrence from inappropriate behavior. Using the structure of the physicians' network, a new auditing algorithm is developed. Evaluation of the algorithm is performed using an agent-based simulation and an analytical model. A case study is also included to illustrate the application of the …

The Model Of Network Carriers' Strategic Decision Making With Low-Cost Carrier Entry, Tamilla Curtis, Dawna L. Rhoades Jan 2015

The Model Of Network Carriers' Strategic Decision Making With Low-Cost Carrier Entry, Tamilla Curtis, Dawna L. Rhoades

"After deregulation in the United States in 1978, airlines faced intense competition on previously regulated routes. The proponents of deregulation stated that equilibrium in the industry would be achieved by providing lower fares and improved service (Daraban and Fournier, 2008). While this became true to some extent, the airline network in the U.S. was dominated by the hub-and-spoke system and concentrated in the hands of few large airlines. The emergence of the Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) model, which originated in the U.S. through Southwest Airlines in the early 1970s, became an instrument to drive the airlines towards a competitive equilibrium. The …

New Environmental Demands And The Future Of The Helsinki−Tallinn Freight Route, Olli-Pekka Hilmola, Harri Lorentz, Dawna L. Rhoades

Publications

The environmental friendliness of short sea shipping has been justified in Europe by the ensuing lower congestion at hinterlands and unneeded large-scale infrastructure investments on roads and railways. However, the attractiveness of short sea shipping is about to change. This is because of increasing environmental regulations (International Maritime Organization (IMO) sulfur regulation in the Baltic Sea and planned CO2 emissions trading) and increased world market oil prices. In this research, we analyze this potential change using data envelopment analysis on the existing transportation chain alternatives in the Helsinki (Finland)−Tallinn (Estonia) short sea route (chains using either roro, ropax or container …
