Why Do We Need More Women Leaders In Higher Education?, Susan R. Madsen Jul 2015

Why Do We Need More Women Leaders In Higher Education?, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Research has shown that most managers and top leadership teams do not fully realize the value of having women in key positions, and this is the case across all sectors, including business, government, political, nonprofit, religious, community, and education (schools, colleges, and universities). Organizations will increasingly thrive when both men and women hold management and leadership roles. Gender inclusivity benefits not only businesses, but also entities such as churches, state legislatures, and city councils. This potential for greater thriving is also true for institutions of higher education in the U.S. and around the world. Understanding the value of inclusivity in …

Strategic Similarity And Acquisition Outcomes At The Target: Evidence From China’S Beer Industry, Yuping Zeng, Timothy Schoenecker

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This study investigates the effect of horizontal acquisitions on target firms in China’s context. We examine how competitive and organizational similarity jointly affect cost savings, revenue growth and profitability improvement at the target in horizontal acquisitions. Using a dataset containing information on acquired firms in China’s beer industry, we find that the way in which competitive similarity impacts on cost savings at the target depends on organizational similarity and the type of cost that is examined. Additionally, competitive dissimilarity is found to result in higher revenue growth and profitability improvement at the target.

The Use Of Consumer-Generated Feedback In The Hotel Industry: Current Practices And Their Effects On Quality, Edwin Torres, Howard Adler, Carl Behnke, Li Miao, Xinran Lehto

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Consumer-generated feedback is hard to ignore these days. Word-of-mouth has expanded beyond a customer’s immediate friends and family; with the help of technology it reaches thousands of current and prospective guests. In light of this, scholars and practitioners are exploring the subject of consumer-generated feedback. Today, most of the research regarding this subject focuses on the use of consumer-generated feedback to make purchase decisions. In contrast, the present study explores the use of such information for the purposes of improving hotel operations. This article examines the amount of value placed on consumer-generated feedback, the relative importance placed on positive and …

The Relationships Between Entrepreneurs' Gender, Attitudes Toward Seeking Assistance From Entrepreneurship Centers, Utilization Of Centers, And Entrepreneurial Success, Scott C. Manley Jul 2015

The Relationships Between Entrepreneurs' Gender, Attitudes Toward Seeking Assistance From Entrepreneurship Centers, Utilization Of Centers, And Entrepreneurial Success, Scott C. Manley

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Despite the proliferation of entrepreneurship centers, little is known about the reasons entrepreneurs appear reluctant to utilize their services. Although women are more likely than men to seek help in most settings, some research appears to suggest that this tendency may not apply to entrepreneurs. This is interesting given the financial underperformance of female-owned firms and research showing that entrepreneurship centers are effective and thereby lead to economic development. To better understand these issues, I propose and test a new conceptual framework of entrepreneurial help seeking that considers how entrepreneurs vary in their attitudes towards seeking professional help. In addition, …

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The paper did a comparative analysis of the carbon emission and European Union Emission Trading Surcharges (EU ETS) of South African Airways (SAA) current fleet that used aviation jet A1 fuel and the same fleet if it had used a 25% bio-fuel ‘drop in’ for the European routes within the first quarter of the 2014 flying year (FY 14). Operational data in terms of the flight scheduled, aircraft type, total time enroute, route stage length, passenger estimates were obtained through SAA’s flight operations website. Catch My Fall: The Importance Of Developing A Leadership Philosophy Statement In Sustaining Original Values And Leadership Direction, Niall Hegarty

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This article draws attention to the need and importance for chief executives to formulate a Leadership Philosophy Statement (LPS) as an aid to guiding them as they execute their duties of leadership. As companies adhere to mission statements (MS) which are developed to light the pathway to success, so too does the leader need a leadership philosophy to pursue that mission. The interconnectedness of organizational mission statements and individual leadership statements is highlighted to emphasize the importance of having related goals between leader and organization. The structure of the LPS as well as its content is discussed to better inform …

A Comparison Of Worldviews Of Business Leaders From Disparate Geographic Cultures, William R. Auxier Jul 2015

A Comparison Of Worldviews Of Business Leaders From Disparate Geographic Cultures, William R. Auxier

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Leadership functions within the context of multiple perspectives. Business leaders naturally possess a worldview that is influenced by today’s global society and economy. Although interacting with business leaders of disparate worldviews can create challenges, the better these various worldviews are understood, the more positive the outcomes of leadership will be. Global business organizations require leadership that recognizes their own foundations, along with those of the leaders with whom they interact -- especially leaders emanating from other cultures and geographic locations. This paper explores the concept of worldview and its underlying core values and present the results of interviews of four …

Finding Truth In Cause-Related Advertising: A Lexical Analysis Of Brands’ Health, Environment, And Social Justice Communications On Twitter, Aron Culotta, Jennifer Cutler, Junzhe Zheng Jul 2015

Finding Truth In Cause-Related Advertising: A Lexical Analysis Of Brands’ Health, Environment, And Social Justice Communications On Twitter, Aron Culotta, Jennifer Cutler, Junzhe Zheng

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Consumers increasingly desire to make purchasing decisions based on factors such as health, the environment, and social justice. In response, there has been a commensurate rise in cause-related marketing to appeal to socially-conscious consumers. However, a lack of regulation and standardization makes it difficult for consumers to assess marketing claims; this is further complicated by social media, which firms use to cultivate a personality for their brand through frequent conversational messages. Yet, little empirical research has been done to explore the relationship between cause-related marketing messages on social media and the true cause alignment of brands. In this paper, we …

Reflections Of Practicing School Principals On Ethical Leadership And Decision-Making: Confronting Social Injustice, Mary E. Gardiner, Penny L. Tenuto Jul 2015

Reflections Of Practicing School Principals On Ethical Leadership And Decision-Making: Confronting Social Injustice, Mary E. Gardiner, Penny L. Tenuto

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The study objective was to identify leadership dilemmas of practicing school administrators and their own codes of ethics to inform understandings of ethical decision-making. Ethical decision-making underpins leadership practice, theory, and preparation. Existing models for ethical leadership underplay the importance of social justice ethics in decision-making. The research encompassed a qualitative study based upon the constructivist paradigm. Data were collected in the form of interviews, document analyses, and professional observations with practicing school administrators in public schools. Dilemmas reported were analyzed utilizing ethical leadership theories together with social justice constructs. Results indicate ways practicing school administrators, faculty preparing administrators, and …

The Emergence Of Leader-Society Value Congruence: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Ghulam Mustafa Jul 2015

The Emergence Of Leader-Society Value Congruence: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Ghulam Mustafa

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Previous research on cross-cultural leadership has focused on the outcomes associated with leadership factors consistent with national cultural values without exploring how leaders’ individual cultural orientations become congruent with the societal culture in different national settings. The purpose of this paper is to provide a deeper understanding of how leader-society value congruence is produced and how the degree of such congruency varies across cultures. This paper conceptually clarifies the mechanisms that mediate the influence of cultural context on leader-society value congruence; suggests that the effects of societal context are only distal antecedents of producing congruence between leaders’ individual and societal …

Universalism And Utilitarianism: An Evaluation Of Two Popular Moral Theories In Business Decision Making, Joan Marques

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Moral theories remain a topic of interest, not just to moral philosophers, but increasingly in business circles as well, thanks to a tainted reputation that urges more awareness in this regard. Based on the expressed preferences of 163 undergraduate and graduate students of business ethics, this article briefly examines the two most popular theories, Universalism (Kantian) and Utilitarianism (consequentialist), and presents a SWOT analysis of both. Some of the strengths and weaknesses that will be discussed for Universalism are consistency, intension basis, and universalizability, while some of the discussed strengths and weaknesses for Utilitarianism are flexibility, outcome-basis, and lack of …

Women's World Cup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was a remarkable performance. Two goals in five minutes, four goals in sixteen minutes. Five overall in a 5-2 World Cup Victory in front of over 53,000 fans in Vancouver. According to NPR early reports put the peak U.S. television audience at nearly 23 million viewers. It is the highest rating and largest audience for any U.S. World Cup match in U.S. television history. The overnight rating approached the ratings of the recently concluded NBA Finals. The game had such excitement that even FOX’s commentators and announcing team could not put a damper on the event.
