The Road To 60 Years And Beyond: How The Emotions Of A Leader Drive Sustainable Brand Growth, Roy Gifford Jan 2015

The Road To 60 Years And Beyond: How The Emotions Of A Leader Drive Sustainable Brand Growth, Roy Gifford

Student Scholarship

Ad spending is expected to reach $545 billion by the end of 2014. Despite the tremendous resources allocated to marketing, brand deaths still occur (e.g., Oldsmobile, Trans World Airlines, Plymouth, and Woolworth Stores). Yet, some brands 60 years and older (e.g., John Deere) have remained relevant across generations of consumers. We call these heritage brands. We define a heritage brand as a brand that (1) is at least 60 years old, (2) is authentic, (3) is trusted, (4) has strong brand recognition, and (5) has the ability to generate brand stories. To date, no literature addresses the behaviors of leaders …

Do Competing Suppliers Maximize Profits As Theory Suggests? An Empirical Evaluation, Ehsan Elahi, Roger Blake Jan 2015

Do Competing Suppliers Maximize Profits As Theory Suggests? An Empirical Evaluation, Ehsan Elahi, Roger Blake

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

This research compares results from laboratory experiments with predictions from theory for decisions made by competing suppliers. We consider a supply chain in which a single buyer outsources the manufacture of a commodity product to suppliers not on the basis of price, but rather on service. Three different criteria on which suppliers compete are evaluated: 1) a guaranteed specific inventory fill-rate, 2) guaranteed level of base-stock, and 3) a parameter optimizing the supply chain in the buyer’s favor. Our results show that in most cases, suppliers’ decisions are significantly different than the Nash equilibrium, meaning that they do not maximize …

Parody Social Media Accounts: Influence And Impact On Organizations During Crisis, Sarah Wan, Regina Koh, Andrew Ong, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

With the uptake of the use of social media, the communication field has seen a rise in a new phenomenon: parody social media accounts. Through study of five such accounts, this paper shows how parody social media accounts can arise from a crisis or paracrisis, which is “a publicly visible crisis threat” that is triggered online (Coombs & Holladay, 2012, p. 409). The study also examines the behavior of these accounts and how they enforce negative perceptions and impede an organization's efforts and initiatives. Using the social-mediated crisis communication model as its theoretical lens, this study seeks to examine parody …

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

A choice-based conjoint study was conducted sampling 400 individuals to determine their preference for Soft Touch and raised tactile coatings, which are sometimes called Hi Rise or profile coatings. Soft Touch coatings have a velvety, warm feel to them, and Hi Rise coatings simulate embossing with a glossy appearance to them. Both are considered tactile coatings, engaging the sense of touch.

Demographic profile data, level of agreement about statements related to cosmetic packaging and packaging choice set selections were collected. The conjoint sets contained three attributes: design color, tactile coatings, and price.

Design choice was split. Approximately half of the …

A Networking-Based View Of Business Model Innovation: Theory And Method, Rong Fu, Li Qiu, Liang Quyang

Communications of the IIMA

After reviewing the literature, the concept of Business Model or E-Business Models are discussed in Ms paper. Firms keep interacting with each other and build all kinds of relationships among them. Based on the theory of business networks, we put forward a networking-based view of business model analysis frame. When we make decisions to choose one or other business models, first, the source of value should be found. Second, business network models, which show the procedure of value creation and distribution, should be analyzed. Third, we choose the feasible network among networks we analyzed. Finally, the firms' strategy to ensure …

Modular Curriculum Design Using Personal Learning Plans And Reusable Learning Components, Jay M. Lightfoot Jan 2015

Modular Curriculum Design Using Personal Learning Plans And Reusable Learning Components, Jay M. Lightfoot

Communications of the IIMA

University-based education is facing direct competition from for-profit corporations over the lucrative lifetime-learning market. This is occurring primarily because universities have not adapted to advances in technology and changes in the educational needs of students. To correct this problem, a new curriculum solution is proposed. This solution is loosely based upon the model curricula generated by professional organizations. The solution utilizes personal learning plans tied to a global learning schema. The end result is a very flexible curriculum delivery model that effectively utilizes modern technology and is potentially superior to any offered by commercial education providers.

Naturalness Of Ontology Concepts For Rating Aspects Of The Semantic Web, Yoo Jung An, Kuo-Chuan Huang, James Geller Jan 2015

Naturalness Of Ontology Concepts For Rating Aspects Of The Semantic Web, Yoo Jung An, Kuo-Chuan Huang, James Geller

Communications of the IIMA

The Semantic Web is expected to be the next generation of the WWW. Ontologies and agents are major ingredients of the Semantic Web. In (Lee and Geller 2005), we have argued that some existing ontologies make use of unnatural concepts. We stated that unnatural concepts make it difficult to use an ontology and they contradict the purpose of an ontology, which includes explanatory power for the purpose of sharing information. In this paper we elaborate what makes a concept unnatural. We also analyze existing ontologies to get numeric measures of how natural their concepts are.

It Transformation Decision Processes: A Conceptual Framework For Efficiency/Effectiveness Optimization, Jurgen Reiner, Volker Stix Jan 2015

It Transformation Decision Processes: A Conceptual Framework For Efficiency/Effectiveness Optimization, Jurgen Reiner, Volker Stix

Communications of the IIMA

Decision processes are complex managerial challenges for long-term information technology (IT) initiatives with an organization-wide scope (in short: IT transformations). Costs, benefits, and risks of such IT investments are hard to capture, and the dozens ofprescriptive methods proposed for IT project evaluation have proved to contribute little to solve the dilemma in practice. Thus, as opposed to continue the search for another prescriptive evaluation methodology, this paper follows a new approach: it targets the development of a conceptual framework that allows for the improved management of holistic IT decision processes - as opposed to cook-book approaches that attempt optimizing the …

A. Survey Of Entity Resolution And Record Linkage Methodologies, David Guy Brizan, Abdullah Uz Tansel Jan 2015

A. Survey Of Entity Resolution And Record Linkage Methodologies, David Guy Brizan, Abdullah Uz Tansel

Communications of the IIMA

A great deal of research is focused on formation of a data warehouse. This is an important area of research as it could save many computation cycles and thus allow accurate information provided to the right people at the right time. Two considerations when forming a data warehouse are data cleansing (including entity resolution) and with schema integration (including record linkage). Uncleansed and fragmented data requires time to decipher and may lead to increased costs for an organization, so data cleansing and schema integration can save a great many (human) computation cycles and can lead to higher organizational efficiency. In …
