For the first time in 37 years, a horse (American Pharoah) has won the Triple Crown. The previous ten times this has happened, the stock market has lost an average of 9% over the remainder of the year. This adds to the expanding debate of Behavioral Finance vs. Market Efficiency.

Sustainability Reporting Practices Of Group Iii U.S. Air Carriers, Lukas Rudari, Mary E. Johnson

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Once a side note, sustainability reporting has become an important issue for companies and airlines globally and in the U.S. This exploratory study examined the sustainability reporting practices of U.S. passenger and cargo air carriers with total revenues exceeding $1 billion classified as Group III air carriers by the U.S Department of Transportation. The results showed that 53% of Group III air carriers published sustainability reports. Out of these 53%, all except one referenced the Global Reporting framework in their sustainability reports. Forty percent or 6 out of 15 carriers participated in at least one Carbon Disclosure Project questionnaire. Based …

This paper examines the challenges associated with communications in virtual teams. Specifically, the study reviews challenges of selection and utilization of commuications media for use in a virtual setting. From their early inception in the 1990s, virtual teams have undergone and continue to experience significant changes. The major factors in those changes are techonolgy development in communication and the globalization of business. The advances on communication technology combined with reduced costs of those technologies have allowed more organizations to utlize virtual teams. Lacking face-to-face contact, virtual team leaders must rely on computer-mediated communication to train, develop, and motivate team members. …

The differences between the on-premise and off-premise craft beer experience was researched in this study. The original research question was whether there is a relationship between on-premise and off-premise sales of craft beer. After initial research through semi- structured interviews the research questions were revised to three related questions: 1. What are the on-premise and off-premise craft beer experiences?, 2. Is there a significant difference?, and 3. Does the one behavior affect the other in purchasing behavior? Participants included 12 consumers of craft beer ranging from individuals with extensive craft beer experience to relative newcomers to the craft beer segment. …

Bad Corporate Marriages: Waking Up In Bed The Morning After, Ye Cai, Hersh Shefrin

This paper examines corporate risk taking behavior in the wake of unsuccessful merger activities. We find that relative to other firms, firms that made bad acquisitions take both more systematic risk and more idiosyncratic risk. Moreover, higher risk is associated with greater value destruction and stronger corporate governance. The increased risk can be traced to increased cash flow volatility, increased leverage, decreased asset liquidity, more investment in R&D, and more equity-based executive compensation. These findings are in line with the behavioral approach suggesting that in the domain of losses, decision makers generally become more tolerant of risk.

It is presumed that exceeding the Planetary Boundaries will result in an environmental tipping point, shifting the earth into a new environmental equilibrium detrimental to life as we know it. Are They Different? Ceos Made In Ceo Factories, Ye Cai, Merih Sevilir, Jun Yang

We examine the employment histories of CEOs at large US companies and find that a disproportionately large number of CEOs are originated from a small number of high-profile firms that are praised for their superior abilities in training and developing corporate leaders, referred to as CEO factories. Specifically, 20.5% of all CEOs appointed at the S&P 1500 firms from 1992 to 2010 came from 36 CEO factories. CEOs originated from those CEO factories are referred to as factory CEOs. Do Entrepreneurs Make Good Vcs?, Ye Cai, Merih Sevilir, Xuan Tian

Finance

Using hand-collected data on the backgrounds of venture capitalists (VCs), we show that in a typical venture capital firm in our sample, 13.9% of VCs have been entrepreneurs before becoming a VC, referred to as entrepreneur VCs. Both OLS and 2SLS analyses suggest that venture capital firms employing a greater fraction of entrepreneur VCs have better performance. In addition, the positive effect of entrepreneur VCs on venture capital firm performance is stronger for smaller and younger venture capital firms, and venture capital firms specializing in high-tech industries and in early-stage investments. This presentation introduces a newly developed social work group intervention model in workforce development. Transforming Impossible into Possible (TIP) program empowers participants to develop self-awareness, confidence, hope, goal-orientation, leadership, accountability, conscientiousness, and grit, it is anticipated that it improves both employment and retention outcomes.

The United Nations supported Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), has identified Corporate Peace as an important component of fostering peaceful societies. This includes the need for companies to incorporate peace and reduction of violence into their core business strategy. Realisation of business strategy requires alignment with all organisational business functions, including human resource management. I propose that one avenue toward Corporate Peace, particularly in contexts of protracted and violent political conflict, is through conflict-sensitive human resource management practices in the areas of employee support, participation, and integration. It was a just a year ago that I wrote about the last attempt at a Triple Crown. This year we are at that point again where a race of approximately two minutes and twenty seconds will either end a remarkable era of Triple Crown futility or extend it for yet another year. And so with a few changes of the cast I submit again these observations on this marvelous weekend in horse racing history.

In this research, the author proposes to study the feasibility of applying ISO shipping containers as alternative construction materials. Using retired shipping containers for dwellings, offices or other construction purposes is an environmentally friendly idea. The "green generation" constitutes a battle against harmful effects of industrial developments. Motivated by the green movement, this research addressed the recycling of shipping containers in the construction market. Particularly, this research studied the recycling of shipping containers for the purpose of student housing construction.
