Chapter from Desilva, A. and M. Aparicio (Eds.), International Handbook of Professional Identities. Rosemead, CA: Scientific & Academic Publishing.

Our chapter examines identity work within and beyond the professions. To lend structure to this emerging perspective, we being by forwarding a general theoretical model of identity work. We then reexamine and extend this model by examining identity work amongst professionals. To do so, we first depend connections with literature on the professions to highlight salient and unique dynamics facing this occupational group. We then assess these dynamics in light of our model. Specifically, we show how an examination of …

Wine Company Analysis In “The New World” And “The Old World”, Jiaji Liang Jan 2015

Wine Company Analysis In “The New World” And “The Old World”, Jiaji Liang

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

There is a growing global market for wine. In our research, we mainly examine wine companies from four countries: France, Italy, the U.S. and China. Data used in this analysis comes from the 2010 to 2013 Plimsoll Top 500 report, focusing on wine companies’ financial performance. The primary goal is to identify which factors may have significant influence on the firms’ profitability. Two-way fixed effects panel data analysis indicates that the firm’s shareholders’ funds in total asset have significant and positive effect on companies’ yearly profit. The results suggest that four years could be a reasonable period for most wine …

Personal Interpersonal Competence Assessment: A Self-Report Instrument For Student Development, Craig R. Seal, Krystal Miguel, Abdulaziz Alzamil, Stefanie E. Naumann, Joanna Royce-Davis, Donald Drost

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

The purpose of this paper is to assess the internal consistency of a revised instrument, the Personal-Interpersonal Competence Assessment (PICA); derived from the earlier Social Emotional Development Instrument (SED-I). There were three primary rationales for the revision. First, and most importantly, to better align the operational factors with the conceptual definitions. Second, was to clearly position the construct within the broader context of personal and interpersonal competence, rather than the emotional intelligence literature. Third, to provide a developmental, rather than a diagnostic assessment for personal-interpersonal competence. As with the earlier SED-I model and measure, the intent of the research is …

The Ceo Branding Mix, Marc Fetscherin

What do Donald Trump, Mark Zuckerberg, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos have in common? They are not only CEOs and living icons of the brands they created but also brands themselves. There are many reasons why CEOs today get more attention than in the past. When the media are looking for a business story they often turn to CEOs or founders. Some companies are larger than countries in terms of number of citizens or employees or in revenue. For example, Walmart has about 2.2 million employees, comparable to the population of Qatar, Namibia, or Slovenia, and its revenues …

The Clash Of Missions: Juxtaposing Competing Pressures In South Africa's Social Enterprises, Emmanuel T. Kodzi Jan 2015

The Clash Of Missions: Juxtaposing Competing Pressures In South Africa's Social Enterprises, Emmanuel T. Kodzi

Faculty Publications

Social enterprises seek critical resources to fulfill their mission in a defined domain of action. However, this quest also constitutes a distraction that complicates the operations of any social enterprise. By analyzing the logic of control versus the logic of empowerment for operating scenarios in South Africa, we examine the process trade-offs that enhance or limit social impact. Our findings prioritize efficiency in resolving process trade-offs, since the focus on value creation diminishes the replenishment cycle for value capture. We propose that value chain processes be controlled to the extent that the enterprise acts as a custodian of community empowerment …

The Small Business Administration (SBA) supports franchising by backing up loans issued by regular lending organizations. However, the SBA does not directly consider firm strategies as part of its lending process. To appreciate how franchisor characteristics influence franchisee failure, we developed a heuristic model using the methodology and power of predictive analytics. We use multi-year data from the World Franchising Council’s surveys on franchisors’ characteristics and from the SBA on franchisee loan defaults. The data cover 271 diverse US franchise chains that are present in both databases. Our model predicts potential defaults of SBA-backed loans issued to American franchisees and …

The Foie Gras Journey, Katie Lindsay

HSU STUDENT THESES AND CAPSTONE PROJECTS

The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings (Fukuoka 2009). In recent decades many countries have bettered themselves by altering farming practices to include animal welfare standards. By finding a common ground, animal agriculture and animal advocates can work together to improve animal welfare. This case study will review California Senate Bill 1520 Force-Fed Birds to examine how the stakeholders in an active legislative battle are working through the controversy to find a place where all parties can thrive. This legislation was brought to the California legislature by Senator …

A Balanced Perspective On Animal Welfare For Improved Meat And Meat Products, A. Y. Chulayo, V. Muchenje Jan 2015

A Balanced Perspective On Animal Welfare For Improved Meat And Meat Products, A. Y. Chulayo, V. Muchenje

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

Increased public concern for animal welfare in the logistics chain has led to a rise in the scrutiny of the treatment of food animals. Factors affecting the status of welfare of slaughter animals begin at the farm and occur during transportation and at the abattoir. The activities that animals pass through before slaughter are thought to have negative effects on both the animal and the product. Before or during this period, animals suffer pain, which compromises their physical, health and biochemical status, and meat quality and quantity; which leads to economic losses. Environmental impact plays a role in the behaviour, …

Protecting Consumers From Themselves: Consumer Law And The Vulnerable Consumer, Neil M. Browne, Kerin B. Clapp, Nancy K. Kubasek, Lauren Biksacky Jan 2015

Protecting Consumers From Themselves: Consumer Law And The Vulnerable Consumer, Neil M. Browne, Kerin B. Clapp, Nancy K. Kubasek, Lauren Biksacky

Economics Faculty Publications

Attitudes toward consumer protection are shaped primarily by complex assumptions about human nature and its interaction with modern marketing. The dominant perspective governing American consumer law is individualism, a descriptive and frequently normative assumption that places watchdog responsibilities on the individual consumer. This perspective is described and analyzed through an examination of public policy arguments about (1) advertising that targets children, (2) restrictions on consumption of sugared beverages, and (3) creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Board. Individualism is then contrasted with the portrayal of consumers as vulnerable. Specifically, insights from behavioral economics and neuropsychology are used to gain a …

An overarching objective of this publication is to assess the extent to which FDI can still be seen as a key driver of economic development, modernisation and convergence for Europe’s low- and middle-income economies, taking into account also the risks and limiting factors associated …

Work System Theory As A Platform: Response To A Research Perspective Article By Niederman And March, Steven Alter Jan 2015

Work System Theory As A Platform: Response To A Research Perspective Article By Niederman And March, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This article responds to “Taking the Work System Theory Forward” (Niederman and March, 2014), a JAIS research perspective article about an article on work system theory (Alter, 2013e). The research perspective article recognizes value in the work system approach, suggests that WST is not a proper theory, and suggests areas for related theory development.

After summarizing the main ideas in WST, this article explains disagreements between Niederman and March (2014) and Alter (2013e), hereafter called N&M and the WST article, regarding what WST is and what WST should become. It notes that N&M interprets basic ideas in WST differently than …

Striving For Research Impact: The Peculiar Case Of The Ais Bright Ict Initiative, Jonathan P. Allen Jan 2015

Striving For Research Impact: The Peculiar Case Of The Ais Bright Ict Initiative, Jonathan P. Allen

Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Strategy

The debate over the real-world impact of research continues in many applied disciplines, including ICT research. We propose that concepts from social informatics can be used to analyze and critique the visions put forward by ICT- based professional societies that are striving for more impactful and pro-social research. Using the recent case of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) ‘Bright ICT Initiative’, we seek to understand how a general desire for more social benefit and research impact translates into a specific problem definition (cybersecurity), and further translates into specific solutions (new internet protocols, a new global governance center). The analysis …

Global Financial Model For The Value Chain, Robert Rainish, Pawel Mensz, James Mohs Jan 2015

Global Financial Model For The Value Chain, Robert Rainish, Pawel Mensz, James Mohs

Finance Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to describe how a valuation decision model for a firm in a multi-country environment can be used to determine the optimal value chain. The paper extends the initial work of Rainish and Mensz (2012). The paper examines how a global firm can optimize its value chain and how that chain will be affected when the value of various key variables change. Variables were selected (e.g. labor costs, transportation costs and transfer price tax rates) from recent studies by consulting firms Deloitte (2013) and the Boston Consulting Group (2014). The data used in the model …

What Do Institutional Investors Know And Act On Before Almost Everyone Else: Evidence From Corporate Bankruptcies, Elena Precourt, Henry Oppenheimer Jan 2015

What Do Institutional Investors Know And Act On Before Almost Everyone Else: Evidence From Corporate Bankruptcies, Elena Precourt, Henry Oppenheimer

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

We analyze investment behavior of institutional managers who hold and trade shares of firms that file for bankruptcy. We find that during the five-year period preceding a bankruptcy filing, institutional investors (except those managing investment companies) are net buyers with a positive abnormal net number of shares traded during the period. Institutional managers start to sell shares of bankrupt firms sooner in some firms than in others; these earlier sales are of smaller firms with weaker operating performance, and lower equity risk. We do not find evidence that institutional stockholders trade strategically and avoid material price declines before they occur.

The Medical Tourism Index: Scale Development And Validation, Marc Fetscherin, Renee-Marie Stephano Jan 2015

The Medical Tourism Index: Scale Development And Validation, Marc Fetscherin, Renee-Marie Stephano

Faculty Publications

Medical tourism is an estimated $100 billion dollar industry. Despite the increasing number of people, companies and countries involved in medical tourism, we know very little about the key drivers and how countries are perceived as medical tourism destinations. The purpose of this paper is to present the Medical Tourism Index, a new type of country-based performance measure to assess the attractiveness of a country as a medical tourist destination. We followed a rigorous multi-steps scale development procedure by using four empirical studies based on 4995 respondents. The MTI is a multidimensional construct with 4 dimensions (country, tourism, medical costs, …

Are There Whiter Shades Of Pale In Marketing The Ivory Tower? An Examination Of Differentiation In Institutional Public Service Announcements Through Content Analysis, Elizabeth Anne Wolfe

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study explored the public service announcements (PSAs) produced by institutions of higher education that competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 2013-14 postseason football bowl games. Utilizing content analysis and survey results, the researcher examined the level of content distinction between and within institutional groups based on athletic conference, Carnegie classification, total student enrollment, and primary target audience. The researcher also investigated the role the PSAs played in marketing campaigns conducted by the institutions and the additional marketing strategies used in those campaigns. The analysis showed limited distinction between institutional groups and little to no distinction within groups. Further, …
