Navigational charts have been officially digitised for merchant shipping since 2010. Using an electronic chart is not as straightforward as using conventional paper charts. However, electronic charts provide a more efficient and sophisticated means of exchanging information for bridge system operators. Mariners should know how personnel aboard many vessels use navigational information. In this study, deck officers were invited to participate in a simulation experiment. A scenario of the entrance of a vessel into a busy fairway was simulated, and the participants were divided into two groups. Organizations are increasingly making their decisions through multifunctional teams that must interpret, prioritize and discuss an issue to respond to it. Research on achievement goals and framing are each instructive for understanding part of this process. The literature on achievement goals, high-level priorities, is important for understanding team discussions and decisions but it has not found any actionable antecedents to those goals. Studies on frames, cognitive structures, demonstrates that most issues are interpreted as threats or opportunities, which impacts individual and organizational actions. However, framing research does not show how those interpretations impact team priorities or behaviors. The purpose of …

This dissertation investigates the role of individuals in firm strategy and performance by exploring how social factors at the individual-level combine with financial incentives to influence individual behaviors and performance. By drawing on unique proprietary datasets from two service settings, I investigate 1) how social affiliations between real estate listing agents and clients influence value creation, appropriation, and the types of transactions agents engage in, and 2) how corporate awards, which primarily reward individuals based off non-pecuniary social factors, are influenced by individual heterogeneity. In environmental conservation circles around the world, the contributions of indigenous peoples and local communities to the sustainable maintenance of ecosystems and natural resources are being given increased attention. Whether for cultural, spiritual, economic, or other purposes, the use of traditional and local knowledge of habitat and resource management is slowly making its way into the modern environmental movement, and is being incorporated into the dominant conservation paradigms. Riding on the trend of globalization, a large number of new ventures have emerged deploying resources in multiple country markets so as to arrive at a competitive advantage. Studies that focus on such international new ventures grew to become a distinct research area: "international Entrepreneurship" that attracts much research attention but leaves a core issue namely "liability of newness" unaddressed. About 50 years ago, Stinchcombe (1965) coined this term to explain that most new ventures fail because their founders cannot switch their roles quickly enough to adapt to the changing environment. Given the tremendous impact of online reviews on consumer choice, responding to online word of mouth (WOM) has become an important channel for firms to engage the consumers. This thesis investigates how firms can proactively respond to online product reviews to engage customers and manage customer relationships. In Study One, based upon the data of hotel reviews on Tripadvisor.com, I propose that responding by firms differ in three aspects, namely frequency, speed, and the amount of information, and these metrics exert significant influence on subsequent consumes’ WOM engagement, hotel rankings, and votes of usefulness of the reviews.

The coexistence of tradable and non-tradable shares in Chinese firms has caused severe agency problems and has been the subject of much criticism. In 2005, the Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission launched a reform to eliminate the dual-class share structure and convert non-tradable shares into tradable shares. My thesis examines how the Split Share Structure Reform in China affects the level of information asymmetry of listed firms. The regression results show that the firm-level information asymmetry, measured by the probability of informed trading (PIN), is positively associated to the firm’s proportion of non-tradable shares before the reform, and the PIN decreases …
