Project Management In A Commercial Environment, Ann Murphy Nov 2015

Project Management In A Commercial Environment, Ann Murphy

The ITB Journal

Projects are proposed as a result of creative ideas and as responses to problems and planning. While relatively small projects can be managed on an informal basis, complex projects require formal project management in order to achieve specific objectives, obtain and allocate resources in an efficient and effective manner, meet allocated budgets, and ensure that critical time schedules are met. This paper examines the principal elements of project management by analysing the key roles which Project Managers play, the roles with which the Project Manager must interact, the methods available for the definition, monitoring, control and closure of the project …

Human Resources Management, A Dynamic Process Of Supporting An Organisation’S Development., Liam Lenihan

Given the diversity of people in the work context and the particular time bound events/issues that define an organisation, human resources management provides customised management responses. Every organisation, be it public, private, a service organisation or a manufacturing organisation is at a unique stage in its own development at any point in time. Such uniqueness merits/evokes customised human resources management approaches. A start-up company is very different from a mature organisation, while the profit-making organisation is very different from the voluntary, not-for-profit organisation. All …

Professional Identity And You: Why Self-Concept Matters In Librarianship, Kevin Tanner

FIMS Presentations

Kevin Tanner addresses the importance of professional identity in librarianship. In the Summer 2015 semester, he completed an independent study on the construction of professional identity of librarians on Twitter through professional development and networking. During this session, he shares the results of that study and give suggestions on how you can begin to find your own professional identity while still retaining your individuality. While there are many stereotypes about librarians, they are not “one-size-fits-all” professionals, and a new modern image of the professional has begun to emerge in the digital age through a thoughtful reflection on identity.

Attitudinal Predictors Of Relative Reliance On Human Vs. Automated Advisors, Stephanie M. Merritt, Ruchi Sinha, Paul G. Curran, Daniel R. Ilgen

Ed G. Smith College of Business Faculty Works

Trust and liking are attitudes with important implications for automation reliance in single-advisor settings; however, the extent to which their relationships with reliance generalise to settings in which the user receives conflicting advice from a human and automation is unknown. Participants completed an X-ray screening task and received simultaneous advice from what they believed was another human and an automated aid. High disuse was found for both advisors. Among participants who relied on advice, those with greater relative liking for the automation than for the human significantly increased their reliance on the automation relative to the human during the first …

Safe Operations Above Fl600, Lt. Col. Stephen Hunter

Space Traffic Management Conference

Safe Operations Above FL600

Abstract

With the increase in likelihood of near-term development of revenue-generating point-to-point suborbital flights and the increase in high-altitude-long-endurance commercial operations above FL600, the criticality of addressing operations above class A airspace has never been more pressing. While the Federal Aviation Administration describes the National Airspace System, it doesn’t offer a description that includes a top. Technological, physiological, physical and administrative limitations have relegated most air operations to FL600 and below. As that changes, previous work on Space Traffic Management (STM) concepts begin to take on new life and add to sincere considerations for adaptation or …

Knowledge And Value Development In Management Consulting, Fionnuala Darby, Geraldine Lavin Nov 2015

Knowledge And Value Development In Management Consulting, Fionnuala Darby, Geraldine Lavin

The ITB Journal

The relationship between management consultants and their clients plays a key part in the success of consulting firms. To develop an understanding of the dynamics of the clientconsultant relationship, the authors reviewed literature in the areas of intangible professional services, impression management, perception and the interaction process. A model is proposed and the authors use a case study to emphasise areas highlighted by the literature. The authors contend that impression management, aided by positive perception and the development of the client-consultant relationship, is an important motivational force in securing consulting projects. It upholds the model for understanding the client-consultant relationship.

Market Orientation: The Implementation Of The Marketing Concept, Maura O Connell Nov 2015

Market Orientation: The Implementation Of The Marketing Concept, Maura O Connell

The ITB Journal

The marketing literature has provided little guidance in relation to creating market driven organisations. It has traditionally provided pieces of the puzzle i.e. the product life cycle, segmentation etc, but it has fallen short of demonstrating how to put the pieces together to complete the picture i.e. creating a market oriented organisation. As a result marketing has largely been confined to ‘overseeing and co-ordinating activities directly involved with the outside - such as sales, promotion and delivery’ (Witcher B J, 1990). This has led to a situation where many organisations have reservations about the success achieved with the implementation of …

Public Attitudes To Housing Systems For Pregnant Pigs, E. B. Ryan, David Fraser, Daniel M. Weary

Understanding concerns about the welfare of farm animals is important for the development of socially sustainable production practices. Initial responses and changes in responses after accessing the information were analyzed from Likert scores of 242 participants and from their written comments. Participants were less willing to accept the use of gestation stalls after viewing information …

Leaders Define Themselves, Usu Jon M. Huntsman School Of Business

Jon M. Huntsman School of Business News Collection

One of the world’s most influential business leaders is a respected chief executive because, as she says, she “does not aspire to a title, but aspires to be a leader.” Cathy Engelbert leads more than 220,000 professionals as Chief Executive Officer for Deloitte LLP, and inspired hundreds of attendees at the recent Partners in Business Accounting conference at Utah State University. Engelbert’s leadership path started as captain of her collegiate basketball team. Attending Lehigh University on a lacrosse scholarship, she walked onto the women’s basketball team and later found herself leading her team on the court. As she maneuvered through …
