Promoter Ownership And Working Capital Management Efficiency Of Indian Manufacturing Firms, John D. Obradovich
Promoter Ownership And Working Capital Management Efficiency Of Indian Manufacturing Firms, John D. Obradovich
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Poor cash flow leads to insolvency of the firm. One of the most important factors that lead to poor cash flow is the inefficiency of working capital management. This study investigates relationships between promoter ownership and working capital management efficiency of Indian manufacturing firms. A sample of 151 manufacturing firms was selected from Top 500 Companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) for a period of five years (from 2010-2014). Results indicate that changes in promoter ownership play a role in changing working capital management efficiency of Indian manufacturing firms by reducing their cash conversion cycle and by improving …
Non-Resident Family Members And The Financial Performance Of Small Businesses In India, John D. Obradovich
Non-Resident Family Members And The Financial Performance Of Small Businesses In India, John D. Obradovich
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent literature in small business management suggests that small businesses are financially constrained. They also face challenges of poor financial performance, which leads to their failure. Literature also shows that family involvement improves small business performance. We asked research participants consisting of small business owners from India about their beliefs and perceptions regarding the relationship between non-resident Indian family members (NRIs), financial support from NRIs, internal financing sources, and the financial performance of small businesses. Results indicate that the involvement of NRIs as foreign directors, financial support from NRIs, and internal financing sources improve the financial performance of small businesses …

Benefits Of Lending Relationships In Public Debt Markets: Empirical Evidence From The Commercial Paper Market, David W. Blackwell, Vladimir Kotomin, Drew B. Winters
Faculty Publications – Finance, Insurance, and Law
There is a large body of literature on the benefits of established lending relationships with banks, which is an intermediated debt market. We extend the literature by testing for benefits from direct lending relationships in the commercial paper market, which is a public debt market. Diamond (1991) suggests that firms access public debt markets when they have enough reputation to no longer require the close monitoring by banks. Using daily rate data for dealer-placed and directly placed commercial paper, we find that the year-end liquidity squeeze is less pronounced in the directly placed commercial paper than in the dealer-placed commercial …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: November 20, 2015, Eric Thompson, William Walstad
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) rose by 1.06% in October 2015. The increase in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, followed a decline during September. Taken together, results for the two months suggest that economic growth will be modest in Nebraska at the beginning of 2016. Most components of the LEI-N improved during October. There was an increase in manufacturing hours and airline passenger counts. There also was a drop in initial claims for unemployment insurance and the value of the U.S. dollar. The decline in the value of the …

Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) was flat in February 2015, rising by just 0.01% during the month. The LEI-N predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future. The flat LEI-N, when combined with solid monthly increases in December 2014 and January 2015, suggest that economic growth in Nebraska will be solid in mid-2015. Three of six components of the leading economic indicator rose during February. Respondents to the Survey of Nebraska Business were optimistic. Respondents predicted a strong increase in employment over the next six months and an increase in sales. There also was a …

Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) rose by 1.99% in April 2015, marking its fourth increase in the last five months. The sharp increase in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, portends strong economic growth in Nebraska in the second half of 2015. Business expectations are one reason for the positive outlook. Respondents to the monthly Survey of Nebraska Business were very optimistic about sales and employment over the next six months. The business outlook, in fact, was the strongest recorded in the monthly survey, which began in September 2011. A …

Materialistic Consumers Who Seek Unique Products: How Does Their Need For Status And Their Affective Response Facilitate The Repurchase Intention Of Luxury Goods?”, Winnie Wing Yin Chan, Chester K.M. To, Alice Wai Ching Chu
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
It is generally known that status consumption fulfils the hedonic needs of luxury goods consumers; affective response generated from the purchase behavior of luxury goods is linked to the display of wealth and symbolic meanings obtained from social standing. However, there is a paucity of studies on how the affective response of consumers influences their repurchase intention of luxury goods. Therefore, in this paper, the repurchase intention of luxury goods consumers is investigated, their motivations are examined, and how status consumption affects their affective response will be demonstrated. The sample in this study comprises 568 survey respondents. The findings show …

The profession of physical education (PE) teacher involves a variety of risks. Most PE teachers or future teachers are aware of the risks associated with their students becoming injured. Sport law classes often discuss negligence, risk management, proper supervision, suitable equipment, appropriate instruction, proper matching of opponents, etc. The focus is primarily or exclusively on student safety. Rarely is the focus on the risks PE teachers face themselves. This article discusses the largely neglected topics of transportation, workplace violence, and slip/trip and falls, all of which are occupational hazards for PE teachers, potentially associated with serious injuries or death.

Mission Impracticable: The Impossibility Of Commercial Impracticability, Jennifer Camero
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “Residents of Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood certainly cannot forget the recent financial crisis thanks to a gaping hole in their midst. That hole is to be the home of the Spire, the tallest building in the Northern Hemisphere, at 2,000 feet high with 1,194 residences ranging in price from $750,000 for a studio to $40 million for the penthouse. The developer, Shelbourne Development Group, Inc., began construction in 2007 using its own funds. It also obtained “starter” funds from Bank of America via a loan agreement that required Shelbourne to demonstrate proof of a construction loan by November 1, 2008. …

We modify the Dynamic Aggregate Demand – Aggregate Supply model in Mankiw’s widely-used Intermediate Macroeconomics textbook to discuss monetary policy when the natural real interest rate is falling. Our results highlight a new role for the central bank’s inflation target as a tool of macroeconomic stabilization. We show that even when the zero lower bound is not binding, a prudent central bank will need to match every decrease in the natural real interest rate with an equal increase in the target rate of inflation in order to stabilize the risk of the economy falling into a deflationary spiral – an …

Destination Competitiveness: A Comparative Study Of Hong Kong, Macau And Singapore, Louise Todd, Anna Leask, Alan Fyall
Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article presents a comparative study of the destination competitiveness of Hong Kong, Singapore, and Macau and those strategies developed to enhance their future positions in the global destination “marketplace.” The methodology adopted is secondary in nature in that a critical review of the existing literature was conducted along with a synthesis of current practices across the three city-state destinations. The 15 Cs Framework provides the research parameters for the study in that it advocates an inclusive approach to those challenges and opportunities facing destinations as they seek to enhance their overall competitiveness. In particular, the study explores the specific …

The Human View collects and categorizes data to provide information and analyses on the human component of a system. This organization of human system data helps to understand what the impact of the technology on human performance may be. The first phase of this project completed exploratory work on different Human View techniques in the context of the Warrior Information Network - Tactical (WIN-T) system. This included creating a high-level diagram to provide a conceptual realization of a General Purpose User (GPU) interacting with the WIN-T system, creating engineering diagrams using the System Modeling Language (SysML) to render the Human …

Peering Into The Future: Three Essays On The Nascent Phenomenon Of Collaborative Consumption, Rebeca Dellegrazie-Perren
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this dissertation is to examine the theoretical and practical implications of the collaborative consumption phenomenon for individuals, businesses and society. To accomplish this goal, a research approach at three levels of analysis is used to explore how market institutions and consumer practices negotiate a social order that combines the social domain of peers with the economic domain of market exchange. The first essay of the dissertation approaches this objective from a macro level to examine how social order is produced and sustained through the systemic interactions of service firms and peers. This essay provides a framework …

Essays On Sales Force Career Incentives, Somnath Banerjee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses game theoretic models in a principal-agent framework to study how firms optimally manage long term career related incentives for their sales people. When sales people put sales effort they face incentives not only from short term incentives like commissions and bonuses but also from long term rewards associated with progression in their career. In particular, sales people are often motivated to get promoted and avoid being laid off, to get selected to managerial positions and to form stronger relationships with customers so that they can bargain for higher wages in the future, respectively. Three different essays examine …

Generation Y Perceptions Of The Traditional Career Model, Aoife Kelliher
Masters
Generation Y will be expected to play the most significant role in the work place as their careers develop and older generations retire. Much of the research carried out on their work related values and career progression to date has relied on the viewpoints of Generation Y as undergraduates, prior to gaining substantial experience in the work place. This study responds to Ng and Gossett’s (2013) call for further research into the values, attitudes and expectations of young people as they will emerge as leaders of tomorrow. The purpose of the study is to examine if the traditional career model …

Flexible Working: What Does It Mean To The Worker And The Workplace?, Paul Kent
Masters
Separation of work and personal life is becoming more difficult. With the advances in technology, the use of personal devices for work, the mobility of work devices and the ability to remotely work for many, this research poses a question. What does Flexible Working mean to the worker and the workplace? Legislatively, Irish workers are protected by the Organisation of Working Time Act (1997). From the evidence in this study, however, this is often a law that is disregarded and has questionable applicability in modern working life. The study looks at how the current worker manages their time and contrasts …
The Willingness-To-Pay For Caplanian Irrationality, Ryan Murphy
The Willingness-To-Pay For Caplanian Irrationality, Ryan Murphy
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
Bryan Caplan’s The Myth of the Rational Voter popularizes the “near-neoclassical” demand curve for irrationality. This article attempts to show that there is a demand for irrationality at prices higher than zero. This may change policy implications. Many instances of consumer behavior, such as paying a premium for locally produced and “fair trade” goods, the use of local currencies, and the failure to vaccinate children, are other instances of the means-ends irrationality that Caplan observes in political markets.
Rational Irrationality Across Institutional Contexts, Ryan Murphy
Rational Irrationality Across Institutional Contexts, Ryan Murphy
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
Abstract: This paper considers how Bryan Caplan’s concept of rational irrationality may manifest in various political institutional arrangements, building off the demand curve for irrationality. Mob democracy, anarchy, autocracy, and constitutionally constrained democracy are the governance structures addressed. While anarchy is strictly better than mob democracy, under certain conditions, democracy, anarchy, or constitutionally constrained democracy may yield the best outcomes depending on the circumstances.

We used data from the Child Development Supplement (CDS) of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics in 2002 and 2007 to examine the relationship between the specific sport time spent during weekdays or weekends and American children’s body mass index (BMI). Time spent on out-of-school sports was recorded on a randomly selected weekday and a weekend day. Sports were further categorized as formal (organized sports such as sports games or lessons) or casual (any unorganized sports such as sports time in the neighborhood). Child’s height and weight were measured in person by interviewers. Body mass index was used to measure …

Leaders' Risk Propensity And Delegation Of Critical Decision-Making Authority, Reginald Carlton Doctor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A leader's unwillingness to delegate critical decision-making authority to subordinate managers and employees negatively impacts the performance of a firm. There is a lack of research that measures a leader's willingness to delegate critical decision-making authority to subordinate managers and employees based on their individual risk propensities. The purpose of this study was to provide empirical evidence of the influence risk propensity has on a leader's willingness to delegate critical decision-making authority. Specifically, this study examined the extent that risk propensity of leaders affect delegating critical decision making authority to subordinate managers and employees. The research design was a quantitative …
