Managing Technical Debt: Insights From Recent Empirical Evidence, Narayan Ramasubbu, Chris F. Kemerer, C. Jason Woodard

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Technical debt refers to maintenance obligations that software teams accumulate as a result of their actions. Empirical research has led researchers to suggest three dimensions along which software development teams should map their technical-debt metrics: customer satisfaction needs, reliability needs, and the probability of technology disruption.

How Organizational Identity Influences Information Technology (It) Success, Stephan P. Miller

Student Scholarship

Corporate Information Technology (IT) functions are under increasing pressure to succeed in their IT outsourcing (ITO) arrangements. Studies of ITO success have in the past mainly explored its operational and financial aspects. At the same time there is a dearth of research on broader organizational antecedents and outcomes of ITO. This study examines the effect of organizational identity on outsourcing success. Specifically, we ask: does the strength of an organization’s identity- i.e. how unique it views its role in relation to other corporate functions- influence ITO success? We conduct an empirical study among 312 IT leaders engaged in outsourcing. We …

Jon M. Huntsman School of Business News Collection

As a student it can be difficult to know what classes to take or what careers to pursue. I’m happy to say that I have made it through that process and am starting my sales career on Monday with Nalco in Midland, Texas. Although the journey was not easy, it was worth it, and I owe a lot of that to the courses I took at the Huntsman School of Business.

#Handsonlearning: Lessons From Student "Takeover" Of Csb/Sju Social Media, Tiffany Clements, Kelly Berg

Forum Lectures

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, CSB and SJU communication students "took over" CSB/SJU institutional profiles on Instagram and Vine for six weeks in the spring of 2014. Students in the Communication Department's New Media Applications and Analysis course planned, prepared and shared photos and video for their assigned profile. Groups were responsible for setting goals for their takeover, creating a profile of a target audience and applying lessons learned about effective branding through visual communication.

In this presentation, Associate Professor Kelly Berg and CSB/SJU Social Media Specialist Tiffany Clements discuss learning outcomes from the collaboration and takeaways for future Communications and …

Defence Versus Offence: Disclosure And Media In Takeovers, Eda Orhun Feb 2015

Defence Versus Offence: Disclosure And Media In Takeovers, Eda Orhun

All Works

This paper analyzes a target firm's decision to voluntarily disclose information during a takeover event and the effect of such disclosures on the outcome of the takeover. In the model the acquirer may also run a media campaign. The model predicts that a voluntary disclosure of positive information by the target decreases the likelihood that the takeover succeeds. The empirical analysis confirms this prediction by showing that positive earnings forecasts by target firms during takeover events increase the probability of takeover failure. Overall, it is shown that information dissemination through voluntary disclosures by target firms is an important factor affecting …

Carsey Publications

This report summarizes research undertaken by the Carsey School of Public Policy to evaluate impacts of the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund on CDFIs and of the CDFI industry on the people and communities it serves. In summary, we find a variety of evidence indicating that CDFIs are advancing the statutory purposes of the CDFI Fund to promote economic revitalization and community development through the provision of credit, capital and financial services to underserved populations and communities in the United States

Women, Confidence, And Leadership: What Do Utah Women Leaders Think?, Susan R. Madsen, Lyndee Anderson, Matthew Kelly, Jessica Rodriguez

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In 2014, the Utah Women & Leadership Project team collected data from various sources to understand some of the issues in Utah regarding women, confidence, and leadership. Why does this matter? Utah consistently ranks at or near the bottom of national studies on the status of women. For example, in 2013, the Center for American Progress released a report titled“ The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation.” This report ranked Utah last of all 50 states in terms of women holding positions of decision making and leadership.

Volatility Adds Risk For Market Orders, Steven D. Dolvin Feb 2015

Volatility Adds Risk For Market Orders, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

With a market order, trades transact at the current market price. With increased high frequency trading, more and more stocks are seeing dramatic swings in prices within a short time period. Such swings add risk for market orders, as investors may get a price vastly different from what they had expected. In such cases, limit orders may be useful to minimize price risk. See article here, WSJ.

2 Days, $1 Million, Steven D. Dolvin

Options allow investors to generate higher levels of returns (and losses) as compared to taking positions directly in the stocks that the options are derived from. For example, a recent MSN article discusses a trader that purchased $1.7 million worth of call options on AMAT. The stock price increased 5% in two days, resulting in a profit of $1.4 million, which is an 82% return.
